132.0. "Doom 2: Survior's Guide bugs" by DAVE::MITTON (Token rings happen) Mon Oct 10 1994 12:34

    The DooM II "Surviors Guide" (about $6.98) that came with my package
    is nothing like the Official Guide to the original Doom.

    It only recaps the monsters and weapons (which you already have a
    description of in the game docs) and then give the level maps
    without description.

    The level maps don't show the triggers. They do show switches, but no
    explanation of what they control.

    Furthermore the maps have BUGS!

    The map for Level 7; Dead Simple promises a compartment on the NE side
    of the level with a BFG. It ain't there. The map also doesn't show
    the IV sphere and one of the weapons on the southern platforms.

    The map for Level 8, Tricks and Traps also promises a BFG off one of
    the rooms. I could not find it. And heaven knowns you can use it in
    this level.

    (I finally got my BFG in Level 9!)

    	Dave.

132.1FORTY2::HOWELLJust get to the point...Mon Oct 10 1994 12:437
    There IS a room in the NE corner of Dead Simple with a BFG. You just
    only see it in deathmatch (as far as I know).

    As for the BFG, by the start of Tricks & Traps, I had EVERYTHING. You
    are simply missing something.

    Hope this helps :-) !!

    I could be wrong (!) but since you can assign a skill level to a thing
    (eg if you aren't playing in Ultraviolent), then you may not "see" all
    available objects, ie the BFG. Just a thought...

    That's true, yes. I imagine that's why he hasn't got the BFG.

    My first time around I played at woopsy pansy level {8^]
    Sorry, I'll get onto some harder fragging like you guys tonight....
132.4What changes based on vlevel?DAVE::MITTONToken rings happenTue Oct 11 1994 11:108
    hmm.... It was my understanding that the Violence level only affected
    the number of monsters, and maybe some of the artifacts.

    Are you now telling me that the walls/configuration also changes?

    I guess someone with a WAD editor should be able to comment on this?

    	Dave (yes, playing not-too-rough first time through)
132.5yes and noVESSA::MICHAELSONJDedicated BuggerTue Oct 11 1994 13:059
    In my experience of WAD creation (certainly in orig. DOOM)
    any THING (ie anything you can see/collect/kill other than walls) can
    be given a value which determines on which skill levels it will appear
    (ie 1-4 or all). Therefore if you are playing on some mamby-pamby soft
    level then you might not see certain things (or transversly may see more
    more, eg ammo). This absolutely does not apply to walls/moving
    sectors/switches etc.

132.6NE Alcove in "Dead Simple"FORTY2::HOWELLJust get to the point...Wed Oct 12 1994 07:5016
    Yes I agree. Regarding this BFG-area on "Dead Simple" :-

    What I think *MIGHT* happen is this.... there's an area underground
    where, when playing deathmatch, it is possible to start from. However
    while playing normal play, there is no way to get to it ( ie. the
    trigger for the lift to it is only on one side).

    Now, down there must be either a trigger line or a switch which reveals
    this small alcove in the NE corner containing the BFG (ie. lifts up the
    wall).

    I can see no other way to limit an *area* in one mode of play, but
    allow it in another. But one thing is for definite, it DOES exist (just
    turn clipping off and walk through the wall!)

132.7BFG in Tricks 'n Traps'FAILTE::HUTCHESONTTue Oct 25 1994 08:5316

    re .0

    When I did Tricks 'n' Traps I didn't find a BFG, but I've just watched
    someone else find it. Its in the room with lots of two-legged pink
    wilderbeast. The left hand red switch opens the outer room door, the
    right hand opened a door at the back of the room, which I'm sure it
    didn't do for me (on the same difficulty level - UltraViolence, I think
    it is).

    Entering this room, killing the pinkos then opening a wall to the right
    (as you enter) gets the BFG. Hope this isn't giving too much away.

    Tim.

132.8sometimes the clues are subtleDAVE::MITTONToken rings happenTue Oct 25 1994 12:198
    Yes, I've re-started Doom II at a higher skill/violence level, and the
    BFG in Trick & Traps becomes available. (or maybe I hadn't put it all
    together before) You need to get two switches before the room becomes
    reachable, and you have to know to shoot the wall, to get it to open.

    A hint: Notice the candles lying around in this level.

    Dave.
