166.0. "Commercial WAD Package" by MSGAXP::MCCULLER () Sat Feb 11 1995 09:08

Mod, move this if discussed elsewhere in the ocnference...

I saw a CDROM package in the store yesterday for a DOOM I &
DOOM ][ WAD package. Says it requires registered version of either
game, and will provide up to 900 new levels of play. Random
generation of object displacement within levels, etc. Cost
about $20 US for the CDROM kit. Since I haven't browsed this
conference in a while (been focusing on Heretic recently), I
just assumed this was well discussed here in this conference.
    Don't see anything though...

    Anyone using this kit?

This is one of those things that annoys me.

This CD is nothing new. Lots of rip-off merchants are making them. They
take all the WADs and Utilities that are on the 'net, stick them on a
CD, and charge people for stuff which is shareware. Even considering
they are allowed to charge for distribution costs, I hate to see people
wasting their money of stuff which is ideally free. Then again, since
not everyone has access to the 'net, the CD is the ideal way to go.

Basically, this CD will probably contain the same sort of thing that's
on FLYTE. ie: If you want to save money, and don't mind swapping discs
( :-] ), you could probably get most of the stuff on this CD of FLYTE
and, failing that, it would most definately be up on the 'net somewhere
    (most likely ftp.orst.edu)

    There you go.

    Cheers,
    Dan

I used to agree. When I reached over 300 3.5" floppies, I changed my mind (and
that was before Doom came along).

I have never had a CD go bad, I have (almost) lost data on floppies.

The cost factor counts too. I picked up the PC-ZONE CD-ROM with "500 DOOM levels
+ utilities" (about 300 WADs). I worked out at the time that I would need about
350 floppies to store all that data. (I'm not sure I'd want it all but until I
check each level, who knows... and maybe I'll change my mind in 6 months time.
The only way to be sure is to get it all). So for 4 quid I can store as much
data as would have taken me over 150 quid otherwise (at 50p per floppy).

Don't forget also that downloading from the net is essentially free (to you, at
least) within Digital. If you had to fire up your modem and go via Demon to get
to this stuff I bet you would pick up a lot less. 10 (or 20) pounds won't buy
you a that much of download even at 28kbps at cheap rate (even if you were
willing to invest the time). (At 10p for 3 minutes I make that about 100MB tops,
assuming you could constantly stream data and no protocol overhead.
Realistically I guess you would be lucky to get 1/4 of that).

I completely agree. The CD idea is great for those of us who don't want
to keep all this stuff on floppies our our hard drive (can you believe
    a recent clear-out of my C:\GAMES\DOOM\WADS directory releived(sp?) 30
    Mbytes?!).

The magazine CD's are a great deal. Go for these. As for those on sale
in, say, Virgin Megastore, I stay away from them on principal. 10 I'm
sure is not just 'covering expenses'.

    Cheers,
    Dan

P.S. I wonder how much stuff is on FLYTE?! I'm off to have a look ....
    hold on :-)

    192.7 megabytes

Pfaa, nothing. We could stick that on a CD-ROM 3 times over :-]

Know anybody with CD-R equipment ...?

Or perhaps you should wait until it gets a little nearer the 600MB mark
    ... at 10 or 15 quid a shot for a blank, I don't want to waste any
    space :-)
