69.0. "Doom 1.4 Available" by NPSS::TERPENING (Devon Terpening) Wed Jun 29 1994 18:04

Apparently a new Doom upgrade is out! On infant2 there's a file called
doom1_4.zip which is 2.3Mb in size. There's a text file with it which
reads as follows:

This is the shareware version of DOOM v1.4. If you find any bugs
in DOOM v1.4, please email id Software at [email protected].
This informal Internet bug testing period will cease on July 1st,
at which time we will upload a corrected version (v1.5) along
with all the patch files for the registered & shareware versions
	for updating v1.2 to v1.4.

    All,

    I've now posted this at SHUVVA::DKB0:[DOOM.MISC]DOOM1_4.ZIP;
By the looks of the readme it has the mouse problem sorted.

    Enjoy,
      -John.

Before everyone crashes SHUUVA:: in a blind rush to get the 1.4
program, read this carefully...

THIS FILE IS ONLY A TEST. That's right, a TEST. ID released a
copy, intentionally, to test a few bug fixes. It only works AT
THE MOMENT with shareware, not the registered versions. There
are several other bugs, but mostly because ID didn't bother
fine tuning sections they weren't interested in (ie. COM ports
get initialized at 14000, which isn't possible).

The actual release is pegged for around July 1, (don't hold
your breath), and if this is the case, expect a few notes
in this reply to shift and mysteriously vanish...

It seems a smart business person would do both, in regards to Carmacks
    response.

If I owned DOOM, I would hire a bunch of people to sit around with the
product and make new games, add small things, and come out with new
    episodes, etc.

While these people did this, I would write QUAKE. I would keep the
other group busy with the new product (in this case QUAKE) until I
came out with the next advancement.

They could sell a hellofva lot of variations on the existing product,
without allowing the WAD thing, and make a killing.

I can appreciate his dedication to developing the next level, yet I
would think hiring enough people to shoot off different games in the
meanwhile would keep people like me busy and spending money until it
    was ready...

    Maybe I am missing something?

Id are much smarter than this, by releasing all the details they did,
they allowed non-employees to write editors and develop WADS, FREE!!
Hence new levels are springing up all over the place while ID work on
    Quake.

    Smart move!

Yabutt, they don't make any money off of the new versions. You may
be right, every one will need a DOOM to run all those new games...

It is a different idea, to be sure.

(As a consumer, I am much happier with their solution!)

Can some one explain why Doom is not available in stores? I find it odd
that the best game ever created is not available in every sw shop on
the planet. The games you see in the stores don't even compare to
    doom. What gives?

It is available as packaged Shareware in many stores.

I think id doesn't want to sell registered versions via retail stores
due the cost, general hassels, and admin problems associated with
    distributers etc.

I think the FAQ has some more info. on this.

That's correct they marketed Doom directly. They have said that Quake will
probably be in the stores when they release it

Also, "DOOM II, Hell on Earth", due for release in October, will be sold
through the usual retail channels.

As a related side note:

If you come across a copy of Doom (not Doom II) in the stores (and
you live in North America) -- don't buy it, it's a pirated copy.

Apparently, id is having a lot of problems with pirated copies of
registered Doom...

Keep in mind, however (before you call the Software Police), that lots of
stores sell the *SHAREWARE* version, which is perfectly valid (so long as they
label it shareware).

How does one get hold of a registered version in the UK??

Is it only available by dealing direct with ID in the States?

    Jim,

I checked this out with ID. Ton's of places are selling full Doom in
the UK from 19 pounds, and I've also seen it on the shelves.

Just get any PC mag and check the adverts.

    Cheers,

69.15Original V1.4 update DOOM ??JGO::AMERSFOORTThu Jul 28 1994 08:5212
I have the original version of DOOM purchased in Holland by
HASA-software, Stadskanaal, but I didn't got the registrationcard.
So in this case I will not receive the free 1.4 update-version from
    ID-software.
Because there are some bugs in the 1.2 versiongame like the seriallink.
Is there anyone who can help me with the 1.4 update-version for DOOM.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mick.

There wont be an upgrade from 1.2 to 1.4 registered. We're all waiting
for the next patch and at the moment it looks like they will be releasing
    a beta of 1.6 followed by a patch to take 1.1 / 1.2 to 1.7

    John.
