Dear Wizard:

I an working in a networking company, i would like to know
what is the different between a VAX 3100/38 and VAX 3100/40.

This is because my company intends to buy over an old VAX 3100/38
machine for our test lab. Right now, my company is using
a VAX 3100/40.

The purpose for these two machine are to run NCP 6.1, using
a Hughes Network Systems. I do ask from the Hughes Network
Systems, but they only insist that a VAX 3100/40 should be
use instead of the VAX 3100/38.

I would very appriciate is you can help me.

1708.1There is no "VAX 3100" model...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Apr 09 1997 10:4128
I will assume you meant the VAXstation 3100 model 38, and
   the VAXstation 3100 model 40.

The VAXstation 3100 model 30 and 40 were rated at 2.8 VUPS,
and were the first members of the VAXstation 3100 series.

The VAXstation 3100 model 38 and 48 were the second members
of the VAXstation 3100 series, and were rated at 3.8 VUPS.

The VAXstation 3100 model 38 and 48 enclosure packaging is the
same as the model 30 and 40, respectively, differing only by
the faster CPU module. The 4x series models add additional
internal storage expansion capabilities over the 3x series.

There is also a MicroVAX 3100 model 40, but no model 38 in that
series. The MicroVAX 3100 model 40 is different from the
VAXstation 3100 series in terms of electronics, licensing,
and packaging, and is rated at about 5.0 VUPS.

The VAXstation 3100 model 76 is the fastest member of the
VAXstation 3100 series, at 7.6 VUPs.

Members of the MicroVAX 3100 series are available at speeds in
   excess of 24 VUPS.

As for why Hughes Network Systems specifically recommends the
model 40, the Wizard will not hazard a guess.
