114.0. "Digital UNIX - SunOS - Ingres/Net problem" by COPCLU::BRIAN (Brian Krause @DMA, System Specialist) Thu Mar 06 1997 10:39

    Hi,

    We have a new Digital UNIX customer. Before we went on stage, they had two Sun
    SPARCservers running in an Ingres/Net configuration. One machine as
    Application machine with Ingres/Net client, the other as Ingres server.

    We offered them an Alpha as Database server. For various reasons they
    cannot port their application for about another half a year. So they
    still need to use the Sun for a while. We said: "No problem - just use
    the Alpha as Ingres server"

    So ... that was the history now the problem: When they use Ingres/Net
    from the Ingres Client on Sun pulling data from an Ingres Server on
    Sun, they get resonable response times. When they do exatly the same
    from the Ingres Client on Sun pulling data from an Ingres Server on
    Alpha, they get response times that vary a lot - from resonable (i.e.
    about under a second) to about 5 seconds. That is not satisfying.

    The Alpha has no bottlenecks in Memory, CPU or Disk I/O. There are no
    problems on their network.

    When we try to do sql statements directly on the Alpha, it is FAST!

    We have changed the ipmtu on the network interface to 1500 in order to
    match the Suns IP packet sizes. Also we have tried to change the
    sysconfigtab parameter tcp_mssdflt to 1500 with no result.

    We believe that the problem should be found in the surrondings of the
    network, but we cannot find anything wrong. For example delivers ping
    responsetimes from 0-1 ms.

    So: What could we do - any tunings / patches?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian.

    The configuration:

    The Database server:
    	AlphaServer 4100 with 2 5/400 CPU's
    	512 Mbytes of Memory
    	10 RZ29 (Raid 0+1) on HSZ40
    	Digital UNIX 4.0B
    	OpenIngres 1.2/00

    The Sun client:
    	SPARCserver 670MP with 2 125Mhz processors
    	SunOS 4.1.3_DBE1.3
    	Ingres 6.4/05
    	A home-maid Unistar application

    Please find in the next reply the output from sys_check.

This script gathers system configuration information

and does simple checks of some parameters. It is useful

for system administrators to learn about their system, and to

provide consolidated information to service personnel.

The <tt>inittab(4)</tt> file provides the

The init program reads the inittab file each

time init is invoked (in particular, when the

instructions for the default initialization,

the creation and control of processes at each

run level, and the getty command, which

controls the activation of terminal lines.

<p>

lockinfo prints out lock statistics on multiprocessor

systems (SMP). lockinfo should be run when the system

is performing a given workload in steady state.

lockinfo requires the lockmode

of the system to be set to 4. This is done by adding the

following lines to the /etc/sysconfigtab file, and rebooting

the system.

<p>

<pre>

generic:

lockmode=4

</pre>

Running in lockmode 4 does have a negative performance

impact on the system. The lines should be removed and

the system rebooted after gathering the statistics

</p>

<pre>

Your current lockmode is 2. Lock statistics are maintained

only if a system is booted with lockmode 4.

<p>

kprofile(1) allows the kernel to be profiled with the

prof(1) command. To run kprofile, the system configuration

file ( /usr/sys/TITAN ) must include:

<pre>

pseudo-device pfm

</pre>

and the profile devices must be created in /dev via:

<pre>

cd /dev

MAKEDEV pfcntr

MAKEDEV prf

</pre>

Reboot the system and run in steady state

with the application load. Run kprofile for some

duration of time (need to Ctrl-C to exit it)...one to

a few minutes is normally sufficient. kprofile creates

a file called kmon.out.   Run

<pre>

prof /vmunix kmon.out

</pre>

to view the profile data for the workload that was running.

114.2Interested in output from sys_check?COPCLU::BRIANBrian Krause @DMA, System SpecialistThu Mar 06 1997 10:499
    Well - never promise something you can't keep !

    I intended to put the output from sys_check here, but notes wouldn't
    let me because of the length.

    If it's of any interest - please indicate where I should post it.

    Regards,
    Brian.

Hi

 Could this be a delayed ack problem in the network?

Have you tried tuning the tcp delayed ack?

Just a wag...

114.4Problem maybe on SunCOPCLU::BRIANBrian Krause @DMA, System SpecialistMon Mar 10 1997 02:5321
    Hi again,

    Re .3 - Well Eric, It seems as if the network is running like a dream.
    	    We may try this later.

    Right now we are following another path. We got a database test tool
    from the Ingres partner (something similar to TPC benchmark). It
    delivers lots of numbers for different transactions, and we are trying
    it in different configurations.

    It seems as if the problem may reside om the Sun client machine when
    it's running Ingres/Net client.

    We are currently trying to setup the application and Ingres/net on
    another Sun with another O/S version.

    It would be nice if someone could post a message here saying for
    example "We have tried this - it runs fine!". Could it be true that
    noone has tried the combination Ingres/net client on SunOS, Server on
    Digital UNIX?

114.5Problem solved nowCOPCLU::BRIANBrian Krause @DMA, System SpecialistWed Mar 12 1997 04:3220
     Hi again,

     The problem is solved now. It turned out to be a defective transceiver on
     on the Sun's network connection. A very strange error giving perfect
     responsetime for small packets (like default ping packets) and a random
     delay for bigger packets (used in for example Ingres/Net communication)
     The delay can be from zero up to several seconds. With no network errors!

     With a new transceiver we get very good results. For example a test:

	Native on Sun:			23 sec
	Sun Client, Alpha Server: 7,8 sec
	Native on Alpha:		3,6 sec

     We're very satisfied with that! This test shows that Alpha is a better
     choise. It also gives a good motivation to get the allpication ported
     to Alpha sooner than originally planned.

     Regards,
     Brian.
