93.5 | How do you exit the Crushing room ? | BRIEIS::STEPHENSON | | Sun Oct 16 1994 09:31 | 9 |
| Ok.. so once you've jumped onto the blue cardkey, across onto the imps
balcony and retrieved the 'cells', back onto the blue cardkey pillar,
hit the button, run along the balcony, jumped on to the rising pillar,
into the imp cave and sorted them...
Jumped down and run to the switch and watched the crushing begin, and
finished off the pink bulls...
So how do you leave the room ... ?

hold down the 'shift' key and use the keyboard arrows.

| RE .5 Just exit the way you came in. You needed the blue key to
access a door just to the right of your entrance. Look out for some
new badies up there.
Usually I hit the crusher switch first, as having those Barons around
is probably worse than dodging the incessant fireballs from the imps.
And there's a gun up there.
It's real annoying that the Doom Auto-aim algorithm has trouble
accquiring targets that are high and/or far away. It does seem to stop
the gunners from hitting me!

| Been there, done that. I jump from the stairs onto the platform and go
into the secret room behind it. Lot's of great stuff there! Anyway,
even with that, I still end up with only 66% of the secrets. I tried
the cheat code to give myself the Automap, but I couldn't see any other
secret rooms! The only thing I saw that was a grey line (areas I hadn't
been yet) on the Automap was a grey line across the slime river in the
crusher room, near the room with the teleporter in it. Has anyone found
any secrets in there?

Does it move?

| I haven't noticed, but remember that any OBJECT (weapons, keys,
stimpaks, monsters, players, other bonuses, etc....) can have an
associated difficulty setting or settings.
Therefore the designer of the level may choose the blue key to appear
in one place for easy difficulty settings, but choose another location
for anyone playing a game in ultra-violence mode !
This is how the number of monsters is controlled in Doom.... easy
settings, the designer only puts in a few monsters. For harder
settings, he creates more monsters and 'tags' them with the appropriate
difficulty setting.
I presume DOOM 2 works exactly the same way.......

93.19 | The Crusher room - summed up! | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Mon Nov 21 1994 11:59 | 56 |
| Just a few points that might clear things up :-
(possible spoilers)
o The blue key is on a ledge in the Crusher room, to your left as you
get on the lift. To reach it, you simply run off the top of the lift
through the hole in the bars. Land on the platform, collect key.
Flicking the switch here lowers the platform in the far end of the
room. You can run to this, get on, and go up into the IMp's cavern
area. There is a supercharge there if I remember rightly.
o From the ledge you can also run onto the IMp's ledge. In each cage
there is a small cell pack for your ammo.... woopee doo :-S
o The lift is the (only) way out. Simple press SPACE at the bottom to
lower it again! The blue door is near where you started.
o If you get trapped on the other side of the ooze river, there is a
teleported at one end of it (in a little alcove) which will take you
right next to the crusher.
o The imps can be shot from the ground. I used a rocket launcher, but
each to his/her own I s'pose!
o Pretty obvious, but the switch to the crusher is right at the bottom
of the lift!
o Again pretty obvious, but there's a plasma gun in the crusher.... how
come weapons/objects never get crushed ?!! ;-)

| I've already well finished the crusher room, and twigged all the above.
I've also managed to get past the Escher steps (love that description),
and the open green area with the invisible thingy in it.
Where I am at the moment is in a large room, the one where the exit is.
There is a square 'island' surrounded by a moat, with steps in the
corner. There are a lot of transporters about, one on each corner of
the island, and one on each side of the room. I took a good look around
the island, but haven't braved the steps (it looks as if there's a door
there). When I pressed the switch on the wall to raise the ledge by the
exit, about 4 million nasties jumped out of all over the place, and
wiped me out! I was just wondering if there was a technique I need, or
a particular order to do things in, although to be fair, I haven't
spent more than 5 mins looking around in this particular room.
Cheers, Laurie.

93.21 | | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Mon Nov 21 1994 12:23 | 23 |
| Okay here we go (although I don't think I've played it on the same
difficulty setting as you - I play HMP)...
Enter the room. One or more former humans walking around - easy
pickings, finish them off. Now look carefully and you should see some
invisbile spectres in the moat. Take them out with a single shot of the
supershotgun.
Over by yellow key is a switch. Press switch, lowers key. As soon as
you take the key all hell breaks loose, so BACK UP onto it.
Choose the plasma gun (well, I do anyway) or supershotgun depending on
your health/ammo and look sharp! Get the chaingun dude he poses the
most danger (he normally appears in the teleporter straight ahead of
you on the island). Imps/gorillas/humans will pop out of the nearby
teleporter to your right. Take them out. Rule number one is this room
is
K E E P M O V I N G
Otherwise, that's all I can suggest ....... ! When it's all looking
clear, pop through a teleporter, press the switch in the room, and
you're on your way to the exit (if you want to ;-) that's a hint)

I have used about the same method...
Backup onto the gold key and start firing into the nearest corner of
the square room - the more you can kill _before_ they transport out the
better you are. I usually use rockets/plasma gun to clear out all but
a few of the baddies before I run off to the left and turn around.

| The method I used was to trigger the switch then run like hell back to the door
you came in. Let the door close. Let em fight it out amongst themselves for a
while then open the door and pick em off one by one.
Standing your ground and blasting away might be fun but can be hazardous to your
health.
Everyone develops their own strategies I suppose.

My alternative (I enjoy a good battle) is hit the switch, take the
yellow card key -- and then run to a teleporter and teleport into
the central room. Using the Plasma gun just keep firing. - you
can't see what you're hitting but it only takes a few seconds of
spraying the plasma around to wipe 'em all out.

Jump to the ledge on your left. Press the button. This lowers the

it. You can run along the ledge or drop to the floor. Both work.

| I finally got some machine time last night and finished this one. The
last room was not as hard as I thought, but I certainly fired off a lot
of plasma to kill those nasties. I couldn't see any way to get to the

Anyway, I maintained my 100% * 3 record, but the room with lots of

technique.

Also, on the way to the Escher room one has to take a lift, there's a
secret behind that...
