167.0. "PWAD vs. WAD files" by ODIXIE::GUGLIELMO () Fri Feb 17 1995 08:32

Could somebody give some help to a novice DOOMER? (DOOMII)

What's the difference between the regular WAD files and the
PWAD files. I know how to use/start a regular *.WAD file, but
how can I use a PWAD file?

    Thanks

    They're the same thing.

    Some terminology :-

    IWAD (Internal Wad)
The original wad. Very big. Holds details on EVERYTHING (the
graphics, the level layouts, the sounds, and so on...)

    PWAD (Patch Wad)
A wad file which can be 'overlayed' over DOOM's existing, internal
wad. This will just replace specific parts (ie. levels, sprites,
sounds, pictures, etc) and leave others unchanged if desired.

    WAD
This is just a general term - it could mean either of the
above though, in normal chit-chat, it usually refers to a PWAD.

    Does this help?

    Cheers,
    Dan

Related to WAD files, I downloaded some from Cserve recently. Some
came in .ZIP format and some were in .000 file extentions. What do I
    do with the .000 files?

    Thanks,
    Litz

The .000 files might just be index files - try TYPEing them and seeing
if they're just a text file. Failing that, I can only guess they're
maybe some UUENCODED files or something... you'll need a UUDECODE
utility to decode them. But I'd imagine they're more the former ;-)

Or they are multiple zip files maybe?

If so, why the .000 extension? You mean, one for each floppy disc?
Hmmm.... maybe. But normally the naming scheme goes more like
    ZIPFILE1.ZIP, ZIPFILE2.ZIP, etc for multiple floppy-disc files.

    Sounds like they're ARJ files...

    Cheers, Laurie.
