2384.0. "Short battery life on HiNote VP 575?" by WHYNOW::NEWMAN (Protector of the Cause) Thu Apr 24 1997 18:49

Is there a problem with the battery on the HiNote VP 575?

I am running a HiNote VP575 that had a fully charged battery; at least
the LED display on the battery as well as the Windows95 battery
indicator said so. Windows95 also said that there was approximately
3.3 hours of battery life left.

After unplugging the unit from the AC adapter and running it on the
battery for about 30 minutes, it now indicates that there is only 45
minutes of battery life left. During these 30 minutes the system was
"idle" for the most part, just running the "3D Text" screen saver.

Ummm, obviously that screen saver isn't a CPU saver. Personally, I
find screen savers counter productive on a notebook on battery power.
    Use power management features. ;-)

Right -- a screen saver is a total waste of battery power on a
notebook (what do you think you are "saving"?) -- the 3D one will be
a heavy CPU user, and the CPU is a significant battery draw. You're
using a lot more battery power running it than when you're running
Word, because with Word the CPU can rest between keystrokes, and
with power management enabled, the CPU clock speed will be reduced
during idle time. With the 3D screen saver, you don't _give_ it any
idle time. Plus, the screen (especially with backlighting) is a big
power draw. The hard drive is actually one of the less heavy users
    of the battery.

Turn the screen saver to PLUS 1 MINUTE of what you have the CMOS
Standby timer set to. THis will allow the system to turn off the
backlight and save you at least 30 % of your battery life... Never
leave the PCMCIA cards in teh slots unless they are in use. THey draw a
lot of power when connected. One assumes that if you are tied down to a
LAN or phone line, you are also near a source of A/C power... Then
    again ASSUME spells ... . ..
