2301.0. "NT 4.0 Video drivers on HiNote CT475" by OHFSS1::TOKAR () Fri Feb 14 1997 11:49

    I have been running NT 4.0 Workstation for some time on my HiNote
    CT475. My problem is the video driver. The only driver I seem to be
    able to use is the standard VGA driver. I've tried the C&T driver and get
    the blue screen of death every time. I even went to C&T's web site,
    down loaded their latest and greatest - all to no avail.

    Just what drivers are one to use to get decent resolution?

    I'm running NT Workstation 4.0 build 1381.

    When the system crashes using the C&T drivers I get:

    	kmode_exception_not_handled
    	cpu id genuine intel 4.8.0
    	irql:1f
    	sysver 0xf0000565
   	and the expected dump

    The C&T drivers report the chip type as 65540.

    I believe the bios level of the pc is 1.41.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Video works differently on NT 4.0 than on NT 3.5x so until you get a
    driver specifically written for 4.0, there is little hope for getting
    it to work.

    Did C&T's web site actually have a 4.0 driver that didn't work or did
    you merely try the latest 3.5x driver that they had?

    Have you tried the CHIPS.SYS driver from the DRVLIB\VIDEO\X86\CHIPS
    directory on the NT 4.0 CD? I haven't used these myself, but I presume
    they were included for some reason.

2301.2standard 4.0 drivers brokeOHFSS1::TOKARMon Feb 17 1997 11:2720

    I have tried both drivers.

    I tried the C&T driver found on my NT 4.0 CD. It died.

    I got the latest and greatest NT 4.0 driver off C&T's web site -
    and it died as well.

    When I checked into C&T's support, they point you to the manufacturer.

    So to answer your questions: I used the 4.0 drivers, they do not work.

    My question: When will we have a driver out? I don't want to
    downgrade to 3.51 or (God forbid) Windows 95.

2301.4better but...OHFSS1::TOKARMon Feb 17 1997 18:4915

    Judy,

    	Good job.

    	I am now up to 65K colors, but still can only manage
    640x480 screen resolution. Are you using an external monitor or the
    standard screen? Since I only have 1MB of video ram, perhaps that is
    the limitation.

    	I've seen some of the folks running Windows 95 and the resolution
    is much crisper.

b.t.

	i'm glad to hear it worked for you. i'm using the standard
	screen and only get 640x480 with anything over 256 colors.

	if you find a solution, please post it or let me know.

    I think it will be up to engineering to write the proper driver for the
    system.

2301.7C&T from NT works for the most partMSE1::mse_chenis.mse.tay.dec.com::chenisKenneth ChenisTue Feb 18 1997 15:0922
The c&t	driver included in NT 4.0 works fine with the
exception that you can't do a soft reboot if you have
24MB of memory (don't ask me why, I posted this as an
issue and informed the PCBU about it, but never got a
fix)

I have NT4 - Stock C&T Driver (on NT4 CDrom) - and 256
color up to 1024x768, and 16M color at 640x480.

Just don't reboot - you get the crash indicated in the
base note because the system starts up seeing the 1MB
of video memory as valid memory, and seems to report
25MB available to the system (as opposed to 24).

The real fun part is if you do this when running FAT as
opposed to NTFS - the root partition gets crushed, and
you end up with the "missing operating system" message.

Hope this helps (at least a little).

2301.8Seems to be the mouse that's the probNETRIX::"[email protected]"Tue Feb 25 1997 09:046
I have tried the drivers from the C&T site and had similar problems. The mouse
seems to be the problem. The system will quite happily stay up until you touch
the mouse - then blue screen and the unhandled exception.

    Looks like you need to get the keyboard fixed as well.
2301.11NT V4.0 Drivers work fine but don't Soft RebootNETRIX::"[email protected]"Eric DubeWed Mar 26 1997 13:3733
The problem with the soft reboot on a HiNote Ultra
CT475 (ONLY) WITH 24mb existed way back in NT V3.51 when
using the C&T video drivers.

I complained about it then, but some people from
the PCBU told me I was on glue.

So, its no surprise that when I got NT V4.0 installed
with the C&T video drivers it did the same thing of
totalling the video memory with the system memory.
(i.e. 25 Meg)

I actually think its a problem either with the design
of the system or the BIOS. I highly doubt its the driver
as the one from the NT V4.0 CDROM AND the one directly from
C&T cause the same results never mind the fact that it
happened in a completely different version of NT.
(But both drivers do work just fine with NT on the Ultra!)

The problem mentioned earlier in the thread about NT V4.0
crashing all the time I found happens only for some reason
on the HiNote Ultra CT475's. I haven't been able to track
it down (dumpexam.exe), but its frequent enough to be annoying
so much in fact that I dumped it and now run Windows 97 beta.
I have noticed it to be somewhat linked to the mouse, but I
don't necessarily believe that's the cause of the problem as
it also crashes when the mouse is not used. (Go figure!)

Good luck,
Eric Dube
