164.1 | Oops, I mean 'Dan'..... :-) | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Tue Jan 31 1995 11:57 | 18 |
| I think maybe you'r a little confused :
i)
Using RAMDRIVE to cache disk operations while running Doom normally,
there is little or no advantage or speed increase. Sometimes it can
slow Doom down. Doom and Doom 2 do there own cacheing of data. There is
no need to load RAMDRIVE.
ii)
Using a big RAMDRIVE (ie.16 Megabytes) and copying the whole of Doom to
it, and running the whole game from a very large RAMDRIVE, is veerrryy
quick (supposedly) !! You just need the memory to do it (Doom 1, it can
be done with 16 meg of RAM, Doom 2 requires 20 Meg of ram).
Hope this clears things up.
Cheers,
Dam

164.2 | Put the $ in a 486 | GIAMEM::WELLINS | | Tue Jan 31 1995 13:18 | 15 |
| Dan (caught your header in time),
Thanks......that does clear things up. I sorta figured you needed as
much ram memory to equal the total Doom or Doom ][ file space. That
leaves me out. No way am I going to spend that kind of money on a 386.
I'll wait til I upgrade.
If Doom does it's own cache disk operations, would I be better off not
invoking smartdrive in my autoexec.bat? I run a very slim set of
system files, in order to obtain the most amount of conventional
memory. But I think I left the smartdrive line in.
Thanks again,
Ian

164.3 | Can you say Pentium 100mhz? | BSS::PETTORINO | | Tue Jan 31 1995 20:04 | 16 |
| re .3
I kinda do the same thing on my PackardBell 833DX (8 megs). Not using
smartdrive gives you a small jump in performance, but not overly
noticeable.
In actuality, what I'm doing is using my FalconGold CD boot disk,
whixh runs an almost naked startup, since Falcon needs 603k of
conventional memory (when will they learn? groan). It makes it just
quick enough to keep me from playing WOLF3d for the umpteenth time
instead.
If you fighhure out a better way, drop me a note, wouldya? Thanx!

164.4 | Quickest way | BAHTAT::HILTON | Beer...now there's a temporary solution | Wed Feb 01 1995 04:16 | 4 |
| The quickest way to run Doom is to load nothing! Just hit F5 when you
see 'Starting MS-DOS....' if you have DOS 6 upwards.

Drop $139 on a Cyrix 25/50 upgrade and run it on your 33 Meg machine.
Works for me (so far)..makes DoomII mostly playable with 6 meg.
Your milage may vary.

| Gee has it been this long since I've looked at this note.!!
Anyway, I think I may have been the guy who started the
Ramdrive stuff...
and after all these months of running DOOM off the ramdrive,
I contend....
If you got the RAM- THERE'S SIMPLY NO BETTER WAY!
Infact,,, here's a kick! I've got a 466 w/24 meg, and I create
a RAMDrIVE on that guy, big enough to support the game files,
then with a serial-link between my pentium and the 466 with
nultiplayer,,,, it's quite cool! All my doom Buds just luv
coming over with a few brewski's and firing up the 'lab...
Awesome!

| 'Cos I'm lazy and can't be bothered to RTFM one more time, how 'bout
showing us your Config and Auto files so we can pull out the relevant
bits. ='}
I used to run FS5 from a RAMDRIVE (real smooth) but last time I tried it
with DOOM had no joy.
