123.0. "DOOM: THE MOVIE" by LEDS::MCCULLER () Fri Sep 16 1994 14:28

I just received the premier edition of a new mag, Computer Life.
There is an article in it discussing DOOM: The Movie. The author
(Gregg Keizer) says he used to be the boss at Softdisk, a small
Louisiana software company where several of the programmers from ID
used to work for him at 20-30 grand a year.

Gregg says that Moe Lospinoso, a producer with Ethos Films, has
bought the option on the game and is pitching it to various
studios. Apparently, International Creative Management, a talent
agency, has even traveled to Mesquite Texas (where ID resides)
in hopes of (buying) the property!

He goes on to say that several big-name Hollywood-types are serious
DOOM fanatics, and names Robin Williams and Steven Spielberg as
    aficiondos.

Now here's the really interesting little nugget buried deep in
the article: Gregg says that ID plans to keep its customer base
intact by releasing it's next version of DOOM as DOOM II: Hell
on Earth, which will be a retail-only version sold by GT
Interactive. "For hard-core Doomheads--used to downloading the
first part of the game for free--the only way to feed their addiction
will be shopping and laying down the cash."

    Hmmm

Mac (who will consider trading his first-born for an advance copy
         of DOOM II)

No dice-- mine just moved out, leaving me exclusive use of the
486 & all the doom/doom wads I want to play. I willa void
    competition at almost any cost.

123.3never see the press mention open nature of doomLIVELY::MAURERMon Sep 19 1994 11:5019
I caught that article in Computer Life (talk
about a mag that is not sure what it wants to be
when it grows up). I find that all articles I
read about Doom in the mainstream press miss
the one watershed feature that will mark a
major turning point in the PC gaming industry.
I have never seen anyone mention the open
nature of the Doom architecture and how
everyone has embraced writing numerous WADs for
it, thus extending the games life. Sure the
"match" mode is cool and the 3D, real time
interface is well done, but both have been
around in other combat games for a while. The
concept of writing a game "engine", setting the
hook with enough levels to get you addicted and
then letting the world crank out endless
variations is sure to be imitated throughout
the industry. Never seen it mentioned in the
       press though.

That's because "the press" is clueless.

Which just leaves more FTP bandwidth for us computer geeks!

and that Arnold Swarzenegger was favourite for the role.
