| I've heard tonnes of natter about this in the 'net newsgroups. Every
time someone mentions it in rec.games.blah.blah.doom.blah.... they get
flamed because it's "not Doom is it?"... oh well. There's the 'net for
you.
Maybe this note should be modded out for not being about Doom - in true
'net style ;-))
No, but seriously, I haven't seen it around....

Just because I've had a bad day... Folks reading this conf. with the
Windows Conferencing client don't handle FFs (^L) like the VT client
does. It doesn't do a FormFeed it just gives you a small rectangle on
the screen and shows you the text - it does not 'secure' spoilers et
al. It is good practice to use blank lines to hide spoilers etc. rather
than FFs.

weapon your opponent is holding (no surprise though). Can't wait for

If you play the game then quit and then try to restart the game again
an error message informs you that the WAD file is corrupt. It took two
or three installs before I discovered that rebooting cured the problem,
i.e. there is nothing wrong with the WAD file.
Not a gripe, this is a Beta after all, just trying to save some other

From my experiments, (several reinstalls, much WTF? Where's the OpenVMS
version? - this wouldn't happen on a *proper* operating system!), I
believe the "Corrupt WAD file" message is actually a test "suicide
clause". I can reliably get HERETIC to work, without rebooting provided
the DOS date is prior to about 1800 23rd December. Any date after that
fails, even immediately after a reboot.
I had assumed that this was intended to make people get the released
version (indeed, that's why I'm in here now, looking for it!). I haven't
checked the date limits within which HERETIC works, but I'd bet it won't
work with the date set prior to its build date.
My son likes this game more than DOOM, he says the monsters are more
tenacious. I tend to agree, after the flying demons, Imps are more like
WImps. I also like the ability to save goodies and use them when you
want them. My only criticism is that the test is a bit too easy,
though perhaps UV mode hasn't been implemented? Nightmare done's seem
to be either. Roll on the shareware version!

yep, thats the case, it was timebombed. i've had people over all
weekend playing 4 person shareware release (its on wuarchive.wustl.edu)
it's got some network bugs (from time to time we'll start getting
knocked off the network one by one... I wish you could join a game in
progress via network. it stinks that everybody has to quit to get the
guy that dropped back in).
now, the decision... do we use this conference for heretic also, or
create a seperate one (or use games)? this thing is going to be as big
as doom. in fact, most people have liked it better so far. The
chicken is absolutely GREAT in network mode.

Oh yeah, I vote for a new conference. This one for Doom has worked
really well... It's *far* better than having just one topic in GAMES.
However, we let DOOM live in GAMES for so long, there's a lot of "lost"
information. It would be a shame for the same to happen to Heretic.
Cheers, Laurie.

| Ok, I've found the shareware V1.0 of Heretic (see .18). It's a single
ZIP file of 2876540 bytes. I have tested it or anything, but I've stuck
in in the default DECNET directory of FLYTE:: I expect Dan will move it
to a permanent place as soon as he can.
Here's the text file that came with it:
--- snip ---
Heretic is a supernatural blast-fest that is the most realistic,
action-packed fantasy combat computer game for the PC. Created by the
graphic masters at Raven Software in concert with the technical gurus
of id Software, Heretic adds new levels of play and graphic wonder to
the tried and true DOOM gaming environment. 486-33, 4 megs RAM, VGA, 10
megs HD space. RSAC ADVISORY (tm), Violence: 3 (Blood and Gore)

| Totally Unauthorized Cheat Codes for Heretic.
by Robert E. Waring
Guess you would like to know how to cheat in Heretic, well,
don't type iddqd, you've probably figured that one out by now.
idkfa doesn't work either. I'll show you the codes that do work,
and if you have any problems, or questions,
drop me a note at 73252,1413.
Also, look for my Totally Unauthorized Guide
to DOOM II & Heretic due out soon!
I'm working on the developers parameters,
i.e. -devparm, and will upload that document as soon as I can.
The Heretic Cheat Codes
Note: Just type these codes in while playing,
you will receive the benefit immediately. These codes only
work on the first 4 difficulty levels, the 5 level is like the
nightmare mode in DOOM & DOOM II.
The Code What it does
kitty = Toggle Clipping
- Walk through walls, type it again
to turn it off
ravmap = Shows entire map in map mode
(Hit tab for map mode)
type ravmap twice shows where all the monsters are
type ravmap a third time to revert to the original.
massacre = This kills all of the monsters on the current level.
skel = This gives you all the keys
rambo = This gives you all the weapons and 200% Armor!
quicken = GOD Mode. You can't be harmed
ponce = Full Health
shazam = Weapon Power up (Tome of Power) lasts for 30 secs.
engage = Level Warp. i.e. engage12 would take you to
the second level of the first epidsode.
gimme = This gives you the other Heretic items from a menu.
It will ask for an item letter (a-j)
and a quanity (1-9)
i.e. gimme a 9
This would give you 9 invincibility rings.
You then use the items from your inventory
using the [ ] keys to select it, then press
enter to load the item, press enter again
during play to use the item.
Here are the letters for the gimme command
a: Ring of Invincibility
b: Shadowsphere (Partial Invisibility)
c: Quartz Flask (Purple Vial, gives 7 chain links of health)
d: bad input (havn't figured this one out yet)
e: Tome of Power (Black Skull Book, gives your weapons superpowers!
f: Torch (Light up dark areas, duh.)
g: Bomb of the Ancients (If you lay one down, move away fast!)
h: Morph Ovum (Turns the enemy into a chicken)
- The little chickens will attack and peck you, kill them!
i: Wings of Wrath (You can fly!)
j: bad input (havn't figured this one out yet)
And finally, ever wonder what Heretic looks like
from a chickens point of view?
Type cockadoodledoo
This turns you into a chicken for a short period of time.
I hope this helps in your struggles and look for more
extensive coverage of Heretic in my
Totally Unauthorized Guide to Heretic due out soon!

155.62 | Sound problems similar to Doom ][ | WARABI::ROWBOTHAM | Wot's this button 'ere for? | Tue Jan 03 1995 23:36 | 30 |
|
I loaded Heretic last night and ended up with sound FX
problems similar to those I encountered (and still
encounter) in Doom ][ - i.e. any sound effects triggers
a click which echoes on about a 200ms delay with a
feedback of about 105% meaning the echo increases in
loadness over time.
Is anyone else getting this problem on Heretic? Was there
a fix for Doom ][ which I may have missed and which might
also work for Heretic?
BTW, I've tried a few, but my current settings are:
SFX Music
Device SoundBlaster WaveBlaster
MIDI Port 220 330
IRQ 7
DMA 1
No of FX Ch. 3
I've got an Ensoniq Soundscape card which works fine with
all other versions of Doom.
advTHANKSance,
Jonathan

| Hi Jonathan,
I use the Reveal SC600 which also boasts the Ensoniq Soundscape
chip. There's a fix posted by Ensoniq on Compuserve which is supposed
to cure your problem. It didn't work for me with the Reveal, but there
are supposed to be some Reveal specifics which aren't catered for. Let
me know if you want it and I'll try and remember to get you the fix.

155.64 | so how and where are we playing? | DAVE::MITTON | Windows in '95 | Thu Jan 05 1995 12:05 | 11 |
| is there a Heretic notes conference yet?
Or why not just extend this conference for the Heretic levels??
I'm down to level 4 (or five) and beginning to suffer from lots of
monsters (especially those dang flying deamons, the imps of Heretic)
coming at me too quick to do anything but cheat.
Looking for new battle/survial tips and techniques.
Dave.

| When playing a deathmatch game in Heretic and some jokester turns you
into a chicken you can use the tome of power book to restore your self
back to normal.

Is there a document somewhere detailing what is required of a
conference moderator and giving exhaustive instructions on `How to'.
If I thought it feasible I would volunteer to moderate the Heretic
conference. I am, however, as green as they come regarding notes
commands. ?:'.

| Ok, Im a DOOM and DOOM2 fan. Since the kid's and I finished DOOM2 in
Network mode at Ultra Violence over Xmas life has been dull... but this
conference has saved the day.
HERETIC.... great, Love it.
But... If you save a network game it doesn't show up from SETUP. You
can use -loadgame param from DOS with IPXSETUP and that works fine. I
know this is a minor whinge, but if there is a solution I would
appreciate it.
Can't wait to get the full registered version....
Paul.
