158.0. "DOOM for Atari Jaguar..." by UHUH::MARISON (Scott Marison) Thu Dec 29 1994 15:50

Doom for the Atari Jaguar... what can I say about it? It's DOOM!!!

It has 30 levels (I'm pretty sure), and is about as fast as what my
486DX/33 plays at, full screen. Some slow downs with lots of baddies on
the screen, but not bad overall. The resolution is lower then the PC
version, but you can not tell except for when things are very far away,
since they tend to look a little blurry. However, the 1 big advantage for
this version of DOOM is that it uses more then just 256 colors... there
are no color bands like on the PC version, and it make things look a lot
more realistic! No music, but I didn't care much for the music in the
game anyways... but the sounds are all there. The levels are the same,
but slightly different... some new levels, unique to the Jag, as well.

I played this for the first time last night. Playing it on a 27" monitor
is something else! It's really nice. My friend has just gotten a Jag and
DOOM. I don't yet own DOOM, but I am seriously thinking about it because
you can connect 2 Jags up and play networked games! Something I've never
done on the PC version...

This is a much better then the 32X version of Doom, which I've also played.
That one pretty much sucks next to the Jag version.

overall:

game play: 10
graphics: 9.5
sound: 9
controlls: 10

Here's hoping that when the JagCD comes out, DOOM 2 or Quake will make it
as a Jag CD game...

/Scott

p.s. I must say I'm very impressed with the Jag capabilities to pull off DOOM
so well... and the Id programmer even said later on that he now knows
how he could have made the Jag DOOM engine run 50% faster either for
higher res or more levels/detail!!! Too bad they were rushed to get it
out before xmas... if they were not rushed, it probably would have run
more like Doom on a Pentium!

    Scott,

Remind me to post in here the instructions for making your own Jag link
up cable, according to my friend it's easy and saves you a packet!

Well - I didn't make my own... I bought one from Redmond Cable... I got
it yesterday and last night my friend and his Jag came over my house...
WHAT A BLAST!!! I never played multiplayer before on the PC, so this
was a first for me (and him)... and hooking up 2 jags is neat!
The only problem is that there were a fair amount of "network errors"
which would cause the game to reset at the level we were at, thus
putting all the baddies back and losing all our weapons... Co-op mode
is fun, but Deathmatch is a blast!

Atari's version of DOOM is potentially the best home videogame ever
made (however some of the other Jag games like Aliens Vs. Predator or
Iron Soldier or Tempest 2000 are way up there too)... the only thing
I wish is that the JagCD was out earlier and that DOOM was put onto
CDROM so there would have been mega levels to play...

Maybe they will come out with a new version once the JagCD is out...

158.3Possible bug in Jag DOOM?ZEKE::TELLIERSat Jan 28 1995 20:2022
      Hi all!,
I also have DOOM on the Jaguar, and was wondering if
anyone else has encountered what seems to be a bug.

     POSSIBLE SPOILER

It is on level 3, Toxin Refinery(sp?), past the Blue key door,
there is the exit. To get to it, you have to climb some stairs
that rise up out of the floor when you enter the doorway. The
problem only seems to occur if you go up the stairs AS they raise,
I've climbed them after they're up with no trouble. What happens
is I'll get about 3/4 of the way up and everything just locks up,
and I have to reset. It prints
"PLAYER IN SPECIAL LEVEL:UNKNOWN" or something similar, I don't
remember the exact words. I was just curious to see if any other
Jaguar owners/players out there have run across this.

                                              Thanks.
                                                       Tom.
(Who can't wait for more Jag games!!!)

158.4UHUH::MARISONScott MarisonMon Jan 30 1995 10:547
Yes, that is a bug... I believe what you need to do is just keep from
walking up ANY stairs on ANY level which raise up like the stairs on
Level 3...

Besides that bug, awsome game, huh?

158.5Great Game!!!!!!ZEKE::TELLIERFri Feb 03 1995 12:0619
    Great game!!!

After the second time I just figured I'd wait before stepping
on anything that moves! I usually before games that involve a
little more strategy/thought, but DOOM is good for letting off
steam at the end of the day.

A berserk chainsaw onslaught does wonders for My morale.

I've made it all the way through(ok, I admit it was on Wimp
setting :-))once just to see how high it goes. It goes up to level
23(not counting secret level(S)-I've only found one secret one so
far...) Definately better than the SEGA 32X version. The only
other nit I have is that You can't save a game. You gotta go
       through all at once.

At least on Ultra Violent setting You can pick up plenty of Ammo
       From the dead guys!

...whoops. that should be "usually prefer games" not BEFORE games...
(that's what I get for not proof reading until after I enter replies)

                                                           Tom.

24 levels total, w/ the secret level... you've found 'em all!

> Definately better than the SEGA 32X version.

Yes. I agree. And in some aspects, better then the PC version. More colors
actually give a more realistic feel since no color banding happens...
therefore the depth and shading look more realistic... also, since it's
on cart, there are not as many levels. However, if it was released on
CD-ROM, then it would, no doubt, be better then the PC version, since more
levels could be on it...

About the only thing I don't like is that dang bug with the raising
stairs... it's a pain, and should have been fixed before release...

Not true. It saves the last level you were on... Say you get up to level
10, you can continue at level 10. Of course, all you'll have is a gun.

Ok... I'm on level 12 or 13 now, and I've found 100% secrets on all
but level 10(?? I think... it's the one with with all the boxes...)

I know I am missing one of the secrets on this level, and for the life of
me I can not find it!

What are the secrets for this level?
