| Thanks for the quick reply,
I gather from what you say a Netware SERVER is not required, just the
IP/ODI drivers, correct? Is there a version that MUST USE a Novell
server do you know?
With a simple LAN config such as yours, how many players can you have,
is it four or more?
And would I be correct in saying DOOM doesn't run as a Windows
application, i.e. you need to exit windows to run it?
I found the FAQ but it is HUGE! though I did get some answers.
The customer will have 90Mhz 24Mb Pentiums on Ethernet, that will also
be used for Netscape etc on the Internet. I believe they will have to
have a dual boot option, one for WfW and TCP/IP, Netscape etc, and one
for IPX/ODI+DOOM. DOes that seem reasonable, as I don't think two
network stacks would co-exist when running DOOM?
Thanks for the input

| Firstly, no, DOOM does not need a 'server'. Each machine runs the
software is a more 'peer-to-peer' style configuration. In your setup,
the Alpha server would be redundant when it came to DOOM network games
- the PC's would just talk to each other.

Correct. Usual case would be loading your network card's driver, then
LSL and then finally IPXODI. This is the easiest way to get a network
game going as it does not require a 'server'.

No matter how many PC's are linked, only 4 players can be in one game
at one time. However on a single network you can have more than 1 game
running, by using different 'ports' for the network. So 8 computers
linked up could run 2 games of 4 players each, or 4 games of two
players, and so on...

Correct. This is your best bet.

Sounds reasonable, yes. Best that DOOM has its own configuration (which
DOS 6.xx allows easily). As for the latter question, I don't know -
maybe a techie can answer that.
As for running DOOM over TCP/IP it *is* possibly, by using a utility
called IFRAG. Now *THIS* requires a server machine (probably what your
friend was referring to).
Do a DIR /TIT=IFRAG - it's been talked about in here already.
CHeers, and good luck,
