| I have a similar problem on a VP535. I upgraded it to W95 OSR2, which
for the most part went fine. But the ESS device keeps coming up as
not working or not having the drivers installed. I have gone through
several cycles of removing the device and reinstalling drivers - either
from the W95 CD or from the floppy with drivers, but the result is the
same.
Any help would be appreciated.

Some of these PCs will have the sound card auto-detected as something
else, the next step is that the incorrect driver is installed and
uses the resources needed for the correct driver; then the correct
driver will always fail to correctly configure.
Is this the case with your PC?

| No, it correctly selects (I think) "ESS ES1688 Plug and Play
AudioDrive". The error code is 10 (for whatever that's worth) and no
conflicts are reported.
(I also can't get the PCMCIA bridge to install properly - I've followed
the instructions in the "utility" diskette whose image was
preinstalled.)

| I managed to get it to work by deleting the ESS files from \windows\system and
reinstalling the driver.

| I had the same problem with the ESS 1688 driver on my VP535 after I installed
the new Win95 OSR2 kit.
Surprisingly I solved the problem by downgrading the sound driver to the old
one that comes factory installed with the VP535. That is replacing newer
drivers with old ones! Yes your heard it right!
On my disk in the Windows system directory are the files:
ES1688.drv 14-09-95
ESSFM.drv 24-08-96 (probably one of the new ones!)
ESSMPU.drv 14-09-95
ES1688.vxd 14-09-95
and it works !
See you around.

| Yes - I reinstalled from the floppy I created from the FIS'd version of W95.
