60.1 | Good Idea... take it seriously | NZOMIS::MITCHELL | Glen Mitchell @NZO | Wed Jun 29 1994 09:28 | 9 |
| This issue has a serious side.... SGI are winning workstation business
in the mining sector in Australia because they have flight simulator
ported... and the word has spread around the mining/engineering
community who are influential in the decision making for these
things!... Apparantly this capability is the unofficial differentiator
in mining RFPs!!! If they have Doom and we don't, then clearly we are
Doomed!
Glen... (My 11 year old daughter is the Doom player in our family!)

| DOOM is supposedly being ported to Unix's (Linux is one).
Linux is being ported to AXP.

60.3 | Doom *is* on Alpha AXP | NOVA::MULLEN | Dan Mullen, Rdb newbie | Wed Jan 25 1995 18:19 | 12 |
| I had a hard time deciding if I should reply to note 65, 124, or 134...
At a Microsoft Windows NT Server developers conference last week the "MC"
demo'd WinDoom on an AXP machine. Rumor has it "someone" converted Id's
highly tuned assembly code into C and got an Alpha version hobbling along.
Looked darn fast to me.
Now who do we know at Microsoft that would get us some "demonstration"
versions....

60.4 | Sparc Doom is out | DAVE::MITTON | Windows in '95 | Thu Jan 26 1995 12:04 | 18 |
| well, this probably belongs in 134, but just to tweak the Alpha guys...
My brother called the other week left a msg. I called back, left a
msg. A week goes by, I call back again and catch him. He says great
timing! How do I get past these doors in level 3?
I ask him why he's calling me from California, asking me Doom
questions. And the answer is that they just got the Sun Sparc version
of Doom running, and it's taken over! See he's a Marketing mgr at
Sun, and has a home Sparc Station. He figures many many person hours are
being sunk there over the past few weeks.
...So I fire up my Pentium, warp on down to the same level as him,
IDDQD, IDKFA and help walk him through the level, and on....
He didn't even know the cheat codes. newbies born all the time...
Dave.

| It's not a question of the hardware though, is it?
I mean, Doom has been ported to Linux - so anything that'll run Linux
will run Doom. This is coming (or has it arrived) or Alpha AXP, and I
presume it's arrived on SparcStations too??
Doom will go on anything! It appeared on the crappy Sega 32X so
whatever next? A port to VT220 terminal emulation - Doom on VAX VMS!
hahaha

| >Domm on VAX VMS!
Lord, protect us! We lose enough man hours to these notes files, to
which I can personally attest!
It would be nice, though, for those of us without access to a
DECstation......

none of this answers .3 though....
obviously regular doom will not run on an alpha because it requires 386
emulation. however, there is a version of windoom in the works. beta
versions of this were released on the internet. its possible he has
one of these or an even newer windows beta that im not aware of. he
certainly doesnt have an out of the box ready to go version of doom
that runs on the alpha :')

oops, i got the borhter and MS demoer confused... the MS guy was
showing a beta of WinDoom that MS is working on. (if you search hard
enough on the internet, there are still a ton of copies of windoom
beta floating around...)
