    I have a question. While playing this level I have stepped onto the
    area (green slime) that causes the floor to rise. (In the registered
    version, there is a button to raise the floor)

    If you cross over it, you will get to the area that holds the Blue Key.

    Anyways, I have tripped something that causes the floor to continue to
    rise above ground level, and presumably it just keeps going up.

    Has this ever happened to anyone?

    I can't make it happen very often, and I can't remember if it was the
    shareware version or the reg version that had this happen...

    Is this a mistake or could I have taken that for a ride some where?

    Regards,

    Did this happen with version 1.1 ? I recall the same thing happenning
    to me. I believe it was a bug, the switch has moved in version 1.2
    and I have not seen the floor continue to rise in this version.

26.4FORTY2::HOWELLWe're in the pipe... 5-5-5!Mon Aug 22 1994 11:4832
    Continuing the discussion of the secret military base, from this topic
    instead of E1M8 !!!.....................

    There are, I think, 2 secret areas you need to reach before you can
    gain access to the 3rd secret area which leads to the exit for the
    military base (E1M9).

    GENTLE SPOILER!....

    One of these secret areas is a bit of a rush to get to. I don't want to
    give it away unless you really want me to, so: you will pass over a
    certain point early on and hear some doors opening in the distance. A
    while later, you will hear the doors close. So, basically, you have
    this amount of time after stepping over the 'point' to run to the open
    door and get through. Once inside this secret area there is a switch
    which I think is necessary to get to E1M9 (unsure what it actually does
    though).

    The second secret area is much the same, but occurs towards the end of
    the level, on the east section from where you start. Again, you will
    pass a point and hear a door open. It will stay open for a certain
    period, then close. You'll have to find the secret doorway and get
    through before it closes. Again, there is an important switch somewhere
    in here (I think, it's been a while since I played this level).

    Now the entrance to the secret area from which you can reach E1M9
    should be obvious.... just look opposite the starting point for the
    level, over the pit of green ooze.

    Hope this helps, without spoiling it too much!

    The FAQ has the whole shooting match in full detail......
26.6i couldn't manage itDAVE::MITTONToken rings happenWed Aug 24 1994 18:588
    yeah... except I could never manage to run fast enough to get
    through those damn doors in time.

    I finally just turned on no-clipping mode and walked through.
    You have to remember to turn it off before you can really manage
    to take on the monsters. Bizarre, things happen otherwise.

    re .6, Dave

    It is possible using the SHIFT key to run as opposed to walk, and
    making sure you hit no walls on the way around!

    	Yes. It helps to use the map as well (this is all in the FAQ, but I
    don't blame dave for lacking the motivation to search through it to
    find E1M3 !!!) and clear the room of baddies/obstructions first.

    	I reckon you should be able to chainsaw down walls!

26.9not for lack of tryingDAVE::MITTONToken rings happenThu Aug 25 1994 17:579
    Hey, it's not like I didn't run at it more than 15 times before giving
    up. I struggled with the switch and platform in E1M4 for some time
    too. Not to mention the tricks to jumping between on the columns
    in E3M? to get the various things.

    Yes, I know how to run with Shift, but that didn't seem to be enough.
    I wonder if my 90M pentium throws some of the timing off.

26.10Processor Speed Compensation Algorithm (PSCA) ?FORTY2::HOWELLWe're in the pipe... 5-5-5!Fri Aug 26 1994 04:3811
    That's a possibility, yes. Does anyone know of any type of speed
    compensation on Doom? I would have thought it necessary for slow PC's.
    Or does Doom just *run slow* on them?!?

    Sorry if I sounded patronising! I s'pose the RUN option is rather
    obvious isn't it!

    Dan

    P.S. I find it handy to put RUN on the spacebar along with USE, so that
    the key does 2 things. You rarely need to run & use at the same time!

One other thing...

The linedef for that door is on the landing in
the middle of that hallway. Your best bet is to
go to the end of the hallway, run up and to the
left, NEVER release the shift key (note this may
take a bit of practice). If you can't do this, you
might want to check with ID to make sure it works.

26.12What shift key?MOEUR2::SMITHFast as a Mamba, Brave as a Lion!Fri Aug 26 1994 09:3911

    Incidentally, I've got into both the 'triggered' doors on this level,
    its not easy, but until today didn't know about the shift key!

    All I do is start at the bottom of the stairs with the pistol selected
    as weapon (don't know if this actually impacts anything) and keep
    moving. On the basis that I don't bump into any walls I'll get there.

    Of course I've already cleared the monsters, and 'know' the level.

26.13maybe I'll write IDDAVE::MITTONToken rings happenFri Aug 26 1994 18:3910
    You bet I hold that Shift Key down HARD. All the monsters are gone.
    It's just me and the room, and I never make it.

    I learned, if novices haven't by now, that there are places you cannot
    get with learning Shift==Run. Like jumping off some of the rising
    platforms on to ledges in several places in E1Lx. Until I learned
    that Run ==> Jump, I couldn't figure out what to do.

26.14Platform timing problem fixed in 1.666DAVE::MITTONToken rings happenThu Sep 08 1994 10:4513
    I'm happy to report that the V1.666 engine fixes this problem!

    I installed it last night, warped to this level, IDDQD, IDKFA, cleared
    out the baddies and barrels, and hit the platform on the first running
    attempt!

    I also warped to E3M7, Limbo, where I was having another problem with
    not being able to make it across the room in time for a rising platform
    and made that one on second attempt.

    There must have been a timing bug that got fixed.

    	Dave.
