Hi,
a customer of us has problems doing a wildcard directory command over FTAM from
a HP UX system to a VAX running DECnet/OSI V6.3 ECO #6 and FTAM V3.2-L.
FTAM didn't send any information about the files in the directory back to the
initiator. Trying an local FTAM access with the same user didn't show any
errors.
Looking at both FTAM Traces I saw that the f-open-request is somewhat different
between the VAX and the HP-UX

| That's a pertfectly acceptable way to open a file (with contents type unknown);
the responder is supposed to tell you in the f-open-response what the file type
is, and in fact in this case we did tell them it was an NBS-9 file.
However, HP *must* tell us in the f-open-request what file attributes they want,
and those attributes are encoded in the Contents Type Attributes as the
Parameters field. Since HP didn't tell us what information they wanted, we
returned no information on the 12 files in that directory. So, HP really needs
to encode a contents type attribute and explicitly request an NBS-9 file along
with a Parameters indicating what information they want returned.

the customer gets the following answer back form HP concerning the
'f-open-request' problem:
1) they say that we can set the content-type as "unknown", but that in this
case we must encode the "Contents-Type-Attribute" field to indicate which
file attributes we want. That seems strange because the content_type field
of the F_OPEN_REQUEST PDU is a CHOICE between "unknown" and "proposed".
2) in the FTAM standards, 8571-3 section 17.1.2.4 page 32, it is said
that "the parameters may be present or they may be omitted if they are
unknown".

| Right - under normal circumstances; however, NBS-9 was a hack implemented by
NIST so it's anything but normal. If they would take a look at the NBS-9 doc
type in the NIST Stable Implementation Agreements, they would find: (this is on
page 9-57 in my copy which is fairly old, I don't know what the current page is,
but I think the NIST SIA is also on the web if they don't have a copy)

|The parameter of the document type is used on <F-OPEN-REQUEST> to specify the
|desired attributes of each of the files in the filestore, when reading the
|document.
Then, if they would refer themselves to Table 9.13 they would find where the
parameter syntax for the NBS-9 doc type was defined.
In this case, since HP didn't ask for any specific information, when they did
the read on the file, we returned the fact that there were 12 files in the
directory (if you look at the data we sent back, you'll see this); but no file
information was returned with any of those files.
It seems silly to keep the customer in the middle of this. If HP doesn't accept
this, or doesn't know how to read, then you can offer that HP can contact me
