168.0. "PCDOOM WWW Site Discussion" by KERNEL::BROWNM (DRAC) Fri Feb 24 1995 05:18

I thought that as Dan & I are going to be putting together a Digital
DOOM www site for this notes conference perhaps we should find out what
    the conference wants.

SO..... this note is for people to discuss suggestions of what to
include, how to set the pages out.

    Here's an idea,

people who use this conference if they want may link their home pages
to the www pages we're writing.

Maybe the link could go from the performance league.

I'm sure Dan wouldn't mind storing the pages on his server - as long as
    they're not too big.

Will this be an internal WWW, ie when I connect to to it will I be doing
so from the internet where I browse normally using Netscape or will it
be visible only within the confines of the easynet.

Only asking 'cos I was wondering how you would do a pointer to an ftp site

    I severly doubt you'll get in :-)
168.11KERNEL::BROWNMDRACFri Feb 24 1995 09:5617
It is running on a machine inside the firewall, so it will not be
accessible for the big wide internet, but if users have the correct
proxy servers defined in their WWW browser (e.g. mosaic netscape) then
you can access external ftp sites. This is because "our" page will
just point your browser to the external page then your browser works
    out how to get there.

The reason I posted the "design" is so that you could see what we are
planning and can give us some ideas, rather than point you at a page
that is severely under construction and being tested as we speak for
    certain things.

The more detailed "under construction" page will appear Monday morning
(assuming that I can get some time to work on it at the weekend).

Seriously though- this web page is going to be for the conference so
any input, ideas, graphics that you want we can do it. If you don't
like something we can change it. For the moment though the pages are
going to be under construction for at least a week. I plan to put
together a non-graphical frame-work over hte weekend, so that things
are avaiable to see on Monday.

I already use Netscape alot at home, but...

It uses Winsock, my Winsock is the Trumpet one by Peter Tattam. It is
used to Dialing into an internet service provider (Demon in my case).

Netscape does not link directly to your WWW page directly. Whats in
between? Do you have winsock talking over DECNET ? How do I get
Netscape on my pathworked PC to connect to your WWW????

Are you talking about your PC at home?
168.27KERNEL::BROWNMDRACMon Feb 27 1995 08:1715
If you have a pc at work is it connected to the Digital Network?

If so what do you use as your network software?

To access the WWW from Digital you need 2 things, a network connection
to the Digital network, and TCP/IP running on your PC.

If you meet these requirements, you just need either mosaic or netscape
installed on your pc with a proxy server setup - you can find a proxy
server by looking in internet_tools conference, the full pointer to
this conf is a few notes back.

If you do not meet these requirements let me known what you do have (ie
either tcp/ip or a network connection) and I'll try and go thru what
    you need to do.

If you have PATHWORKS v4 DECnet on your PC, add trumpet
If you have PATHWORKS v5 just add TCP/IP
168.29KERNEL::BROWNMDRACMon Feb 27 1995 08:394
The problem with just adding trumpet is that it needs to be configured
with a Digital TCP/IP address, sticking any old address will fail
abysmally. So if you havem't already got a TCP/IP address you will
need to get one form your local Computer people.

According to the Windows Setup dialog box I'm running DEC PATHWORKS
V4.1 or higher. In the control panel it shows that i'm running a DECnet
    Driver V4.1.8 so i guess I'm not running tcp/ip.

So, it looks like i just need to add Trumpet. Then Netscape.

Dan, I'm running Netscape and Trumpet (for winsock) at home, it's a
great combination - it's amazing just how far 'round the world you can

I've a tcp/ip address on the way - but's for ACB use. Can it be used

    paul
168.35KERNEL::BROWNMDRACMon Feb 27 1995 10:1213
If ACb is an external Internet providor, then no, you need a Digital
TCP/IP address, you should be able to contact your local network
administrators and apply for one, then it's just a case of setting up
either Trumpet with your Digital TCP/IP address and away you go.
Alternatively you could upgrade to PATHWORKS 5 (either 5.0a or 5.1) and
that includes a TCP/IP stack that you can install.

Either way you will need to know things like gateways, name servers and
for Netscape proxy servers. You can get gateway and name server info
from your local network support people and proxy servers I can copy
    from internet_tools

ACB is not an internet service provider, it's Digitals ACB (Automatic

I'll chuck Trumpet on the PC here at work and see if I can get that
working. If not - bugger it - it's not worth the hassle. I'll stick to

168.38KERNEL::BROWNMDRACMon Feb 27 1995 10:467
Not really knowing anything about acb I wouldn't guarantee this, but I
would have thought that the ip address you use will be ok to use on
your PC at work. All you need to do is run trumpet without using a
dialing script and that will load a tcp/ip stack onto your PC and away
    you should go.

Well The PCDOOM WWW pages are much better now, all the links link to
something, other than just under construction, many link to actual
files you can copy using your browser. There are also links to
external doom servers, and a link to a hypertext version of the DOOM
    FAQ.

The site will not change much in the next few days, but over the next

That's what i envisage the main use for it. With FLYTE, before you

A small warning, if you are trying to grab files from the www pages,
and the files are either .wad or .lmp (basically anything that isn't a
standard .zip or .exe, the browser will load it as an html/text file.

This is going to be fixed asap (probably tomorrow now).

Slight addendum, some browsers may be ok, but netscape for osf doesn't
seem to like files .lmp and .wad :-(

    Mark,

How about adding some access info, like:

This page has been accessed x times, with y access' yesterday.

Talk to Dan as well, but it's something for the future. I haven't got
time to get my head around the unix scripting to do it, perhaps Dan has
    the time?

Well, finally got in and it looks good - not quite what I expected but
the layout all looks clean and neat. Couldn't get the links to other
Doom locations to work but I think that was my fault for not having set
    up a proxy in Netscape.

I was able to access it in the end using Netscape on the PC at home
connected via Winsock using PPP over a modem to Digital. Speed is pretty
    good too.

I wrote a similar reply to this using the notes interface in it (clever
stuff by the way) but when I came into work this morning it doesn't
appear to have have made it into the conference so i'm writing this one
using the traditional method at work.

read the internet_tools confernence, pointer somewhere in this thread.

you basically need a graphics terminal (PC, X terminal, workstation)
    and a TCP/IP address
168.61Public WWW AccessKERNEL::BROWNMDRACWed Mar 08 1995 13:5821
for all of the internet disadvantaged I have created an account
(accessable via telnet or lat only I am afraid, our networks have been
seperated from passing DECnet between our lans and the outside world).

the server is greebo.uvo.dec.com so telnet greebo.uvo or set host/lat
    greebo.

    Username:lynx

For the time being I will ask you to e-mail me for the password, and
please don't go around telling everyone the password.

To apply for the password e-mail comics::brownm with subject of LYNX

e-mails to any other account will not be replied to.

Once you login you will be taken straight into LYNX a terminal based
WWW reader. It will not show graphics, but does everything else.
