The DMAS (DOOM Music Archive Server), provides music for authors of DOOM
wads. The music files have been specially written for the game DOOM, by
iD Software. They have been arranged into categories (Areas) of mood,
atmosphere etc. Current Areas are 'tension', 'action', 'haunting', 'misc'.
To obtain music for your wad send a message to the DMAS server at

[email protected]
Subject: musicserver

The system is now fully-automated so your requests should be processed in
a few minutes, but allow some hours for net-lag etc.

In the body of your message place these commands only:

get access <<< Apply for access to the library!
Allow a few days for your account
to be set up, but on weekdays it should be
                                   processed in a few hours).
get information <<< Request the _latest_ information on the
music library/archive service and the DMAS.
get catalog <<< Request the _latest_ COMPLETE list of music
files in the library. (Version 1.0 allowed
listings of just Area groupings, but this
                                   arrangement seemed pointless so was
                                   superseded).

These commands are only valid if you have access to the library, see
'get access'.

get <musicfile1.zip> <<< Get those music files!! You can request
get <musicfile2.zip> <<< as many files as you wish......
get <musicfile3.zip> <<< N.B. Filenames in Catalog.
etc.

update <<< This tells you what the current Version
number the Information and more importantly,
the Catalog are on. Since music files are
being uploaded at a fair rate, the Catalog
will therefore be updated quite often.
                                   (New Command).

exit <<< You ***MUST*** include this command at
the end of your requests and BEFORE your
                                   .sig file!!!!

Other changes in Server 2.0 is that all requests are being logged. This is
only so that we know what AREAS and files are the most popular, so that more
music of that type can be produced.

When you have recieved the music file, it will be in UUENCODED format, at
the end of an email message to you. This uuencoded message is the music file
in .ZIP format. Edit the message, cutting out the email header, then
issue the command 'uudecode <edited file>' at your unix or dos prompt.
This will produced the .ZIP file as seen in the catalog.

Pkunzip the file, using the shareware facility, PKUNZIP.EXE, available at
most ftp sites and this will produce the .MUS file and the .TXT file.

Use the shareware program, DMMUSIC.EXE, again available at most DOOM ftp
sites, to convert the .MUS file to a PWAD.
(DMMUSIC.EXE is also available in the Util area, from the DMAS server)

The command is:

dmmusic d_(wad level) -f music.wad -s <musicfile>.mus

eg.

dmmusic d_e1m1 -f music.wad -s uactheme.mus

Next load doom with:

DOOM -file yourwad.wad music.wad

OR

Group the two wads together into a large PWAD for releasing to the net.

If you have any problems then please feel free to contact the DMAS
administrator at:

[email protected]

Thankyou for taking the time to read this,

This catalog relates only to the files available on public domain for use with
the game DOOM, by id Sofware. Catalogs of files available for commercial
software projects, and for shareware projects are obtainable seperately from
DMAS.

TRADEMARK INFORMATION
---------------------

The following is a list of trademarks and are acknowledged as such. Any
not included here are still hypothetically acknowledged: id Software, DOOM,
Creative Labs, Sound Blaster, Roland, MT32, Orchid, Soundwave 32, AWE32,
Gravis, Ultrasound (GUS), Adlib.

--------------
IMPORTANT NOTE
--------------

Please note that music files have been compiled with only one format in mind.
Since all compositions were originally written and optimized for best
performance with General MIDI soundcards and to be played only with
WaveTable Synthesis and not cards with FM Synthesis, some music will sound
strange if played on Adlib/Soundblaster compatible cards. The section of files
that follows is for WaveTable General MIDI cards only (AWE32, Soundwave &
Gamewave 32, Gravis Ultrasound, TurtleBeach Multisound) NOT Soundblaster.
For Soundblaster users not to miss out, and for wad authors to offer music
for both formats, a SEPARATE section of music files is listed. This section
will contain cut-down, remixed, re-orchestrated versions of the Wavetable
music and extra music in its own right.

(14/9/94 - Editor's note: The composer's have refused to translate their
General MIDI music for Soundblaster, and who really blames them. I therefore,
have to do the translation. This will take time but I will do it a.s.a.p.)

For convenience, to help you locate the file most suitable for your Doom WAD,
files are sorted under AREA HEADINGS. If your wad is fast violent action, then
you would probably want fast paced music rather than slow paced music so could
look under ACTION and then probably TENSION.

Current AREAS: Action, Tension, Haunting, Melodic, Misc, Utilities

Key for listings:

UACTHEME.ZIP ........................ This is the file to 'get' from the

DEMON.ZIP

Name: 'Death of a Demon'
Composer(s): Tim MacLachlan
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: DEMON_GM.MUS, DEMON.TXT

Death to all demons... Menacing, power bass. Lots of heavy toms. May sound
nice if accompanied by a rather large machine gun shooting everything.

MTEREBUS.ZIP

Name: 'On the Way to Mt. Erebus'
Composer(s): Tim MacLachlan
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: EREBU_GM.MUS, MTEREBUS.TXT

Rather meaty power bass with electric-snare drives the piece along. Screaming
pitch-bend lead line.

THRASH.ZIP

Name: 'Thrash'
Composer(s): Andre Lucas
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: THRAS_GM.MUS, THRAS.TXT

thrash cliche. Noisy. Loud. Real attitude. Really really strange......

UACTHEME.ZIP

Name: 'U.A.C. Theme'
Composer(s): Tim MacLachlan
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: UACTH_GM.MUS, UACTH.TXT

Name: 'Aliens'
Composer(s): Tim MacLachlan
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: ALIEN_GM.MUS, ALIEN.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI

Flanged, echoed bass and snare fx. Funeral toll. Morbid. Spooky. Strange
fx and on general midi, heartbeats and breathing.

MOUND.ZIP

TWILIGHT.ZIP

Name: 'Twilight'
Composer(s): Andre Lucas
Email: [email protected]
Contains Files: TWILI_GM.MUS, TWILI.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI

Very similar to the infamous Twilight Zone riff but with extremely disturbing
string distorted harmonies underneath. Grating. Very unnerving. Dont go
to sleep afterwards or the riff will haunt you- guaranteed.

                                MELODIC
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUEENDL.ZIP

Name: 'Queen of the Doom Lords'
Composer(s): Tim MacLachlan
Email: [email protected]
Included Files: QUEEN_GM.MUS, QUEEN_GM.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI _ONLY_.

Huge sounding. Wild fretless bass throughout. Each 'section' of the music has
a different, yet linked feel. 'Big orchestra' included. Sounds _massive_ in Doom,
so beware. Nice clean electric 'crying' guitar solo.

Editor's note:
>>WARNING: This piece pushes major GM wavetable soundcards to the limit
due to its demand on midi polyphony. (Recommended cards: GUS,SW32,AWE32,TBMS)
>>>DO NOT<< play on a Soundblaster since it cannot cope with 24 voice-load.
If you do (masochist) you will receive at least a 80% reduction in quality.<<<
Disclaimer: If your Soundblaster overheats, don't blame us!

SUNSET.ZIP

Name: 'Sunset on the Shores of Hell'
Composer(s): James Goddard
Email: N/A
Included Files: SUNSE_GM.MUS, SUNSET.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI

Medieval ballad-like lute piece. Seems to fit E1M4 quite well. Oboes, bass
and is a nice gentle guitary piece. Calm music with action-packed level.

BARBHELL.ZIP

Name: 'Barb-B-Q on the Shores of Hell'
Composer(s): James Goddard
Email: N/A
Included Files: BARB_GM.MUS, BARB.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI

A kind of an eastern influenced dance type of thang with a steel drums bit
in the middle. A bit of an Enigma?... Break out the tia maria matey and no
large error...

Editor's Note: what ??????

MOONLITE.ZIP

Name: 'Moonlight Sonata'
Composer(s): Ludwig V. Beethoven
Email: None
Included Files: MONLI_GM.MUS, MOON.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI

Editor's Note: This famous piece has been well-renound for being used to
create a calm, but spooky and sometimes tense atmosphere. Often used in horror films for effect
so could be useful for DOOM.

DORC1.ZIP

Included Files: DORC1_GM.MUS, DORC1.TXT
Playback: Wavetable General MIDI
