87.0. "Sound Effects" by MOEUR2::SMITH (Fast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion!) Fri Aug 26 1994 09:41

    I propose this note to discuss the benefits, or otherwise, of sound and
    sound effects.

    Since I always play DOOM in an office environment (always after
    hours!), I play with the sound and effects volume at 0, i.e. OFF.

    Is the general opinion that the sound effects add to the playability
    and atmosphere of the game?

    You gotta have sound affects, you can hear monsters coming, doors
    opening etc etc.

    The breathing sound in Aliens doom is a very effective patch over the
    Imps 'gurgling' noise. It scares the willies out of me!

Most definitely!

If it's REALLY after hours, then crank it up on a boom box (or whatever)!
...and see how security reacts to the sound of shotguns :-)

    oohhh it was a world of difference for me.

    When I first started, I would just abort out of WfWg and start Doom.
    All I got was the music... which is actually pretty good.

    It wasn't until I installed a DOS boot menu to come up bare (without
    WfWg) that I discovered that I was missing the sound effects.

    While I can do without the sounds of my gun blasting, the sounds of the
    monster near by is most helpful to keep your eyes peeled. If something
    is actually hitting on you, you hear a ripping noise. (Imps on your
    back)

    Also, the only way you learn about some secret doors is to hear them
    move when you hit the trigger. They may not be in your line of sight
    and this is your hint to look around.

    In some levels, you can be aware of the monsters moving your
    direction by the unprevoked sound of a door opening, or the fizzle of
    a transporter.

    Yep, sound is a very important part of the game. I'd hate to be
    without it.

    Cheers, Laurie.
87.8Good advice given and greatfully accepted...MOEUR2::SMITHFast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion!Mon Sep 05 1994 03:5217

    Aha, aha, I found a good friend who has all the gear, official paid up
    version, sound card, PC wired into HiFi system etc. Way out man.

    Coming back to the non sound version just ain't the same.

    My favourite example of the sounds is in the military base on good old
    epsiode 1. There is a room with 5 pointed star, behind one of the
    walls (you can't get to it) is a room with loadsa baddies. As you
    enter the room (if not before) you can hear them breathing, the sound
    gets louder and louder until its almost deafening right next to there
    wall.

    I'll say no more since some of you may not have acheived this level
    yet!!!

    Apparently with a reasonable Sound card you can do a

    set dmxoptions=-opl3 -phase

    To get better Stereo music in Doom and Doom ][ using 1.666.

87.10Mono or Stereo?BLADE::ANDREI think, therefore I am, I thinkFri Oct 21 1994 14:077
   I have a standard 8-bit SoundBlaster card, and play DOOM (both I and II) with
headphones connected to the stereo output jack on the card. However, all sound
appears to be in mono. That is, when a door opens on my left, it doesn't come
from the left headphone speaker. Is this a problem/mis-configuration of my card
or is all sound in mono in DOOM?

> I have a standard 8-bit SoundBlaster card, and play DOOM (both I and II)

Kerreckt me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the basic 8-bit SB card is a
mono-only card, and you need a SB-Pro or better to get stereo.

    Yep, correct.

    I have one PC with an 8-bit mono card, and another with an SB16, which
    is stereo of course. There's quite a difference! Stereo's the way to
    go, definitely.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    This card is supported by Doom. What does it offer that is different?
    Do I remember that is has '3-d sound' or something? What does it sound

    re .14

    It's got mega bits of stored samples, its the 'next generation' of
    wave table synthesis.

    So instead of the PC working out what it thinks a drum should sound
    like, it uses a stored MIDI sample of a real drum.

    BTW for the money I got a Logitech Soundman Wave, which does a similiar
    thing for a lot less money!!
87.16FORTY2::HOWELLJust get to the point...Mon Oct 24 1994 09:4210
    So music-wise it's very good, an advance on Roland's wavetable
    synthesis?

    Otherwise is it just a simple 16-bit stereo sound card? Does it support
    data compression of some sort, etc? (Sorry maybe I should post this in
    501CLB::GAMES or something!)

    Any impressions?

    Weelll, that's what THEIR blurb says, but I wouldn't know.

    No idea bout datacompression.

    I believe it has been discussed in ibmpc-94

    ??? i just got a HiNote Ultra that had this stuff installed, so i gave
    it a go.

    Doom will not use the sound card at all, regardless of the hoops i jump
    thru. Heretic, however, works just fine, as does Wolfenstein and
    something called Blake Stone (whoever had this before me must have been
    into it). WfWg works okay as well.

    any suggestions as to what i might try? i poked thru CONFIG and
    AUTOEXEC but found nothing associated with a driver (other than a line
    in AUTOEXEC reading SET BLASTER mumble, which apparently sets IRQ,
    etc.).

    stumped,

    no conflicts as far as i can tell (MSD).  did notice that this is v1.2;
    dunno if that matters or not. one other weirdity: the SETUP.EXE that
    lives in the DOOM directory is the Heretic setup EXE. perhaps this is
    a bootleg copy of Doom?
