Ok,
I think I'm missing the point in this one. I've got dead bodies all
around me to the point where the playability is severly hampered. I've
flicked switch on head of helmeted skull at top step, and ridden the
raising platform in bottom area. Can't seem to jump to ledge below
fiend spitting baddies. Notice the cubes the fiend hurls out once in
while. Any pointers appreciated.

| I've had a good few go's at this level and haven't managed to finish.
I've pressed the scull at the top of the stairs, got onto the platform
and jumped onto the platform that spits out baddies and that's it. I've
tried giving myself full ammo (a number of times) and used idbeholdv but
still either end up dead or out of ammo.I suppose I could use idclip but
that really would be cheating! Anyone managed to finish without resorting
to using cheats?

SPOILER ALERT:
Oh alright. Stand on top of the pedastal and shoot everything ya got
into that nasty blighter. But I think on some levels you may run out of
ammo, and then it might be a case of IDKFA.....

| Re -1
I've stood on top of the pedestal and given the spitting
demon loadsagreif with my bfg9000 for 10 minutes or so (using
idkfa to get more ammo) AND STILL haven't gotten anywhere. I even
resorted to using idclip to get in the corridor behind the
spitting SOB expecting to find a switch but there ain't one(but
there is some blokes head on a stick). I also tried using all my
ammo incase that caused anything to happen but no joy!
I need a spoiler. Heeeeeeelllllllllllllpppppppppppp

117.11 | | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Tue Oct 11 1994 08:55 | 11 |
| Yeah I know. You have to cheat as far as I know, I don't know anyone
who's managed to do it without running out of ammo. You can do it by
jut shooting at the head, but it takes one help of a load of ammo....
shoot at the open bit where the brain is, y'know, the skin's pulled
back to reveal the innards (hyyukk).
Or else, if you want to REALLY cheat, turn clipping off, walk to that
head on a stick in the hidden corridor, and shoot THAT. You will finish
the game very quickly then.
I think maybe the idea was NOT to finish.

message you get when you complete the level).
P.S. On which levels are the entrances to the secret levels #31 and #32

Well, do you really want a spoiler? It can be done...
>>> Warning: Spoiler for the Icon of Sin <<<
What you do is... Pull out the rocket launcher, as you travel up
the pedestal shoot into the hole which ejects the cubes.
You don't actually hit the head inside, but the explosive
damage will eventually do it in.
This is extremely difficult to do, but can be done...
Bye,
Mike.
|
117.14 | | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Thu Oct 13 1994 05:10 | 8 |
| Yes, rocket launcher explosions have an 'area' effect so the closer to
the target the missile actually explodes, the more damage it will do.
Obviously by shooting THROUGH the window you can inflict a lot more
damage, and use a lot less rockets at the same time.
This would explain why most people run out of ammo just shooting at the
top, but eventually it will have an effect (or at least I seem to
remember it did).

117.15 | Done It :-) | KERNEL::BROWNM | DRAC | Mon Oct 17 1994 07:58 | 9 |
| I did it, I completed DOOM II. Would have taken me a lot less time if
I'd had the free time, but I've done it :-). It took me a while to
work out that you had to shoot before the pillar got to the top, but it
only took about 2 or 3 rockets. before I was using 100 rockets, all my
BFG9000 rounds and all my chain gun rounds etc etc...
Now to try on a harder level (tho not Nightmare :-))

Some folks may have noticed a backwards playing recorded message in this
level. Apparently it is saying something to the effect of "To beat Doom 2 you
must kill me, John Romero."
(hint)
The strange head on the stick is supposed to be a scan of a picture of John
Romero. But this must of course be qualified (in the Id tradition) with ....
"but then again, I could be lying."

Well, I have at last got to the last level (I only get to play doom at the
weekend), but boy is this difficult? I have just read the spoiler and I am now
banging my head on the desk at my stupidity...
but can I confirm one thing...avert your eyes...
Am I right in thinking (now!) that you have to get to the top of the platforms,
flick the switch, then somehow run down onto the rising platform and blast
rockets into the hole-in-the wall ?
the worst thing is that I'll have to wait 'til friday to try again.
After that, it's time to start all over again on Ultra-Violent and try and get
100% baddies/items/secrets on every level !!

or

| Did I miss something? I finally blew up the demon and there were lots
of explosions. But the only way I got to see the head on a stick was
by IDCLIP and walking on in. Was there meant to be a no-cheat access to
the inner hall?
P.S. I liked the cast of characters at the end.

117.25 | wav sample, how? | NETCAD::FLOWERS | Hub Products Engineering; Dan | Thu Mar 09 1995 09:05 | 19 |
| I gotta admit, I gave up trying to sink the three shots... I kept getting
knocked around (and off) the platform while it's rising. So I IDCLIP'd my
way to Romero's head on a stick (and yes, shot it).
I think I'll go back and try some more... So if I do land the rocket
launcher shots into the brain, would that get me to Romero, or do you always
have to cheat?

I used the WAVE player in the SB16 to play this... (I also reversed it
again to hear the original version...) But how did you get this sample
recorded?

You always have to cheat to actually see him.
>>But how did you get this sample recorded?
At the time we just recorded it onto a tape :-). If you wanted a better
quality one, a decent editor like DMAUD might be able to extract it. I
think DoomEd 4.2 even does this, too.....

Dan

117.27 | | PCBUOA::KRATZ | | Thu Mar 09 1995 12:16 | 5 |
| I think the quickest way to land the 3 shots is by reducing the
number of elavator trips; i.e. shoot one in on the way up, and
shoot just as you jump off at the top. With a little luck, you
fall just enough as you fire to land another, and can minimize
the number of necessary elavator trips to just two.

Got here on Saturday. I read a warning that anything less that a DX66
will hamper performance. - Well that was true enough. I spent a fair
while waiting for the game to free back up. There was so much going on
it was untrue. Three times i got bombed out to dos because it couldn't
allocate enough memory to some task or other.. Is the idea to throw the
switch ride the elevator and land three rockets etc before it spits out
too many cubes or do you need to wipe them all out before hand. (The
latter of which I can't believe. I run out of ammo five times over in
god mode before my system croaks.) I'll never get this far in HMP etc
. she jus canne dooit cappen, Aye canne give unnymoor.
|
117.29 | | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Tue Mar 14 1995 06:30 | 18 |
| I think your best bet it to forget about wiping everything out, and get
to work on the blighter quickly.
You can get away without killing most things, but any projectile
throwing monsters will need taking out because they knock you off the
pedestal.
Also, pinkies in the bottom pit area can be annoying. You're on top of
the pillar, they're huddled around the bottom, and no thanks to DOOM's
wonderful height detection (ie. sod all) they can bite and rip at you
even though your feet above them!
I don't think it's so much processor speed it requires on level 30 as
much as memory too. Both help. But you're right, it's a monster of a
level demands-wise. Wanna try it on 4 megs of DX33 then? X-( bluurrgh
Cheers,
Dan
