Hi,
We are just installing VMS 7.1 in a Alpha 1000/HSZ50 environment, with
RAID 5 and mirroring.

My question are do we need ( does it work whith )a diskdefragger in RAID 5.
I asked the digital rep who installed the system , but he had no answer.

Thanks in advance

Hasse.

   There is no answer...

Disk defragmentation tools should be compatible with RAID5, please
   contact the defragmentation vendor.

There are certainly workloads around that do require the use of a disk
defragmentation tool, but first determine if you actually have excessive
   and uncontrollable disk fragmentation...

I've seldom seen the need for a defragmentation tool, with appropriate
available free space on the disk(s), and with the approrpriate file
extension quantities in applications that would tend to fragment the
disk, and with an occasional (eg: biannual) disk image BACKUP and
restoration operations. (And an occasional disk BACKUP/IMAGE is a
good idea regardless of any defragmentationt tool...)
