Thanks Dan, I've got it. A simple question :-) I've not used any other
WAD so far, do I install it into the Doom directory and type Aliens to
run? Does it do anything nasty to my standard (Commercial) Doom, I'd
still like to play that in the future, although I have splashed out and
bought DoomII now.
many thanks,

|
139.10 | | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Tue Oct 25 1994 11:49 | 11 |
| Yes just unzip it into the Doom directory.
It does alter your main WAD file and DOOM code (but this is
reversible). However to be ultra-safe you might consider making copies
of the files DOOM.WAD and DOOM.EXE
The Aliens batch file menu options should be self explanatory... run it
once to install Aliens-TC. Run it again to de-install it.
I've had no problems with it screwing Doom up, but just to be safe you
could do as above. Have fun!

| re.11
It follows the film script quite closely. First two levels are rather
quite. Then all hell breaks loose!
Hint: Unlike Doom, the aim here is to finish a level not kill
everything. Indeed, on some levels it is not possible to kill
everything (if you're playing HMP or DM for instance).
I must say, when you know the ins and outs of WAD design and how Doom
works, this Aliens-TC impresses you even more. The extra sounds, the
eggs, how he got it all to work, etc.... it's fascinating though, as
I've said before, the aliens themselves are a little disappointing.

| Things I liked about Aliens TC:
The concept
The alien sounds
The face huggers
The new WADs
The new weapons
The Loader replacement for Berserker mode
The need for new strategy
The ease of conversion
Things I didn't like:
The sounds aliens make when they die - they still sound like imps
The similar appearance of most of the aliens
The Queen Alien - graphically a major disappointment
Aliens which shoot things at you (no such thing in the movie)
Some Aliens leave shotguns behind when you kill them!

| I havn't got it infront of me, so you'll have to bear with me!!!
You are looking at a section of wall that (when you shot it) has opened
about a quater of the way up. Yes?
To your right is a door. Go thru it. You should be in a smallish room
that has some oil drums in it.
The only way out is another door on the right hand side of the room.
Go thru this, and there is some sort of door (look hard/use map etc)
very soon on the left hand side.
Open this, and then you should find 2 doors, 1 infront, and 1 on the
right (set back a tinny bit.) The one on the right is Alien City, the
other I dunno, I never made it!
If this is wrong I'm sorry, and I'll have a look tonight.

from here. (You arrive in a corner).
I can wait until tomorrow, I have to leave now in any case...

139.27 | Lots and lots.... | IOSG::MASON | Exiled and Ridiculed | Wed Nov 02 1994 04:28 | 30 |
| Spoiler.
Right, ok, here we go.
When you start, you are in a long, wide corridor with a barricade half
way up. You objective is to get to the other end.
From the part open door, turn around, go thru the curvy corridor (same
as yesterday) and open the door on the right. Stairs. Go down 1 lot
(well 2 flights actually) so that you are on sub level 37. No straight
on, and there is an opening on the right (not a door, sorry). Stand in
the opening, and a lift will take you down to the start of the
alien-type-bit.
You'll really the map to understand the next bit, but : At the moment,
you are just about in the middle of the map (well, maybe a bit below
centre). You need to work your way down to the bottom (still in the
centre Left - Right wise) of the map. Now make your way almost to the very
top-right of the map, and you will find a yellow key (also, somewhere
around here, you need to go up some stairs, and the yellow key I think
is back in a normal looking room.)
Once you have the key, make your way to the other end of the corridor
you started in, and at the very far end is a switch on the wall. That
will end the level.

139.31 | ALIENS-TC - tricks of the trade | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Wed Nov 02 1994 07:05 | 33 |
| Okay, look, I think it might help if you get a grip around how
ALIENS-TC works, because I did this level no problems and frankly I
can't see where you're getting stuck....
The aliens tunnels look very good, with extra pieces of wall seemingly
hanging off the ceiling/sprouting from the floor/etc. For arguments
sake let's call these stalactites and stalagmites. Now, when you look
at the map of an alien tunnel it looks a lot more simple - just flat
surfaces.
What the designer of the level has done is use flat surfaces for the
general corrider, and then used OBJECTS (with redefined sprites) to
simulate extra pieces of wall, stalactites and stalagmites.
Hence some pieces of corridor may be blocked by 'objects' which you
*may* be able to walk around (just like, say, a candle or lantern in
the original DOOM).
ALIENS-TC also has some walls in the alien corridors which set alite
when shot, allowing you to get through (albeit while getting burnt a
little!). These only appear on later levels.
Also, the effect of aliens jumping out behind you/ on top of you, is
created by the designer making 'walk-through' walls. They look solid,
but behind them is a DEAF alien (ie. he is only activated when he sees
you, not hears you)... so you can be walking down a corridor and
suddenly you walk past an invisible wall and an alien pops out behind
you and tears your head off!
I hope this helps you through ALIENS-TC because level 2 is namby-pamby
and wait till you get to some later ones!
Dan

yeah, well, I can see the flat outline of the corridor, and had
detected the use of objects to 'clutter' it up. I had tried shooting
at things as well, but, obviously not in the right places, perseverence
(or however its spelt) I guess.
btw, I do like the design, and the intro. level with no aliens...
Ian
|
139.33 | Still, nope! | MOEUR2::SMITH | Fast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion! | Thu Nov 03 1994 03:11 | 19 |
|
Ok, so its too good for me, I spent hours down there last night, I even
expended all my ammo, and tried 'wielding' my fist, but still couldn't
slip past those objects cluttering the corridor. Surely its not *that*
difficult? Believe me I tried EVERYTHING I could think of, forwards,
backwards, sideways, angled, running, walking, running and turning etc,
etc. I even tried running off the lift!
I spent some time in preparation, squeezing past candlesticks in the
hallway, there are some where you get blocked, but can push through by
turning a little, I was practising.
All of the above was done in screen mode, and good old 2D map mode,
nothing.
So Aliens-TC has beaten me, the 'Namby-Pamby' 2nd level was too much, I
am probably quite glad I didn't see the tougher spaces.

| re v.1666
I dunno. I was just thinking maybe Aliens-TC only works on 1.666
(though I doubt it). Forget it. I was just trying to find a reason why
you couldn't walk down a corridor..... I thought maybe earlier versions
of doom has a smaller object radius (ie. in Doom 1.666 objects seem
smaller so you can walk inbetween them)
But I severely doubt this is the case.

You'll be ok then. Aliens-TC won't work with DOOM2 (although I hear a
version that will do so is coming...).
Cheers, Laurie.

| Before reinstalling version 1.1 and patching to 1.2, I did what I
originally said I would in 139.61 and guess what... it worked!
As I suspected the SETUP.EXE v1.666 is the same, whether you are running
DOOM 1 or 2 .
Completed levels 1 & 2 last night but could only find one corridor in
Aliensville that was impassable. So I'm not sure what the problem was
with the earlier 139.xx noters. A total lack of patience maybe. (=-,
A couple of oddities I would like to know if other players have
experienced.
- Firstly, one of the large pillars in a hangar on level 1 had a large
yellow & black `02' on both sides. Approaching one of these labels closely
until it fills the screen causes my 486 66DX2 with 32Mb RAM to slow
down incredibly (turning the turbo button off causes it to vertually
stop).
- Secondly, on completion of level 2 I was rewarded with a score of
100% kills, 0% items and 0% secrets, yet I picked up all the items I
could, found the red and yellow keys and explored all the ventilation
shafts, is this the norm?
with regard to 139.66 I agree the aliens need some work but I think you
should keep your shiny thing in your pocket! =8^.
Tara,
Nick.

| He he. Th name sort of requires you to watch Red Dwarf, or it may
indeed sound a bit dodgy.
I actually meant to change it a while back, but forgot. Sorry.

Wow, 9 months since anyone posted in here! My pal has version 1.2
registered installed, with the Aliens TC over the top. He (We) want to
de-install Aliens, but it tells us that not all the files are availble.
I went and got the Aliens TC zip from the net, but the message is still
the same. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,
Ian

Hi,
I've found Aliens-TC for DOOM2 at
http://www.as.wvu.edu/~delfosse/doom2.html
themes/aliens/doom2atc.zip (2130K)
Very impressed about graphics, sounds ...but not too much about
monsters.
