OK,
I've killed every baddie in sight, found the map and explored every
damn inch of this level, but I still can't get out! The exit is by this
wall of tortured faces scolling behind bars, and at the end of the
room, it falls into a pit of red goo that's all hot and hurts and
stuff. The exit is a level above me but there are two teleporters that
take you back in the level a bit.
Please save my sorry carcass from the red goo!

hmm... (my hints book is at home and so is my copy of the FAQ)
I think you have to jump in, and run though the goo to an alcove to the
left of the exit door. There is the switch that raises the walkway
you need. Then step in the teleporter... it will take you back
somewhere, just work your way back. When you reach the exit door,
turn around and look back to the soul sphere.

Yes, it is. As you are about to walk into the teleporter to the left of
the pit, stop and look behind you...
....see it?!
