    The failure is really in the modem not in the laptop. ALL (only one I
    know of) use the default system volume at full tilt to pass their dial
    string to. In the case of the HiNote VP series , this is a loud
    setting. I have raised the issues with Xircom and Megahertz and they
    agree it is a failing on their part to pass the signal to the correct
    input. They are 'working' on it for future products.
    
    To lower the 'system' volume would mean that system sounds, Beep, etc.,
    would not be heard clearly. We did lower the volume on the VP500 and
    changed the tone of the BEEP to make it a little more friendly but YES
    it is quite loud when dialing a modem.
    
    Sorry 'bout that folks but maybe in the next generation..
