2262.6Bad floppy or connection. Return for repair/replacePCBUOA::FERRANTEVMon Jan 27 1997 09:5410
The floppy sets were made and tested for all languages. The system
DOES make all appropriate floppies. (They are also used to rebuid a
system from scratch just to prove viability.
If you have a system with a bad floppy (drive or system connection)
call IEG and get it replaced or repaired. You only have 30 days if
memory serves me correctly. We do not do 100% inspection on all systems
so it is possible to get one with a problem. That's why they are
    guaranteed.

The problem is that I have a hard time proving that the hardware is defective.
The "Make application diskettes" application doesn't work, but running
DISKIMAG from a command prompt does (mostly). I copied all the files to
a different system - I couldn't get the "Make application diskettes" app to
run (it kept telling me it couldn't find a file, but I don't know what it was
looking for - I had copied the entire Digital directory), and DISKIMAG failed
on the same .IMG files there as it did on the HiNote.

A customer who also has a VP experiences the same problem.
I have been trying to replicate the problem myself in a VP that I have here.
The first time I tried it, I got the same error messages as 2262.0, I kept
trying it and trying it but couldn't see what the problem was. The odd
thing is that it would only happen with certain applications. When
I tried to make the system diskettes of Laplink I would bet an error. When
I tried the ESS drivers, it had no problems. Then after
some time I began testing again, only this time I didn't get the problem at
all.
I could make any system diskettes without getting the errror. THe only thing
I recall was different was that I was using teh AC adaptor instead of the
battery.
I asked the customer to remove the battery and try it using his AC adaptor.
He still has the problem, so it wasn't that. When I was testing and got the
errors
I looked in Windows Explorer to see how teh files in the diskettes looked
like.
They looked completely corrupted, the file names were not proper. When I
tried to
format the disk, it would not let me doa quick format, after a full format, I
tried
again and after the problem I checked the files, corrupt again. It seems to
me that
when the system diskettes are made, it formats the diskettes, and somehow it
does it
wrong, hence the disk error. I have recently tried using a MAC formatted
diskette
to see if an unknown disk format would replicate the problem, it doesn't. The
utility
formats the disk and copies the files. I have asked the customer to attempt
it
after loading Win95 in Safe Mode, no reply yet. HAs anybody got more
information on this?

    Hi Petri,

The results from your Mac formatted experiment are interesting.
Perhaps the problem here is floppy drive head alignment differences.
Try forcing a reformat of problem diskettes, either by prior
reformatting on the portable in question, or by erasing the diskettes
with a bulk eraser if available.

    Cheers,

I have problems reading some floppies on my VP535. The error
is "error reading file xxxxx" or something to that effect.

I take the same floppy over to my desk top and read it without any
    problems.
