74.0. "Memory Requirements for DOOM." by MOEUR5::SMITH_M (Martin Smith, Evry (F). - 858 4896.) Fri Jul 22 1994 08:32

    Last night, when trying to relax the brain cells, I thought I'd in-
    stall DOOM for the first time. Well, I received an "Insufficient
    DPMI memory!" message from DOS.

    I have 613k of base memory available. How much *more* memory does
    DOOM require to run? [FWIW, I have looked in the FAQ 'document', but
    have been unable to find anything to help me.]

    Martin.

    P.S. On trying to run from Windows, I actually had the DOOM opening
         screen; but that was all - the system hung. :-( [I can provide
         more info if required.]

How much memory does your system have? If you've got at least
4 MB RAM, you shouldn't have any problems. Try removing EMM386,
QEMM, or any other Expanded Memory drivers from memory. Doom
uses it's own DOS extender to handle all that jazz.

74.2DPMI != Base Memory BELFST::HARRINGTONBuckyBall, The C-60 Fullerene.Fri Jul 22 1994 08:5310
        DPMI is DOS PROTECTED MODE INTERFACE memory, and has litle/nothing
    to do with your 613K base memory. Are you running QEMM V7, or other
    memory manager that services DPMI memory requests??

    	The best way to overcome problems with DOOM & Memory, is to boot
    without any memory managers, and let doom do it's own thing.

    .1 How much memory does your system have?

    Full details of system:

    4DX2/66 PCI with 8Mb, running DOS 6.2. I have three partitions
    (two of which are Stacked (with V4.0)). However, I have installed
    The Beast (V1.2) onto drive C: (the unstacked partition).

    I use a multiple config for startup, with an option for running
    DOS games. This only loads HIMEM, EMM386 and the MS Mouse (PS/2?)
    driver.

    I'll give it a try. Thanks to you both (so far!)

RE: FORMAT A:/S Syndrome

Not really... I use two machines (home and work), both of which
have EMM386 loaded and both are capable of running Doom (though
I don't play it at work -- no soundboard -- I know it works).

Are you using a lot of exclusion ranges? What is your (Q)EMM386
line?

Re: DOOM & DPMI

I had the same problem

486 DX33 8 Mb RAM
DOS 6.22
QEMM 6.02
Stacker 3.something
Hyperdisk disk cache (registered version) (loads from CONFIG.SYS)

The fix was to remove the SAMRTDRIVE line from my AUTOEXEC.BAT (DOS 6.22
Stepup Program added it, and I wasn't wise to it until later)

Two disk cache programs loaded simultaneously get some screwy errors!

BTW, DOOM was the only app that caught the dual-disk-cache thing!

Doom has it's own disk cache built in... ...so you were running three.

    About Memory:

    I used DEU to make a new level, but when I want to save my works, a
    message appears:
    Memory error: Cannot allocate Byte 0
    It's the first time that's happen...
    If someone can tell me why?

    Geoff,

    No. I have created a 3.5" system disk, that initialises the SB Pro,
    and installs the mouse driver (used by other *heavy* games) and all
    seems hunky-dory now, except for one slight thing - I can hear the
    music, but not the sound FX's.

    Set Rathole/Mode = On

    My Pro is set at DMA 10 (for some unknown reason). One of these days
    I shall get around to changing it to 5. Hopefully, that should cure
    the "problem".

    Set Rathole/Mode = Off

If memory serves me right, I heard from a tech support person at
some electronics / software house that the SB had to be on DMA 1
or it wouldn't work properly...

74.10Will it run in 4 meg ?GIDDAY::BROWNAt ALI: Outback AustraliaFri Oct 28 1994 14:018
    G'day,
    	   I tried recently to run the shareware version for the first time
    with a 4 meg 486-33 but get the insufficent memory error. To side step
    any config problems I booted with a 'vanilla' flavor floppy, ie nothing
    being loaded. Still would not run ? What should I look for (besides
    cash to buy more memory !)

    John.

Just do what I do (I've got the same spec), and hold left shift down (or f5)
when booting up.
74.13Hold F5 ?MAIL1::RHODESThu Nov 10 1994 15:566
    What does holding the F5 key when booting do? I was ready to delete
    the Doom Demo. Maybe there is hope yet.

74.14What f5 doesBAHTAT::HILTONBeer...now there's a temporary solutionThu Nov 10 1994 17:453
    If you have DOS 6 or higher, holding down F5 when you see the Starting
    MS-DOS prompt, will boot clean, ie will not run config.sys or
    autoexec.bat, with 4mb systems, this will mean Doom will run.
74.15Power or memory problem?CHEFS::MARCHRRUPERT MARCHFri May 10 1996 04:1012
    Seemed like a sensible place to put this note...

    My son like to play Doom on my PC - which is a 486/66 with 24MB RAM
    - which is a pain now and then. So I upgraded the kids PC which is a
    386/20MHZ with 2MB RAM, up to 4MB RAM.

    Doom runs, but it is sooooo slowwwww. Is it worth me putting more
    memory in? Or is the CPU not powerful enough?

    At the moment I think I've just wasted my money.

74.16PLAYER::BROWNLCyclops no more!Fri May 10 1996 07:446
    IMO, any 386 is too slow to run Doom adequately. 4meg of RAM is too
    little to run it without making special boot disks/menus. I think that
    a minimal system to run Doom sensibly is a 486 DX266 with VLB video,
    and at least 8meg of RAM. Note that I regard that as a minimal system.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    I think you're being a 'bit tough' Laurie.

    My 486-33 with 8mb at home is undistinguishable from the 486-66 with
    20mb at work.

    RE: .17 No problem. If you need proof, look at the performance fugures

    RE: .18

    That's because, and I mean this, and it's an informed opinion, that the
    DEC PC's are crap. The key to Doom is video speed, assuming 8MB RAM,
    and a half-decent processor. A 386 just don't cut it; end of story.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    PS. Yes TAZOs are being swapped; see EURO_SAD.
