Multi-user shared disks do not lend themselves to the creation of "undeletion" utilities, as the file system is regularly quite active regardless of a particular user, and deleted disk sectors and headers can easily be overwritten. In other words, undeletion utilities are available, but these tools may not be able to recover the file(s) -- alternative techniques include replacing the "delete" command with a COPY to a "wastebasket" area (which is periodically cleaned out) followed by a DELETE, as are techniques involving regular disk BACKUPs. One useful tool is DFU, available on the OpenVMS Freeware CD-ROM. DFU includes an "undelete" command. |
