We order spare drives that are supposed to be low level formatted for VMS, but when we install them, we get a Fatal Drive Error. Is there a utility for performing a low level format on these drives? We had heard that formatting them was performed on by DEC. Any information on this subject would be great and thank you in advance. Dave Nichols [email protected]

1617.1 | Contact Drive Vendor For Assistance | XDELTA::HOFFMAN | Steve, OpenVMS Engineering | Thu Feb 20 1997 16:15 | 20 |
You will want to contact the drive vendor for this assistance. Storage diagnostics -- diagnostic software thats write low-level formating information onto an `unformatted' disk -- are available for purchase from DIGITAL. DIGITAL's service organization can also often be retained to perform necessary disk formatting. Contact the drive vendor, or contact the local DIGITAL service office for assistance rewriting the format. If you wish to purchase the diagnostics, you will want to contact 1-800-DIGITAL or your local DIGITAL office. Be aware that there may be configuration, firmware, cabling, drive settings, or drive compatibility issues -- there may be more than the low-level drive format involved in this problem. (`System integration', generic device support, and device testing can be a rather involved and potentially expensive process.) |
