Hey dudes, my ass has been sold. DEC has sold off my
software project, ObjectBroker, to another company (BEA Systems).
All the folks who are affected are excited about it, because
BEA seems to have a clear vision of how to develop and market
their middleware products. If we succeed, we can make a nice
pile of money on stock options. I also will be stepping into
5 weeks of vacation per year (yippee!).
I'm hoping this won't affect my participation in the
MRL this year. I'll officially become a BEA employee in early
to mid March. In theory, this would dictate that I be
disconnected from the DEC intranet, which would make participation
difficult for me. Realistically, they can't pull the plug that
fast. I expect we'll be able to make it through the draft with
no changes. After that, I might have difficulty accessing the
notes file, but I can get enough information through mail if
notes are a problem. ObjectBroker will most likely still be a
ZKO resident for 6 months, so that will go a long way toward
access.
As for next year, I better get rolling on web implementations
of this stuff...

| Sam,
Having a better chance at actually winning one of these years isn't worth
losing you, so I hope you stay on the net for a long while. Since it's
being promoted as a partnership with BEA, we might not even have to change
the rule about teams being owned "by a Digital employee". I understand
that DEC has an equity position in BEA so maybe we'll wind up making some
money off your efforts, after all.

| Sorry to those of you who got multiple copies of the Freeze 1 stats.
The new Exchange email addresses broke the POST_STATS.COM file. But,
it seems to be fixed now...
If anyone didn't get 2 stats reports today (totals and deltas), or if
you'd like them sent to a different email address, let me know.
