140.0. "Doom on network, hangs." by KAOFS::A_VIAU () Mon Oct 31 1994 12:18

While trying to play a network game with this configuration, the 486
hangs and the 386 has a blank screen.

    486-33 386-25
    8mb ram 8mb ram
trident 1mb svga trident 1mb svga

They both use a de100 configured with jumpers to be set at irq 5 i/o
    300 using c800 memory location.
The 486 hangs at initialising network.
The 386 goes right through but a blank screen.

    I use DL100 to configure them , I use socket # 1 for both.

PS* when searching for nodes they find each other it's when it starts
    DOOM v1.666 that everything happens.

    Any suggestions????
    Andre

Have you tried any other networking software ie. is this a network
    problem or a doom problem?

DOOM does not need much in the way of network drivers so you could try
removing a few to see if they are conflicting.

If all else fails, we found that sometimes its fussy about what you
type in at the command line. So just in case, make sure BOTH machines
type exactly the same thing (eg)

C:\> IPXSETUP -FILE ULTIM.WAD -DEATHMATCH -NOMONSTERS -NODES 2

Is this a network problem or a doom problem? If the network works fine
for other applications then it's probably something to do with loaded
drivers.... I don't know if this helps since I don't really know what
they are, but the drivers we load (and in this order) are LSL.COM,
NE2000.COM (card driver) and then IPXODI.COM. I'm unfamiliar with your
network so this is all I can offer.
140.4Here it is...KAOFS::A_VIAUTue Nov 01 1994 11:285
All I'm using is ipx.com created with the utility Jumpers.
    Using irq5 i/o 300 mem c800 on both machines.
I'm using this through dl100 and/or doom control centre.

Hmmm.... but does your network work over other things (ie. Windows for
    Workgroups, etc).

It may be an IRQ conflict if it doesn't.... do you have sound cards
using IRQ 5? We did, so we changed our network cards to work on IRQ 3.
    That helped..... ;-)

Otherwise I can't really help I'm afraid, this 'dl100' business is new
    to me.

    Hold on...

...doesn't Doom only work over IPX protocol networks?

COrrect me if I'm wrong etc etc....

    That's correct and that's what I think I'm doing...

Only ipx.com with 2 de100 configured with jumpers.

I'm not up on the 'de100' business - is this software or hardware?!?

What network cards are you using?
What drivers, other than ipx.xom, are you using (or is this what de100
    is?)
'configured with jumpers' - are you on about the network cards jumper
    settings?

If 'de100' refers to your network cards, then where are your card
    drivers?

Sorry if this sounds silly, I'm lost and you haven't given enough info

de100 is a Digital Network card, the jumpers he's configured will be on

Have you tried using NDIS as opposed to ODI?
140.13irq? network?KERNEL::BROWNMDRACWed Nov 09 1994 09:226
AS an earlier note said, check the irq settings of any soundcards,
failing that and you are sure that all other networking works (how are
you checking this?) then it must be the doom networking causing the
    problem.

No I havn't used ndis, I'm not sure what <i would require to do this.
I took ipx.com because of a small overhead....
