147.1 | MARIO!~ | ASDG::MCNAMARA | strange visitor...... | Mon Apr 14 1997 08:48 | 25 |
| ....sometimes, the true measure of GREAT hockey fans is how well they
respect/treat their opponents, either in Victory or Defeat....
if that's a true statement, the Bruins Fans are the classiest fans
in all of hockey, given the way they saluted Mario yesterday....
the standing ovation near the end of the game (5.5 minutes!) brought
tears to Lemieux's eyes (and mac's as well)...then Cap'n Raymond
presented Mario with a seat from the Old Gahden...don't think any other
team gave Mario anything (in fact, Mario said only 2 opponents gave him
a standing "O", Montreal and Boston)...this was really something to
see fer sure....
oh, yeah, the B's SMOKED the Pens, 7-3...~40 saves for Carey, everyone
was just flying, one of the best games all year (and that's saying
something)....
Bruins have the best shot at the #1 pick w/ a 30% chance.....when did
the League start this lottery sh*t? Seems to me, when Quebec finished
dead-last all those years, they got the #1 pick automatically.....
hope the B's don't get screwed, as San Jose is right B-hind them w/ a
21% chance at the #1 pick....
oh well, it don't seem like playoff time at all.....

147.2 | Good game, nice tribute to Super Mario | DIVER1::MACHADO | Crazy on a ship of fools | Mon Apr 14 1997 10:27 | 25 |
| I had the house to myself yesterday so I grabbed a few brews and
sat down to watch one of the few complete games that I watched this
season. What a game. It's sad to see Lemieux retire. It was also great
to see the Fleece Center faithful pay tribute to a man who over the
years has been a true entertainer.
As far as the game is concerned, Carey is beginning to look like
Jon Casey. Plays a pretty good game, but lets in the one or two soft
ones per game nonetheless. He made some great stops, but he let in that
really soft one from behind the goal line that went in off of the
inside of his left pad, and he was out of position on one or two
glaring occaisions.
Well, that's it for this season. I and the file will be here for
anyone who wants to discuss any playoff action that they are watching.
Hopefully they'll do well in the draft. Did anyone read Kevin Paul
DuPont's column in the Globe yesterday? He said that perhaps the B's
should think of trading their first round picks for a Sakic, or a
Forsberg, or even a Jagr. He thinks that these teams could be
interested in blowing off some $$$ and trading players like that.
Possibly, but would Harry give these kind of guys the $$$ that they
want? I can't see him doing that.

| It's just sad these inspirational players leave the league.
I just hope that the newer players can play at the level the
guys like Lemuix, Neeley, Bourque and Grestzky were/are able to
play at..
I'll miss Lemuix, he was a class act, and just an awesome player.
..
so much for the season,, interesting to see how everything works
out off season...

147.4 | Mario will be missed | ABACUS::FORTIN_C | Worked the Bars & Sideshows..... | Mon Apr 14 1997 12:22 | 15 |

I read DuPonts article on Sunday and I think was just tossing names
around more than anything. I really cannot see the Avalnache parting
with Sakic or Forsberg regardless of the salary cap considerations.
Same goes for Pittsburgh especially with Mario retiring, Jagr is their
only drawing card.
FWIW - Forsberg is signed to a 4 year contract for something like
$17 million. If the B's wanted to give up the #1 pick for him
that would be fine by me. Sakic is a FA I beleive and would have to
be signed before a deal with him could be made. I think it was all
speculation but what the hell.

wrote.

Not being able to acquire a Forsberg, Sakic, or Jagr type player.
Is the primary reason, Harry Sinden should be canned. If other teams
can acquire Alexander Mogilny or Teemu Selanne type players, why can't
the B's?

| I was there sunday and it's hard to explain how cool it was during the
standing O for Mario, I didn't think it would ever stop. Boston fans do have a
lot of class, it was great thanking Mario for all he's done for the game of
hockey.
