Is OpenVMS(v6.1+) able to handle the maximum memory the hardware can support (ex. VAX 6xxx->1Gb; VAX 77xx->3.5Gb; Alpha 84xx->28Gb) or is the limit some point in between. Our current environment has the VAX systems at v6.1 and the Alpha systems at v6.2. Both platforms will potentially go to v7.x.

:I have been trying to find documentation on the maximum :memory supported by OpenVMS for VAX and Alpha systems. See the Software Product Description (SPD) for OpenVMS, for the particular OpenVMS version(s) of interest. In general, yes, V6.* and later support the maximum memory for the system. OpenVMS VAX V6.1 supports 1.25 GB on VAX 6000-600 series, and 3.5 GB on the VAX 7000 and VAX 10000 series systems. OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 is the minimum for the AlphaServer 8000 series, and releases as late as V6.2-1H3 or V7.1 may be required, depending on the specifics of the peripherals configured and other aspects of the local configuration. As of OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, the maximum memory supported on the AlphaServer 8000 series is 14 GB. As of V6.2-1H3, it will support the maximum memory configured in the AlphaServer series. OpenVMS Alpha V7.0 and later supports 64-bit virtual addressing. |
