I'm confused... Do you run music under General MIDI or
under SB?
Does it work either way? Have you tried V1.6? (They
fixed sound bugs under 1.6)

| Well, 1.6 (installed last night) didn't fix it. I don't know that it's
necessarily a bug, maybe just my FX32 board, (which I thought was
common, although I now realise I'm paying Reveal's entire wages this
year...)
I know the game's putting out the right noises, because they do play
(dreadfully) through my PC speaker. Ahah! Diagnostic idea - I'll try it
with no music, just sound, see if that does anything.

| Well Logitech say this, which seems wrong to me:
Q1) Why do I hear a continuously played note when I play
Id's DOOM program with music set to General MIDI.
A1) Id has come out with an update to DOOM, version 1.3 which
will correct this problem. If you are a registered user of DOOM
you should be getting a copy, otherwise you can download the
update from their BBS.

| I also have the REVEAL SoundFX 32 card. It works the same way that .0
mentioned. I had gotten it to work very nicely with the older DOOM
shareware using the General MIDI for music, and the SoundBlaster emulation
for the effects. The IRQ's and addresses and DMA settings all work nicely
for windows, and other games. I got hooked on this DOOM game, and had
to run out and purchase DOOM ][ ($49.00 at Best Buy) to see the further
adventures.
But when I load DOOM ][, I get the theme music, which is powerful and
well orchestrated, but I don't hear any effects. If I go to the DOOM
MENU, and select the sound option, I can turn down the music enough to
hear some clicking and an echo. I don't hear any gunshots, or
breathing, or door openings, or gnashing of teeth that I so enjoy with
the original DOOM code.
I notice that my DOOM ][ engine is version 1.666. I see in the
patches that there is a PATCH called DM1666RP.ZIP. I assume that this
is a patch to bring OLDER registered versions up to version 1.666. Is
there some patch that I can load to make this version work as well as
my older version does with my sound card? Or have I forgotten
something in my installation? I followed all of the instructions...
Thanks for any insight.

Running the Logitech Install should update your autoexec for you.

I use a Microsoft mouse without any problems...
I did as you suggested, and commented out all "set blaster"... all
commands that the install process placed in my config.sys and
autoexec.bat files on my system disk. I copied over thoses commands
thinking I would need them on my DOOM/DOOM II boot disk. But I guess
from what you say all I really need is "D:\SOUNDMAN\SMWSET.SYS" in my
config.sys file.... I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

| Gary,
you need to know what Port, IRQ, and DMA the soundblaster is using,
then run setup in Doom and choose the music card and Sound FX card to
be SoundBlaster, and answer the questions correctly.
This is assuming that the Soundblaster install has gone fine, and
(not having ever owned a Soundblaster) that any test sounds can be
heard.
Cheers,
Greg

| Gary,
Well when you run the Soundblaster install it should preselect them for
you, or allow you to choose.
A second method is to type set at the DOS prompt and look for the line
starting BLASTER, then the parameters after that show what each is.
If you look in your Soundblaster manual it should be more help than me
as I've never owned a Soundblaster!!
I would forgot about Doom for step one, and just get the Sblaster
configured and running any tests correctly.
Cheers,
Greg

I guess if you have a real Soundblaster, AND you've set Doom up
correctly, then it will work.
Gary doesn't know what his IRQ, etc is therefore can't set up Doom.
Perhaps you could just take the defaults in Doom set up Gary, I assume
you have run Doom setup?

Since I last had sound from DOOM I had upgraded the motherboard from

Sound is fine with everything else including WOLF 3d, and ENCARTA.

almost inaudible but sound from SB is specified in DOOM setup and
volume contol is set to high!
Any ideas??

| I have tried the demo of CYCLEMANIA from the SUPERCD with january's
edition of PCPLUS and this works fine. However, as per my note about
DOOM under windows, DOOM works fine under windows unless I specify the
SB and then it hangs at the first screen.
If CYCLEMANIA really is a protected mode game (it looks like it from
the startup) then the basic hardware seems ok so I think it must be a
DMA or IRQ conflict as previously stated but I am having trouble
tracking it down.
I have an ET4000 clone VGA card, a multi i/o IDE card that drives hd &
FD, 2S & 1P, SB16MCD-ADSP & CD i/f so I am unsure how to resolve where
the conflict is.
Any more ideas folks?
