2132.0. "Editing large documents gives "error 10036e in progress could not send message"" by KERNEL::SIMPSONR (fred) Wed Feb 19 1997 12:08

 VMS 6.2 LinkWorks 3.08c

User's try to open large documents, and they get to screen "error 10036e in
progress could not send message to JADE". They also get errors reported in tdf
journal. The documents being edited are on their own desktop and they can
still edit them and save them. The error they get in the tdf journal file are:

  %LNXNET-W-SENDTMO, Socket 00293980 timed out on transmit. Peer = , object =
-LNX-I-MSGFROM, From User SYSTEM, Process OP$TDF, Node JADE at 14-FEB-1997
   10:31:40.77
  -LNX-I-IMAGE, Image file DSA0:[LNX307.SAXPORA.][SERVERS]TDF.EXE;6
    ............... Can't transmit buffer from c#55(2238848)->c#173(2701696),
                    device timeout (556)
    ............... Sending peer = "DECnet:JADE:19011", No error (000000)
    ............... Receiving peer = "INET:147.2.14.11:36345", No error (000000)

This then gets repeated each time the problem occurs.

They have an FDDI cluster so she is suspicious that the buffer size may not be
 high enough. If she does:

  $UCX SHOW COM/MEM

                     Current
  Small Buffers 1000
  Large Buffers 200

Their setup is such that they have 4 servers, each has a single cell, except
one that has two. Each cell has its own pool.

 Any ideas?
 Richard Simpson.

The customer has since called back and said that the full error the user gets
 is:

"Couldn't send data to host, error 10036e in progress could not send message
   to JADE"

Also the user's cannot access the document at all. In fact they get a blank
word document. All the rest of 2132.0 is correct.....

 Cheers,
 Richard.

 Hi,

This problem has now become more urgent, it is now also affecting people using
spreadsheets. Does anyone have any ideas?

 Cheers,
 Richard.

Please try to increase the transmit timeout values in
op$root:[servers]runtdf.com.

Uncomment the lines with LNX$TCPIP_TRANSMIT_TIMEOUT and
LNX$DECNET_TRANSMIT_TIMEOUT
and increase the values to 1000000. Let me know if it helps.

Another check that can be done is the tuning of UCX
Use UCX sho com and UCX sho com/mem

If you seen any drops or waits in small or large buffers, check the peak values versus the
configured values and increase the values if necessary.
Also check the peak versus configured number of device sockets.

 Hi,

 In answer to:

 runtdf.com version is 6 date 3/SEP/1996
It does not contain these two lines!
This .COM file has not been altered by the customer an anyway

Also in answer to reply .4 there is no labouring of the system at all.
There are drops or waits in small or large buffers. The customer is adament
that the peak values versus the configured values are high enough. I have
suggested that she fax in the details, when I get these I will fax them
 to Vincent,

 Cheers,
 Richard.
