2398.0. "Memory & Keyboard on VP" by PTOJJD::DANZAK (Pittsburgher ) Mon May 05 1997 14:53

    Two questions:

    WHICH memory (below) is for WHICH hi-note VP? It's not clear which is
    for the VP535 (I'm had it mis-orddered twice!)

        1   FR-PCP9M-AA  HINOTE VP 8MB MEMORY                    229.00
        2   FR-PCP9M-AB  HINOTE VP 16MB MEMORY                   399.00
        3   FR-PCP9M-AC  HINOTE VP 32MB MEMORY                 1,299.00
        4   FR-PCP9M-BA  Hint VP5H,8MB Memory Upgrd Kt           129.00

        5   FR-PCP9M-BB  Hint VP5H,16MB Memry Upgrd Kt           219.00
        6   FR-PCP9M-BC  Hint VP5H,32MB Memry Upgrd Kt           399.00
        7   FR-PCP9M-BD  64MB MEMORY FOR HINOTE VP5H             999.00

    WHat's the difference between the VP and VPH? It's not obvious looking
    at the order/model numbers which are which.

    Also, the keyboard on the machine seems to "go away" and "think" every
    so often, leaving me with missing characters. Is there a BIOS problem
    with it etc.?

    Thanks,
    j

VPH is the VP500 series, but don't order the 64MB memory for the VP535 as
it won't accept it.

See http://www.pc.digital.com/products/notebook/hinote_vp_500_mem_configs.asp
for memory configuration details.

... now I'm not so sure about the 64MB option for the VP535 - as the table
I referenced lists it as acceptable for the 545, which is similar.

: WHat's the difference between the VP and VPH? It's not obvious looking
: at the order/model numbers which are which.

   "VP" == "VP", and I suspect "VP5H" is "VP500" as in 5-Hundred.
   The low-end VP500 series is limited to 40 MB = 8 MB + 2 * 16 MB.
   To max-out the HiNote VP535, you want FR-PCP9M-BC.

: Also, the keyboard on the machine seems to "go away" and "think" every
: so often, leaving me with missing characters. Is there a BIOS problem
:    with it etc.?

   Look around, there have been some similar discussions...

2398.4Max Memory in VP535?GVA05::TARBAYMon May 26 1997 12:128
    Is it true that the VP535 cannot take run with 80 MB using the new
    32MB chips? This is a BIOS limit then?

    If so, instead of ordering the 80MB upgrade I may have to
    order another machine, 40 MB is marginal for large NT applications (Visual
    C++, VB) at the customer site.

    To LIONEL,

    Please send me a copy of the TABLE that said a VP545 could go to 80Mb..
    This is WRONG. The max for a VP510-545 is 40 MB. 8mb on MB and 32mb in
    sockets (must be put in in matching pairs)

    The Vp550-575 will take 80 MB (16mb on MB and 64mb in matching pairs in
    sockets)

    Newer products go up to 128mb and higher.... Getting scary on a
    'portable' with a 14" screen, who needs a desktop. I have a better
    machine in my portable.

    I will look into the keyboard 'going away' problem.. It apparently
    happens under a wide variety of circumstances..

http://www.windows.digital.com/products/notebook/hinote_vp_500_mem_configs.asp

This page used to be pointed to by pages describing the VP525-545, but those
models have disappeared. Still, this would be looked at by people wanting
to upgrade and there is no footnote.

   I've now noticed my HiNote has this problem, too. (I wasn't sure
   if it was the fault of my typing on the HiNote keyboard, or if it
   was a keyboard fault. I'm now sure.)

   I haven't decided if I'll live with it or if I'll send it in for
   the requisite keyboard update. (I'm also questioning whether or
   not I'll ever purchase another DIGITAL HiNote, but that's a normal
   customer reaction to receiving a product with this class of bug.)

2398.8Need serial number and BIOS infoPCBUOA::FERRANTEVWed May 28 1997 10:067
    Could you folks with 'slow keyboard' problems reply with the serial
    numbers, System BIOS rev and KB BIOS rev of your systems. The BIOS is
    displayed at boot time (warm or cold). I am also looking at other
    issues that may affect this problem. I believe that this is a small
    number of cases but need more information..
