199.0. "DOOMing on Win95" by ESB02::TATOSIAN (The Compleat Tangler) Wed Sep 20 1995 16:46

OK - someone save me some time and tell me how to setup for DOOM in a
    Win95 DOS box.

I want to see what happens to multi-whatevering with DOOM cranking
    under Win95...

> OK - someone save me some time and tell me how to setup for DOOM in a
> Win95 DOS box.

Works for me the easy way:

    Explorer -> find the doom.exe

Right button drag doom.exe to desktop -> create shortcut.

Open properties of the doom shortcut, set it to full-screen.

    Double-click doom shortcut. Frag away!

As for affecting system performance, if you alt-tab out of doom back to the
desktop or any other app., I *think* it pauses the Doom DOS box, since I
didn't notice any affect on other applications when Doom wasn't the "active
window." I did however notice that other things can affect the doom process
... noticeable pauses during disk accesses, etc.

Still, a very playable setup under Win95!

I have yet to test ifrag (or whatever the multiplayer IP driver is called).

Anyone try IPX-Doom under Win95 yet?

Arf! My fault - I've already done that part (shortcut et al). I
should've mentioned that what I needed to know is how to set up the
appropriate file (whatever it is) to get my dos mouse driver loaded (it
isn't) and what trick needs to be played to get the sound there (for
some reason, my SB16 is mute when launching DOOM from the desktop).

I've since discovered that - at least for the midi music - I needed to
chang the mixer settings (I had them too low using the Win95 mixer
panel). SO I can get music just fine. No sound effects though - yet.

Haven't found how to load a DOS mouse driver though (I don't load one
usually). I tried using a .bat file as defined in the properties
screen, or loading it from hand once I'm in a DOS box, but Win95
bitches "Driver cannot be loaded from within Windows. Exit Windows and
try again." Does this mean I *have* to load a mouse driver in my Win95
autoexec.bat file before the shell is started?

Admittedly I haven't spent much time on this - I figgered I'd look in
here and find a recipe for it already (no such luck)...

Is it possible to run DOOM 2 in a dos-box (ie not full screen mode) ?

Heretic runs fine like that but DOOM 2 gets paused.

> Anyone try IPX-Doom under Win95 yet?

Yep, works just fine. I recently managed to borrow 3 16MB Venturis P75s
all running Windows 95. I networked them with my LPX466 as a fund raiser at
the local school. Certainly not a commercial proposition, but a lot of
fun. Due to some concerns about violence, we spent most of the time running
DESCENT (no blood so it was OK :-). We'd checked out Doom V1.2, V1.666 and
Heretic. Naturally, it was necessary to thoroughly check that everything
worked (took several hours :-) and we also had to make sure that none of the
machines were damaged afterwards (which took all of the Sunday following the
demo :-) Of the 3, I must say I think Heretic is the most fun. We snuck in
a Heretic session during the fundraiser. The kids thought it was a riot,
spending most of their time searching for "the egg of chickenality" (their
term) and blowing each other into chickens.

One thing I could NOT get working was the DM program which comes with
Heretic. Always fails with "error in execv" or similar error.

There shouldn't be any need to do anything special about sound or mouse
drivers - that's the whole point of Windows 95. Indeed, if your AUTOEXEC
and CONFIG have any mouse or sound stuff in them, TAKE THEM OUT! as they
will prevent you from using the faster, protected mode drivers.

One thing you may want to do is disable the screen saver (somewhere in
the shortcut properties menu). If you're a but fumble fingered, you may
also want to disable ALT RETURN so you don't accidently iconify your DOOM
session. You may suffer a slight degradation in performance (see note 124
  for some numbers).

199.5No DOS driver = No Mouse in DOOMed DOS-box for meESB02::TATOSIANThe Compleat TanglerSun Sep 24 1995 11:477
Hmmm...the statement about removing mouse drivers from the win95
autoexec.bat doesn't work for me - the only way I *could* get a mouse
in a DOOMed DOS-box was to add back the MS mouse driver from my old DOS
directory (which fixed the last of my questions from the beginning of
    this thread).

199.6Last Real Mode Driver Bites the Ether!ESB02::TATOSIANThe Compleat TanglerSat Oct 07 1995 02:1222
Well, DUH! I finally got off my *ss and figured out why my wee mouse
    wouldn't work in DOOM under Win95 unless I had a real-mode driver
installed: it had been detected as a "Mouse Systems" mouse, and the
driver that Win95 installs for that apparently isn't as functional as
the Microsoft Serial Mouse drivers are.

Gee - you don't think that maybe MS is trying to persuade me to buy
    one of *their* mice, eh?

So I used Control Panel to change to the MS Serial Mouse driver,
restarted Win95, and voila! My mouse functions everywhere, in
    everything, including DOS boxes...

Of course, as it really *isn't* an MS Mouse (their mouse gives me
instant muscle cramps in my hand - it's just too friggin BIG!) there's a
nice yellow ! in Control Panel - Mouse (the only yellow ! on my system)
complaining that perhaps not everything is hunky-dory. But I can't find
anything that doesn't work at least as well as it did with the other
driver, and I can live with Control Panel's grumblings (it's cheaper
than a $50 mouse that gives me a pain in the hand)...

    /dave (Not a real-mode driver in sight!)
199.7Doom under DOSCHEFS::HARRISONMon Mar 04 1996 10:5512
    Hi,

I've got my DECpc LPX433sx office PC setup running Windows '95 on the
LAN using IPX & TCP/IP & doom v1.9. I've configured two Apple Macintosh
PC's with IPX supplied with Doom2. My group have an enjoyable deatmatch
most lunchtimes. I fire up Doom on the PC from Win95.

It would be nice to work out how to setup an icon for Doom on the
desktop that reboots the PC into Dos mode & starts the IPX network so I
can play without the windows overhead.

Anybody got any idea how to do this?
199.8Win95 shortcutGIDDAY::GILLINGSa crucible of informative mistakesMon Mar 04 1996 22:3621
  re .7:
Shouldn't be a problem (though, I don't know if the reboot every time is
worth the effort!). I'll try and describe how to do this, but please note
I don't have a PC here in the office, and I've never actually done this.

create a shortcut - Explorer File->New-> Shortcut, make it for DOOM
Place the shortcut whereever you like
Hunt around the archives for a cool "Doom" icon, they're there somewhere
Select the shortcut and go to "properties"
Somewhere in there is a "Run in DOS mode" button

Potential problems - Since you're running "naked" DOS, you probably won't
get a network. You may need to customise a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for
the application. That's also somewhere in the properties of the shortcut.

Somewhere in here I posted some numbers which quantified the "windows
overhead". It's real, but if it makes sufficient difference to warrent
a reboot each time you enter and exit the application, I'd suggest you
  should get a faster system.

199.9Shortcut DOS commandsCHEFS::HARRISONTue Mar 05 1996 06:1517
I can work out how to set the desktop Doom icon shortcut & have set the
properties to reboot in DOS mode. It works fine. However when I added
net start in autoexec.bat under the advanced setup & tried a network
game the ethernet card is initialized successfully when the system boots in
DOS but says IPX not detected. I also do not have any mouse control when
rebooted. If I do a standard reboot in DOS mode the system picks up the
mouse directory with lmouse.ini file & finds the mouse ok.

Q What do I need to do to add mouse support in DOS mode using the
    shortcut?

Q Anyone know the commands I need to add to autoexec.bat to start the
    IPS protocol?

    Thanks

    RE mouse

You need the dos mouse driver, either mouse.com or mouse.sys loaded
    from autoexec or config.sys

RE DOS IPX drivers (this is from memory, so it may be wrong!)

Get the driver diskette for the ethernet card, then find the odi
drivers, and load lsl.com, ipxodi.com and the ODI Ethernet driver.

hi,

I'm trying to run DOOM (shareware) from the Win 95 desktop. It runs, but I
soon lose sound and sometimes it crashes.

Are there specific settings to use that will keep sound and keep going. I
don't use the mouse.

I'm using a Hinote Ultra.

Stuart

Hmmm. I DOOM on an 8Mb HiNote Ultra with Win95 with the default
ESS audio driver and joystick without any problem. Incidentally,
the same joystick (Flightstick) doesn't work on my desktop systems
under Win95 when hung off a PAS16 or Soundblaster.
