183.0. "First impressions from a new user of V2.5" by CHEFS::espol1.gmt.dec.com::PITT (Gone with the winsock ...) Fri Feb 28 1997 11:17
First impressions from a new user. (I've been a heavy user
of notes for very many years, always on VMS, usually on a
workstation. I use the keypad and mouse "all the time" for
navigation on VMS ...)
1) It was moderately hard to set up, though this is solely caused by the
problems of IP and Decnet mixing ...
2) The windows within the product are inflexible. I should like to have my
read window full screen, but a smaller edit window. I don't think this
can be done in V2.5.
3) I work from a laptop, and there is no effective keypad on it. I
therefore find navigation a very great pain. In particular, I would like
an effective right mouse button menu, like the one within VAX Notes V2.5.
4) I find the button bar very difficult to use. It is very far from
intuitive, and having the prompt text appearing at the bottom of the
screen makes it difficult to find. At least as a new user, I would value
having text labels on the buttons as well as the drawings ...
I should like to be able to specify "autowrap at column 80" or something
like that in the edit window. Or maybe I can do that already, but have
not found it.
Anyway, I look forward to growing to love the product as I have loved VAX
Notes for many years. A great step forward would (will?) be a Windows 95
style version, which I hope is being worked on!
