Questions:

On the web page "http:/ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/dec-faq/vms", there is an article which comes closest to the question I'm trying to find an answer to:

------------------------------------------------------------
VMS4. Which is better - OpenVMS or UNIX?

This question comes up periodically, usually asked by new subscribers who are
long-time UNIX users. Sometimes, it is ignored totally; other times, it leads
to a long series of repetitive messages that convince no one and usually carry
little if any new information. Please do everyone a favor and avoid
re-starting this perpetual, fruitless debate.
                                        [[email protected]]

Seriously, OpenVMS and the better implementations of UNIX are all fine
operating systems, each with its strengths and weaknesses. If you're
in a position where you need to choose, select the one that best fits
your own requirements, considering, for example, whether or not the
layered products or specific OS features you want are available.

See also questions VMS2 and SOFT2 for information on POSIX for OpenVMS which
provides significant UNIX functionality on OpenVMS.
                                        [[email protected]]
------------------------------------------------------------

This is a surprisingly dodgey set of responses to post on a forum which is billed as being technical. Essentially, this article advises "Don't worry, just shut up."

My questions are:

What are the relative merits of OpenVMS and DEC Unix?
What are OpenVMS's advantages over DEC Unix?
What are DEC Unix's advantages over OpenVMS?

What are the issues involved in migrating from OpenVMS to DEC Unix?

To rephrase the questions: What are the strengths and weaknesses of each, relative to the other? And where can I find this information?

Thank you!

"Please do everyone a favor and avoid re-starting this
   perpetual, fruitless debate."

The choice of operating systems can be based on political
requirements, on personal familiarity, on trade press fads,
on pre-existing local or similar installations, or on
   application availability.
