| Two things:-
i) I presume this network does work (ie. for example, Windows for
Workgroups is okay)
ii) Have you tried it though the standard menu system of SETUP?
Sometimes I found this worked when IPXSETUP didn't. Try it.
Cheers,
Dan

Very, very very BIG QUESTIONS !!!??!!!!??.

| 1. Ahhh. So we have no proof that this network necessarily works?
Lantastic? Novell Netware? etc..
2. Right.
3. Copy the shareware version of Heretic from FLYTE::, un-zip it, and
there is DM.
4. No. Peer to peer networking is more like what Doom uses.
5. Your card will no doubt have lots of jumpers for base addresses,
IRQs, etc. but Doom is not fussy which are used - more like your
network drivers won't initialise if the settings aren't correct.
However, you say LSL, IPXODI, etc.. all load okay? Then there
should not be a problem.
Hmmmmm.... it would be better to find out if this network works at
all, before we start getting onto Doom side of things....... :-)
Cheers,
Dan

I didn't think you could TP directly between two stations? I thought
there had to be a hub in between...

161.7 | You can get there from here. | TROOA::BARTLETT | The truth is out there. | Fri Jan 20 1995 16:00 | 10 |

You can do UTP direct between two NICs _but_ it has to be a cross-over
type cable that swaps the TX and RX pairs. This is _not_ the standard
cable configuration, which is pin-to-pin.
What is .0's source of network drivers etc.?

Jason...

re: .6
yep, i had to build a tp xover cable to do it, eventually went out and
got a hub. i just basically had two normal cables, and a small rj45
extension thing (female plug on each side). broke it in half, rewired
the inside, and viola... xover module. when i bought the hub, i just
pulled that out and plugged the cables into the hub.

| HELLO,
OUAHHH, it works fine now because i have a HUB, BN24 cable and BN26
cables.
BN24 cable PC is the master and the other(s) PC have BN26 cables.
Thanks for every body for your helps, you are very INTELLIGENT...

161.10 | give a beginner a chance? | PCBUOA::KRATZ | | Mon Mar 13 1995 12:03 | 13 |
| Seems as good as place as any...
What are the best ways to give a beginning player a chance against
more experienced players in deathmatch? The beginning player starts
at -level 1 while the other start at -level 5, but it doesn't seem
to make any difference in terms of how many shots they can take before
dying. The -turbo speed boost is ok, but is there a way for the
beginning player to start with better weapons? I did read the network
addendum and README.TXT.
P.S. setting up two plug and play 3com 3c509b's for Doom2 was trivial:
install the boards, run AUTOLINK to set up the Novell IPX driver, and
IPXSETUP.

| Apart from the -turbo option (which really was to allow for slower
machines), DOOM doesn't allow any kind of advantages over
network/serial play - they could be seen as cheats, which is one thing
it doesn't allow in this mode of play.
You're only options are :-
o Practise by yourself on hard level settings
o Play experienced others who are complete goits and kill you at
every possible opportunity. Just bear with it.
o Play experienced others who will give you a chance to develop,
and bear with it :-)
Good luck, keep with it !

Dan

the experienced players limit themselves to pistol and chainsaw/fists
against the novice players when we play.
also we play teams. 2 against 2 and usually have an experienced player
on each side. now THAT is a blast! was great in heretic, i saw two
guys on level 1 standing where the morph ovum appears both firing at my
partner who was inside the area where you start. i teleported in
behind them, phoenix staffed both the guys. they both caught on fire,
burned to ashes, and fell away from eachother. we were DYING!

161.13 | | PCBUOA::KRATZ | | Thu Mar 16 1995 14:24 | 11 |
| Self control... darn, I didn't think of doing that! They might
actually have a chance now! Teaming up greenhorns and advanced
players is an excellent idea too.
(Still, it would be nice if there was a switch like "-weapons 2"
that would limit a player to using or picking up only the first two
levels of weapons; i.e. fists/chainsaw and pistol... maybe next
version).
Thanks .-1 and -2.

it really sucks though when your green partner gets jealous of just how
great you are :') and shoots you in the back with the rocket launcher
(or even worse with the phoenix staff and you are carrying armloads of
morph ovums, spellbooks, rings of invulnerability, wings, etc etc etc
and you lose EVERYTHING....)
we also play me against everybody else :') a stereo soundcard and a
set of headphones is a must though, especially to chase the chicken in
heretic :').

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I can't find it...
We used to have access to a Novell network, but now its gone, and the
DEATHMATCH withdrawal symptoms have reached disaster level.
DOOM over DECNET (PATHWORKS I guess)! Is it possible? If so how?
I'm technically minded, but not on PCs, though I'd like to learn...
Can anyone help? What do we need top do? Is there another note/reply
I can look at? Any 'shareware' kit?
Thanks,
Ian

| If your talking about using this within Digital, then you can just set
up IPX between the PC's, you don't need a Novell server, so just set it
up as it was before.
I used the DOS 6 menu utility to select Deathmatch or ordinary DOS.

Yup, within Digital, however I need the IPX to be detected, I'm sure
there was a note with instructions somewhere... Damned if I can find
it.

| You should get all the necessary Novell files with the floppy disk
containing drivers for your card, ie lsl, ipx.com etc
Have you read the Doom FAQ?

161.22 | I have no floppy | MOEUR2::SMITH | Fast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion! | Wed Jul 26 1995 05:47 | 9 |

Yes I have read (most of) the FAQ, I will follow the instructions
therein once I get hold of the drivers etc.
The PC wasn't mine when new, and being in Digital, the floppy could be
anywhere, hence the question...

Ian
