150.0. "DOOM 1.2 under Windows 3.1??" by WELSWS::BOURNEJ (Now 2 grandsons - Timothy & Joshua) Wed Nov 30 1994 09:21

    I know that DOOM is a DOS game but I'm sure I got it working under
    Windows 3.1 with my old 386SX-25 but when I run it now under Windows
    3.1 with my new 486DX2-66 it hangs at the first screen and I have to
    cold start the system.

    Does anyone have it working and if so what info have you put in your
    PIF?

    Regards,

    Jim

150.1Forget W*ndowsSUBPAC::MAGGARDIntegrate!Wed Nov 30 1994 10:546
Trying to get Doom (1 or 2) to run under W*ndows is a waste of time.

Define yourself a multi-config/autoexec setup and use the 3-finger-salute.

    There may be some info on this in the FAQ.

    I'm tempted to ask... Why bother trying?

    Laurie,

    Because I have problems at the moment with the sound, I wanted to see
    if running it from within windows would make any difference to the
    sound. Before it locks up there is a blast of normal sound!

    Ahhh, it's probably a DMA or IRQ problem then. I suspect you have a
    mismatch between what you've set up in Windoze and in the blaster
    variable. Check it out.

    Cheers, Laurie.
150.7Looks like SB in some way!!!WELSWS::BOURNEJNow 2 grandsons - Timothy & JoshuaTue Dec 06 1994 06:0712
    Laurie,

    What windoze setup should I check?

    This is definately SB related. If I run DOOM with no sound card
    specified then it works fine under windows but if I specify SB then it
    locks up. Looks like the same problem I am chasing in notes 78.32 onwards.

    Regards,

    There are two places the SB is set up. One in CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT
    where you define the driver and set the BLASTER variable. On my
    machine, the SB settings are reported on boot when the device driver
    kicks in. The other place in is Windoze. I don't have an SB-equipped PC
    here at work, and I forget where it is on my PC at home, so I'll have
    to guess. There's a group called audio on my PC, it may be in there, or
    perhaps under Control Panel somewhere. You could also look under
    Windows Setup. Oh the trials of an aged brain!

    Persevere, DOOM is nothing without sound!

    Cheers, Laurie.
150.9dos sound and Windoze don't mix!SUBPAC::MAGGARDIntegrate!Tue Dec 06 1994 11:3415
re: .6, .7, .8

Windows doesn't like DOS-box apps to use sound. Conflict city. I don't know
the exact reason why, but I suspect that Windows doesn't like DMA transfers
that it doesn't have control over.

The same thing will happen with other DOS games that aren't coded to be
Windows friendly (Air Warrior, Doom, etc.).

Perhaps also something with the dos-extender ... running two protected mode
programs on the same PC is askin for it.

150.10Disable windows' soundKERNEL::BROWNMDRACTue Dec 06 1994 12:157
    Try disabling sound within windows. So if you have funky sound card
    .wavs setup disable everything like that, even go as far as removing
    sound drivers. What happens is that windows allocates itself the
    soundcard, so you then have irq problems and things when 2 things try
    and use the same device.

    Thanks folks,

    That just leaves my other problem with sound from DOS.

150.12Oh yes they can !!!WELSWS::GRISSKThu Dec 08 1994 10:0711

    Jim,

    I once had the same problem that windows wouldn't allow dos based apps
    to access the sound blaster. The fix was to update to the new
    SUPER-SAPI driver available from Westpoint Creatives BBS.

    Good luck..

Please tell us more! (like what's the number for the WC BBS? ...and/or is
there a copy of this available via FTP or on the DECNET somewhere?)
