| It is a lottery but it's not straight forward. I'm not absolutely sure
but i think that a team can only drop back one slot and can only move up
two slots. So, if you finish dead last, the worst you can do is second
overall. If you finish fifth from the bottom, the best you can do is
third overall. The lottery is also weighted to favor the worst teams.

| Let's see now, where's Bryan Berard playing these days? How's he
doing? I seem to hear his name a lot don't I?

163.4 | Thornton's a lock for #1 | KAOFS::WATTERS | | Wed Feb 19 1997 18:16 | 10 |
| #1 this year is Joe Thornton. A bigger power centreman w/ great puck
handling ability. He was the only non-drafted player to play for Canada
in the World Jr Championship over the holidays.
#2 is Samsonov. Though he's only 17 he's now playing for the Detroit
Vipers of the IHL. Don't be fooled, the IHL is a garbage league. Heck,
Radek Bonk was a sniper in that league when he was 17. Samsonov
is a stocky forward and great scoring ability.

163.5 | Bruins never had a shot at Berard | FSCORE::B_LEURY | | Thu Feb 20 1997 10:21 | 14 |
| re: a few back...
The Bruins never had a shot at Berard. He was picked first overall by
Ottawa in the 1995 draft. He walked out of the rookie camp after the
first day and vowed that he would never play for Ottawa. One of the
first things that Pierre Gauthier did when he came on board was to
trade his rights to the Islanders for the rights to Wade Redden who had
been the second overall pick in the same year. That deal was part of
the three way deal between the Isles-Sens-Leafs that brought Wendy
Clarke back to the Leafs, Beaupre to the Leafs, Rhodes to Ottawa, Straka
to the Isles and Johnsson and Toronto's first round pick in 1997 to the
Isles.
Fletcher lost BIG TIME on that trade!

| Actually Clark went back to the Leafs in a different, really horrible
deal, that also involved Mathieu Schneider, Kenny Jonsson, and the
Leafs' 1997 1st-rounder (& I think some lesser players.) The 3-way
deal involving Rhodes, Beaupre, Berard & Redden was the one that
brought Kirk Muller to the Leafs. Not a great deal for the Leafs, in
retrospect, but not the disaster that the Clark deal was.

| I coulda sworn that the B's did have a shot at Berard but seeing as
how my memory really sucks lately (thankfully the mind is only the
first thing to go) I'll take what you say as what really happened.
Never mind!
