2257.9 | If you only have a floppy drive how do you use a CD-ROm | PCBUOA::FERRANTEV | | Mon Jan 27 1997 09:49 | 9 |
| The last round of DEC portables were delivered with Make Diskettes
because not all systems had a CD-ROM drive as standard equipment.
FYI - for all new DEC portable systems, since all contain a CD-ROM with
the system, the software will be distributed on CD-ROM.

| But most of the models do have a CD-ROM. Is it any big deal to pack the
CD-ROM in with the systems that have it?

2257.11 | MS won't allow it. | PCBUOA::FERRANTEV | | Mon Jan 27 1997 10:18 | 12 |
| Microsoft does not allow the use of 2 methods of delivering software to
say the least about testing out 2 differrent media formats for the FIS
for all 14 languages adn tehn the multi-lingual sets. This would have
added 2 more months to releasing the product.
As I said, ALL new protables are to be released with CD-ROM
distribution for software and application add-ons.
You should be happy now, I know I am much happier that we finally will
ship CD-ROMs.

(If it's not giving away the store) -- Does this mean there will be
no more Ultra-class machines, or that the next generation of Ultras
will have an external CD-ROM drive as standard equipment?
Don't abandon the light-weight line. Having had a Portege and an
Ultra I, I can't imagine resigning myself to a 6+ pound behemoth
just to get better screen resolution (the 640x480 on my current
machine is getting a bit tiring, and besides, the ashtray is full).

| Sorry, we may not answer your question. To do so would "give away the
store".
