2216.0. "HP - interoperability??" by SNOC02::DEGROOT () Wed Apr 30 1997 11:00

*** cross posted LINKWORKS_V3 & LINKWORKS_V3_2 ***

Hi,

We have a customer who will be going to tender shortly for an upgrade
to their central AlphaServers 2100's running D-UNIX 3.2c and Linkworks 3.0
(They also have a number of cell AlphaServers that they will be retaining).
Their current version of Oracle is 7.2.2.4

The customer wants to stay with AlphaServers, but need to go to an
open tender because they are a government department.

HP has targetted this account as a MUST get deal - at any cost. They
will effectively try to buy the business.

Rather than be a price cutting exercise as well for Digital, we would
prefer some nice FUD!!

So - apart from some of the obvious issues of having to manage a mixed
operating system environment, what issues are likely to arise with having a
HP box as a central Linkworks server to a number of remote D-Unix linkworks
servers?

	Some thoughts:-

	- Is Linkworks 3.X only supported on HP-UX 10.0 or will it run on HP-UX
10.2 (the release for the "K" series)?

	- Just to check - will Linkworks 3.X work on D-Unix 4.0b (or 4.0c)??

	- Will it be painful to migrate their 3.0 Linkworks to 3.08 or 3.2??

	- Would the remote systems (running the older versions) have any issues
running with a central system running the newer versions? D-UNIX any
	  difference to HP-UX?

Any help at all would be appreciated,

Paul deGroot (very much a Linkworks novice!!)

At the moment 308 runs on HP-UX 10.0. LinkWorks 3.2 will be released at the end of May
on D-Unix. Ports to other platforms follow later.

        - Just to check - will Linkworks 3.X work on D-Unix 4.0b (or 4.0c)??
Yes, 4.0B. Haven't seen C yet but that probably doesn't cause any incompatibilities.

        - Will it be painful to migrate their 3.0 Linkworks to 3.08 or 3.2??
The biggest pain is that all components need to be on the same version to be able to run.
You can only mix 307 and 308 clients and servers. If you move on to 3.2, you need to
upgrade everything.

        - Would the remote systems (running the older versions) have any issues
running with a central system running the newer versions? D-UNIX any
          difference to HP-UX?
