2210.0. "Failover system and default desk" by KERNEL::SIMPSONR (fred) Mon Apr 28 1997 18:58

UNIX V3-2G LinkWorks V3-07

The customer explained that a user has the opportunity to log onto their normal
desk or their reserve desk. When a machine goes down, they log onto their
reserve desk and continue to work as if nothing had happened. This is possible
because they use a failover system whereby a duplicate cell is being updated
continuously on another machine. However if they are not aware that a machine
has gone down and try to log on their normal desk they get an error saying that
the desk is not reachable. They then get an option to cancel or an option to
enter another desk as their default. They enter in their reserve desk and get
exactly the same message. This is wrong because their reserve desk should work.
The reason it does not is because ENVIRON.INI is not updated on the fly. To get
in, the user has to cancel (which with this customer's setup means they get
thrown out of windows and relog in) and fire up LinkWorks again. This is a minor
inconvenience but they would appreciate any suggestions?

Cheers,
Richard Simpson.

Richard,

The conclusion is correct. In 3.08 the client exits if the server connection
fails.
