1080.0. "JOB: Digital UNIX Problem Manager in Nashua, NH" by SMURF::HAYDEN () Tue Jan 28 1997 14:20
The UNIX Support Engineering Group (USEG) at ZKO wants to hire a top
notch problem manager.
What is a problem manager? Well, in our group a problem manager is a
person with overall responsibility for managing critical customer problems
escalated to USEG, which is part of Digital's UNIX Software Business
Segment.
- When a problem is first escalated, he/she works to make sure that
the problem is real, that it's critical to the customer, that it's
caused by a defect in a product which USEG supports, and that adequate
information is available for engineering problem isolation to begin.
- Throughout the life of a problem, a USEG problem manager ensures
that appropriate engineering and field resources are assigned to the
problem, that progress is being made in solving the problem, that
assigned engineers are not unduly burdened with non-technical issues
while trying to work technical issues, that management's needs for
status information are met and that the customer's needs for a stable
system are satisfied.
- Each assigned problem is managed like a mini-project, with its own
action plan, schedule, completion criteria, computer systems and
engineering resources. Each of them also has a unique set of timeframes
and unique people, political, technical and administrative challenges
to be overcome.
This job isn't for everyone. The environment in which Digital UNIX
Problem Management operates is fast-paced, demanding, stressful, yet very
rewarding. The ideal candidate for this job is someone who:
- has a solid understanding of software engineering theory and
practice,
- has managed a software engineering group within the last few years,
- can communicate effectively with engineers as well as with managers,
- has a repertoire of influence skills,
- is a self-starter,
- can deal effectively with multiple activities simultaneously,
- has excellent writing and speaking skills,
- thrives on being very busy,
- is not bothered if their hands get dirty doing real work,
- doesn't panic even when there's reason to,
- has an excellent feel for how Digital works (and doesn't work),
- has an ego big enough to sustain them through the rough spots, but
not big enough to be the rough spots,
- can invent innovative ways to solve problems,
- is not afraid to be dropped into unfamiliar, high anxiety situations,
- is not thin-skinned, and
- wants to make a significant contribution to Digital customer
satisfaction.
UNIX knowledge and skills would be a plus, but aren't a requirement.
There are plenty of opportunities to learn UNIX; we're more interested in
those other characteristics described above.
If you believe you're qualified for this job (Personnel Requisition
#H588414) and are interested in it, please send me your resume by e-mail.
But don't be surprised if I don't respond immediately; we're very busy.
