1.0 FORMAT:
1.1 MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY: [0m
ALL DEC employees. *
Non-employees who are current members will be allowed to remain, as long as their
spouse remains in the league and remains a DEC employee. Any member of the league
who leaves DEC during the season will be allowed to finish the season as a member
in full-standing, but will not be allowed to return to the league next season.
* 1. In the past, non-employee spouses had been allowed to join the league as long
as the employee spouse was a member of the league also. Prior to the start
of the 1983 season, the committee decided to stop this practice in order to
give all DEC employees a fair chance of getting into the league. This policy
does not conflict with any current Employee Activity policy.
2. Prior league members and alternates who are no longer employees of Digital
Equipment Corporation may continue to participate in the Digital Maynard Golf
League as long as their spouse is an employee or retiree of Digital Equipment
Corporation.
[1m
1.2 PLACE: [0m
North and South courses at Stow Acres C.C., Stow, Mass.
[1m
1.3 TIME + TEES: [0m
The league is divided into groups that have assigned tee times starting at
approximately 4:00 and 5:00 PM. A schedule of tee times will be published for
each division at the beginning of the season. Players must be ready for their
scheduled tee time. If a player is missing from a foursome, the other members of
the foursome must tee off when called by the starter and cannot wait delay for
missing members. Players who arrive late will have to meet their foresome on the
course and continue play from there. If a foresome misses their assigned tee time
they will have to wait until the starter can fit them onto the course.
The following tees will be used for all regular season matches, playoffs and
tournaments:
A Flight Men = Championship Tees (Blue)
B & C Flight Men = Men's Tees (White)
Women = Women's Tees (Red)
NOTE: Alternates substituting for a player in a particular flight MUST play from
the tees that that flight is assigned to play from.
[1m
1.4 FLIGHTS + TEAMS: [0m
Flights are formed by dividing the league into three groups according to
handicaps. Flight A consists of 9-hole handicaps of 0-7; Flight B, 8-14; Flight
C, 15-24. Partners can not use a handicap that is greater than the maximum
handicap for their specific flight (7 for A, 14 for B, 24 for C). Anyone whose
handicap exceeds the upper limit of their flight will be flagged with an asterisk
(*) next to their handicap. Players whose handicaps exceed the bounds of their
existing flight range, may find themselves moved to the next appropriate flight
next season. In the case of new league members and others with no partner
preference, the committee has assisted in pairing teams.
[1m
1.5 TYPE OF PLAY: [0m
FOUR-BALL match play - A match in which two players play their better ball against
the better ball of two other players. Please read Rule 30 in the Rules of
Golf/USGA for information on match play.

| Because of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, matches regularly scheduled for
| Friday May 23 will be played on Friday May 30.
| Playoffs will be held during the weeks of Aug. 25, Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22.
Three full-day outings will be scheduled to take place during the golf season.
Information regarding these tournaments will be published at a later date.
An end of season banquet will be held with additional information to be published
later.

3.0 AWARDS: [0m
TO BE DETERMINED AT A LATER DATE
[1m
4.0 GENERAL RULES:
4.1 DUES: (also see- 4.12 GREEN FEES:) [0m
Dues are $25.00 for full-time members and $25.00 for alternates payable at the
time of registration. They are used to help defray the expenses incurred by
awards and tournaments. Dues and green fees are NOT refundable after the start of
the season. Also, benefits accrued by paying dues are not transferrable; ie,
someone cannot take your place on a team, or play in a tournament. New members
who join the league during the season will still be required to pay full
membership dues.
[1m
1997 GOLF LEAGUE RULES PAGE 3
4.2 ALTERNATES: [0m
There are a number of golfers who for one reason or another are not able to play
regularly on a once a week basis. In addition, there are new members who wish to
join the league after the start of the season. For these reasons we have an
alternate list from which regular team players can choose replacements when they
are unable to attend a match. Players requiring an alternate MUST find one with a
handicap within the normal range of their flight. There is no limit on the number
of matches alternates can play, but alternates are not to be the private
replacement of any certain player or team; therefore, an alternate must play for
the first team that asks them. Before an alternate is eligible to play his
handicap must be verified by the committee and posted on the alternate list (no
last minute ringers). All team vacancies must be filled from the published
alternate list by using the proper handicap range. Players must first choose an
alternate within their own flight, preferably as close to their own handicap as
possible. If it is not possible to obtain an alternate from within your own
flight, you may choose a person from another flight, preferably with a handicap
close to your own, by following these guidelines:
FLIGHT | A | B | C |
---------------------------------------------------
Normal 9-Hole | | | |
Handicap Range | 0 - 7 | 8 - 14 | 15 - 24 |
---------------------------------------------------
Handicap Range for | | | |
Choosing Alternates | 0 - 10 | 4 - 18 | 10 - 24 |
---------------------------------------------------
An alternate may be chosen from the next flight as long as their handicap falls
within the above prescribed alternate range. Alternates must use their own
handicap or the maximum permitted for the flight in which they will participate,
whichever is lower.
EXAMPLES:
An alternate may be chosen from Flight C to play in Flight B if their
handicap is not greater than 18. If the alternate actually has a handicap of
18, then he/she must play with a handicap of 14* for that round.
Similarly, an alternate from Flight A may be chosen to play in Flight B as
long as their handicap is not lower than 4. If the player's handicap is
lower than 8, he/she would play the round using their own lower handicap.
Alternates should pay green fees to the team member they are substituting for and
not the pro shop.
[1mAlternates will not be allowed to take part in the playoffs.[0m
[1m[4mAlternates must have established an official handicap by playing a minimum of 4[0m
[1m[4mmatches before being eligible to win NET prizes at any outings.[0m
[1m
1997 GOLF LEAGUE RULES PAGE 4
[0m
[1m
4.3 ATTENDANCE: [0m
Players who join the league as regular team members (not as alternates) are making
a commitment to play a full season. We do not want part-time team members or
those who disappear as the league progresses. Once during the season it will be
acceptable for both members of a team to have alternates for the same match. For
all other matches at least one member of the team must participate. It is also
recognized that most of us at one time or another have unavoidable circumstances
(vacations, travel, emergencies, meetings, etc.) which make it impossible to play
every match. We don't expect every player to make every match but we do expect
that a reasonable attempt will be made to arrange for an alternate. You alone are
responsible for arranging for an alternate. It is not the responsibility of your
partner or the committee to do this for you. THREE consecutive absences from your
team, or 5 overall, may result in removal from your team to the alternate list,
without refund of dues or green fees. When selecting an alternate, you must
choose a name from the published alternate list as stated above in Section 4.2.
[1m
4.4 RESCHEDULED MATCHES: [0m
In order that we can publish accurate and up to date standings and handicaps, it
is important that matches are played on time. Matches delayed by inclement
weather usually affect a complete division and are unavoidable. Post-played
matches WILL NOT BE ALLOWED unless regularly scheduled play has been cancelled by
Stow Acre management due to inclement weather. This decision will be posted in
the Stow C.C. clubhouse. In addition, when possible the committee will publish
an announcement on the network. In the event that play is officially cancelled
due to inclement weather, the pro shop will issue rain checks so that matches can
be played before the next scheduled match. You must show up to obtain your rain
check.
[1m
4.5 FORFEITS:[0m
Teams that fail to play a match as scheduled shall forfeit. A forfeit is worth
a minimum of five (5) points and a maximum of nine (9) points to the team
receiving it. The team that receives the forfeit must play on the scheduled night
and turn in a scorecard.
Points should be scored based on a match played against par. A team should score
1/2 point for a 'better ball' net par and 1 point for a 'better ball' net birdie
or better. If they score a 'better ball' net bogie or worse they score 0 points.
Final points for the team should be the actual points scored or 5, whichever is
greater. The forfeiting team should receive 0 points on the scorecard.
Teams that are repeat forfeit offenders (more than 3 times) will be removed from
league play. All previous matches will be voided and byes awarded to all other
teams with the resulting change in the standings.

[0m
[1m
4.6 HANDICAP CALCULATION: [0m
A. The scoring software for the league will compute handicaps as follows:
1. A player begins the season with a handicap equal to the final handicap
of last season. New players are assigned handicaps based on the
player's first round of play at Stow. SEE SECTION 4.6 B.
2. Beginning the season 4 equal scores, representing the average for the
established starting handicap, will be used as the data base for the
handicap system. These 4 scores will be replaced 1 at a time by the
first four actual scores as they occur during the season. Handicaps
will be based on the average of the best 2 of the four scores. This
prevents dramatic handicap changes in the first few weeks of the season.
3. Scores are entered into the handicap system for each round played. Four
scores will be in the system until the initial scores are replaced as
defined in paragraph 4.6.A.2. and then the data base will be expanded
to include all current year scores.
4. The formula for handicap is 96% of the difference between the average of
the best 50% of the scores and the average 9-hole course rating (35.7).
EXAMPLE: Player begins the season with an 11 handicap. This means that he
has an average score of 47 in the first 4 weeks score slots to begin the
season.
Week 0 (start) scores 47,47,47,47 hdcp=11 (use 47,47)
Week 1 (shoots 50) scores 50,47,47,47 hdcp=11 (use 47,47)
Week 2 (shoots 48) scores 50,48,47,47 hdcp=11 (use 47,47)
Week 3 (shoots 50) scores 50,48,50,47 hdcp=12 (use 47,48)
Week 4 (shoots 52) scores 50,48,50,52 hdcp=13 (use 48,50)
Week 5 (shoots 50) scores 50,48,50,52,50 hdcp=13 (use 48,50,50)
Scores for handicap calculations should be adjusted for Equitable Stroke
Control (ESC) as indicated in Rule 4.11, Note 8.
B. In order to start the season with handicaps for everyone, new members
(including new alternates) should play a round at Stow C.C. prior to the
| official league startup (April 28). The scorecard from this round will be
| submitted for handicapping purposes. Cards should be dropped in the DEC
| scorecard box in the clubhouse prior to April 25th. If the new member is
unable to play this early round, then his/her first night of league play will
determine the handicap. Teams playing with a new member will then be
responsible for calculating the new member's handicap the first week, from a
chart that will be posted in the clubhouse (see Handicap Conversion Chart -
page 14). The team will then re-calculate each hole just played using the
new member's handicap, and then complete the DEC scorecard. [1mThe committee
reserves the right to readjust gross errors in the starting handicap of new
members and may also re-calculate all match points won or lost prior to the
readjustment. Any adjustments will be made prior to the 4th week of play.[0m
C. Alternates must play a minimum of 36 holes at Stow C.C. in order to
establish a handicap, and be allowed to compete for handicap prizes in any
tournaments. These holes must be played during league play. Attested
scorecards must be dropped in the Digital league scorecard box located at
Stow C.C.
[1m
1997 GOLF LEAGUE RULES PAGE 6
4.7 SANDBAGGING: [0m
The technique of keeping your handicap as high as possible is called
"sandbagging". Most members of the league consider it cheating and would prefer
to try their best at all times with the course and par as the primary opponents.
Winning matches is fun but it shouldn't be done at any cost. In order for you to
protect the league from sandbaggers it is necessary for you to enforce the
following: If neither team will gain any advantage (win or tie) by your action
you [1m[4mmust[0m concede your opponent's next stroke by physically removing his/her ball
with a club or otherwise and he/she must not continue play on that hole. That
means that he/she must add one (1) stroke to the number already taken at that
point and record it on the scorecard. For an A Flight player, the score shall not
be less than par; B Flight, not less than 1 over par; C Flight not less than 2
over par. Please do not question your opponents' right to this standard. Note:
If a player plays a stroke to indicate the line to his/her partner after that
stroke has been conceded, loss of the hole will result.
[1m
4.8 BYES: [0m
In some flights there might not be a full complement of 8 teams. For the night
that any team is scheduled to play a "BYE" opponent, the team is automatically
awarded 6 points and is not required to turn in a scorecard.
[1m
4.9 STROKES: [0m
The lowest handicap in the foursome is used to determine the number of strokes
given to each member of the foursome. The following example illustrates a typical
foursome playing a Flight B match.
------------------------------------
| Player | Handicap | Strokes |
------------------------------------
|A Tom | 8 | 0 |
|B Mary | 10 | 2 |
|C Bob | 12 | 4 |
|D Dave | 14* | 6 |
------------------------------------
In this example, players B, C and D receive strokes from player A. Player B gets
one (1) stroke on the first two (2) stroke holes (see Section 4.10 for more
information). Player C gets a stroke on the first 4 stroke holes. Although
Player D may have a 15 handicap, he/she must play with the maximum handicap for
Flight B which is 14; therefore, Player D only gets a stroke on the first 6
stroke holes.
[1m
4.10 STROKE HOLES: [0m
The stroke holes are based upon the degree of difficulty as determined by Stow
Acres; therefore, in the following table, holes with the lowest number have the
greatest degree of difficulty.

[1m* EXCEPTION TO STOW ACRES SCORE CARD
4.11 SCORING: [0m
A team can win a maximum of nine (9) points per match. One (1) point is awarded
to a team for each hole won. A half (1/2) point is awarded to each team for each
hole halved. The Stow Acres scorecards should be used to record the match scores
during play. After completing the match, a point scoring card, which will be
available in the pro-shop, must be filled out completely and deposited in the
DIGITAL box in the clubhouse.
How To Score The DEC Scorecard (See sample card - page 8)
1. When on the course score the actual number of strokes taken (include
concessions).
Note: USGA Rule 2-4 - Conceding opponent's next stroke "When the opponent's
ball has come to rest, the player may concede the opponent to have holed out
with his next stroke and may remove the opponent's ball with a club or
otherwise. If the opponent's next stroke has not been conceded, the opponent
shall play without delay in the correct order."
2. Be sure to circle the proper flight and course played.
3. All matches MUST be played using handicaps calculated as the result of the
previous week's play.
4. Fill in the actual score in the top blocks. We need these actual scores to
determine handicap holes annually.
5. Circle those scores where handicap strokes were awarded.
6. Adjust the actual score by placing the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) score
in the blocks underneath the actual score. See example. It is not necessary
to fill in all the control score blocks, only those that change.
[1m
1997 GOLF LEAGUE RULES PAGE 8
[0m
7. The control score is placed in the total column not the actual score. In the
example the actual score for R. Smith is 53; J. Jones is 47; T. Turner
is 41; B. Davis is 43.
8. Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) scores are determined as follows:
Your 9-Hole Handicap Maximum ESC score you can take on any hole
less than 5 6
5 thru 9 7
10 thru 14 8
15 thru 19 9
20 thru 24 10
9. Be sure to fill in the points won in the correct team block.
10. Circle the appropriate answer if the match was a forfeit or if there was a
no-show.
11. Cards will not be checked by a committee member for accuracy. Accuracy is
the responsibility of the players.
12. Be sure the card is correct before signing. Except for high control scores,
cards will stand as submitted.
13. A player from each team MUST sign the final card for it to be official.
[1m ONCE A SIGNED CARD IS SUBMITTED THE RESULTS ARE OFFICIAL AND FINAL. [0m
No changes will be made, regardless of the error. It is the responsibility of
each team to check the official card before it is signed and submitted.[1m

Players must record their actual scores in the top square and their ESC score for
handicap purposes in the bottom square (See rule 6.11 note 8). Total score will
be the sum of the ESC scores (bottom row) plus actual scores (top row) when no
adjustment was made.
Sign the score card to attest to its validity (both teams must sign the card). If
team that does not sign the card their individual scores will count towards
handicap but they will receive no points for the match. The team that did sign
the card will not be affected. You are responsible for the accuracy of your
opponents scores as well as your own. For handicapping purposes be sure to reduce
any scores in excess of the allowable ESC limits. A designated monitor will be
responsible for collecting the score cards and entering the information sheets
into the computer. If you play on the scheduled night, it is your responsibility
to put your score card in the Digital box. If there is no score card submitted
for any match on a given night, it will be assumed that the match was not played
and both teams will receive zero (0) points for the match. There can be no
exceptions to this rule.
[1m
4.12 GREEN FEES: (also see- 4.1 DUES:)[0m
All members are required to prepay their green fees for regular season play with
the submission of the application. No member or substitute should pay the pro
shop for green fees of regular season matches. It is the responsibility of the
member to be reimbursed by the substitute for green fees as posted in the pro
shop. The golf committee will not make any reimbursements for green fees. For
special tournaments and playoff matches each player should pay green fees directly
to the pro shop.
If any member is forced to terminate their membership in the league no
reimbusement of green fees will be made by the league. The committee will provide
assistance in finding a replacement, but it is the member's responsibility to find
a new member and be reimbursed for unused green fees.
[1m
4.13 COURSE: [0m
A schedule of starting times and starting holes will be published and distributed
to all members prior to the beginning of the season. All players should be
prepared to tee off at their assigned time. No foursome will be allowed to wait
for a player who is missing. If a foursome misses their tee time they will have
to contact the starter or pro shop to be rescheduled that night at the discretion
of the starter. Be sure to indicate on your scoring sheet the actual course
played.
[1m
4.14 INCLEMENT WEATHER: [0m
Stow Acres management will decide if conditions are too poor to play. You must be
present at Stow to determine if the match will be played. Conditions there have a
habit of being different than at the various plant locations and we don't want any
needless postponements. The announcement of cancellation for the day will be
posted in the clubhouse prior to the beginning of tee times. The committee, when
possible, will also publish a message on the network. The Stow Acres Pro Shop
will issue rain checks to one member of each foursome and matches must be played
before the next scheduled match. See RESCHEDULED MATCHES for more information.
[1m
4.15 SUSPENDED PLAY: [0m
Any member of a foursome has the right to suspend play and take shelter at any
time he/she feels there is danger from an electrical storm in the area. Rain or
visibility by themselves are not valid reasons to suspend play unless it is by
mutual agreement of all members of the foursome.
[1m
1997 GOLF LEAGUE RULES PAGE 10
[0m
Suspended matches must be resumed from the point at which they were stopped, and
completed before the next week's scheduled match; or by mutual agreement all
remaining points may be split. If the match is resumed, players shall record
actual scores. If a match is resumed on a different day each player will be
required to pay green fees to the pro shop. If the remaining holes are split,
then each player will record par, plus the player's full handicap on unfinished
holes.
[1m
4.16 PROTESTS: [0m
Players should make every effort to resolve their differences in an honest,
friendly manner. Any problems that cannot be resolved by the teams involved must
be submitted to a member of the rules committee in writing on the back of the
scorecard the night of the match. The rules committee will resolve these
differences using the USGA rules as modified by the league. Keep in mind the
intent of the league which is: "TO ENJOY THE GAME OF GOLF IN A FRIENDLY,
COMPETITIVE, SPIRIT."
[1m
4.17 PLAYOFF SELECTION PROCESS: [0m
Each flight will have a separate playoff. The maximum number of teams making the
playoffs in each flight will be limited to the number of single elimination
matches that can be completed (assuming 1 match per week) within 5 weeks of
| playoffs. This season, there will be: 16 teams - A Flight, 32 teams - B Flight,
| 14 teams - C Flight

5.0 PLAYING RULES: [0m
In general the rules are as stated in the USGA Rulebook. Pay special attention to
the areas which refer to Match Play as opposed to Stroke (Medal) Play and
specifically to Fourball Match Play (USGA Rule 30). At this time it should be
pointed out that there is no such thing as an 'obscure rule' and there is nothing
wrong in expecting that all rules be observed.

5.1 PUTTING: [0m
A. During the play of a hole, a player shall not test the surface of the putting
green by rolling or roughening or scraping the surface. (USGA Rule 16-1;d)
B. Before a ball on the putting green is lifted, its position shall be marked.
If the player fails to mark the position of the ball, the player shall incur
a penalty of one stroke and the ball shall be replaced. (USGA Rule 20-1)
C. If the player's ball knocks the opponent's ball into the hole, the opponent
shall be deemed to have holed out at his last stroke. . . . If the
player's ball stopped on the spot formerly occupied by the opponent's ball,
the player shall first play another stroke, after which the opponent shall
replace his ball. (USGA Rule 19-5)
D. There is no penalty if a player's ball moves any other ball in the match.
The owner of the moved ball shall replace his ball. (USGA Rule 18-5)

5.2 LOCAL RULES: [0m
PREFERRED LIES - (up to 6 inches) may be taken any time ball is on the fairway of
the hole being played. A preferred lie is not permitted to clear any natural
object that may tend to interfere with play. It should be noted that USGA
rules do not use terms such as 'fairway' or 'rough' but only 'through the
green'. For purposes of this rule 'fairway' is considered to be the short
mowed grass area on the course. If in doubt about the fairway, consult your
opponent before moving your ball. The penalty for moving your ball in the
rough shall be one stroke.

OUT OF BOUNDS, and LOST BALL - at their option the owner can use the stroke and
distance rule as USGA Rule 27 allows or may play another ball from the fairway at
the point of exit from the fairway with a two (2) stroke penalty.
How to use Out of Bounds or Lost Ball rules - Two players hit their ball out
of bounds. Player A can take advantage of the relatively good distance he
hit by dropping a ball at the point of exit with a two stroke penalty (local
rule). He now lies three, hitting four. Player B's ball may have traveled a
good distance also. However the point of exit is so close to the spot where
the owner previously hit that the two stroke penalty would not be a wise
choice. He should use the USGA rule as stated and play another ball from the
original point. If this was from the tee he may re-tee the ball. He lies
two hitting three. If he can successfully hit this shot he could possibly be
equal to player A and now both would lie three.
Rule of thumb to use would be: Always take USGA stroke and distance penalty
if the yardage traveled in bounds is short and you have reasonable confidence
in hitting the next shot better.
PUTTING OUT - Once a player has begun putting it is their option to continue until
they have holed out. No partner or opponent can insist that they not finish
once they have begun.
UNPLAYABLE LIE - A player can declare their ball unplayable at any time. They
have three options (each of which will cost them one penalty stroke - USGA
Rule 28):
1. They may return to the point they took the previous stroke.
2. They may drop straight back from the original position as far as they want
to go, keeping the point of unplayable lie between them and the hole.
3. They may drop the ball anywhere within two clublengths of unplayable lie
not nearer the hole.
NOTE: The fact that relief from an unplayable lie may or may not avoid
'woods' or 'rough' is immaterial except that option 2 and 3 require that an
unplayable lie within a hazard (sandtrap) must remain in the hazard. There
is no penalty for playing a wrong ball from a hazard.

5.3 COURTESY: [0m
1. Be prompt in arriving at the course.
2. Know who your opponents are and the handicaps before you get to the course.
3. Notify your partner and your opponents if you are going to have an alternate.
You must arrange for an alternate if you are going to be absent. Don't make
your partner call alternates.
4. Try to arrange for alternates well in advance. Vacations seldom come up
without several weeks notice and you should always be able to find an
alternate.
5. Replace all divots and repair all ball marks on the green.
6. Always rake sandtraps on leaving.
7. Keep quiet and still while others are playing.
8. Allow faster players to play through. Don't resume playing until they are
out of range.

9. The maximum time allowed to search for a ball is 5 minutes.
10. Move off the green as soon as you are finished putting.
11. When near or on the green, do not stand in the straight line from the
shooter's ball to the hole, either behind the ball or behind the hole.
12. You must always hole-out with the same ball you teed off with unless it is
damaged. In this case you must get consent of opponents to change balls
before the next stroke is played.
