Do you need a specific version, or minimum version, or set of versions
to add these files to? If I'm correct they provide an alternative
environment to walk around in, yes? Can you use them at the same time
as the networking/multiplayer Doom?
Thanks,
Ian

20.3 | WAD usage | BAHTAT::HILTON | Beer...now there's a temporary solution | Wed Jun 15 1994 12:05 | 8 |
| You need full registered Doom to use the WADS.
For multiplayer network you do:
ipxsetup -nodes # [-deathmatch] -file newname.wad
Where # = number of players
[-deathmatch] include for deathmatch, exclude for co-op play.

| RE: FTP's and Barney
Answers: It is possible to do an FTPMAIL to retrieve these files from
infant2.sphs.indiana.edu, one of which is the infamous BARNEY modifier.
Instructions can be found in the conference UPSAR::GATEWAYS, but here's
a quick and dirty way to try...
Send a message (email) to DECWRL::FTPMAIL, with the following as the
message (note this is only an example):
reply [email protected]
connect infant2.sphs.indiana.edi
chdir /pub/doom/newwads
binary
get barney.wad
quit
Barney.wad may or may not be there, I don't know, I 'm just using it as
an example. You need to make sure you specify your Internet address (not
your DEC internal one). The above set of commands will return the file
BARNEY.WAD to you as an encoded text file (possibly in more than one
part, depending on the size of the file). The format is called ATOB/BTOA,
and when we have a permanent Easynet location, I'll post the BTOA
program to get the binary file back.
You can also do directory listings, by issuing this message:
reply [email protected]
connect infant2.sphs.indiana.edi
chdir /pub/doom/newwads
ls
quit
The 'ls' is Unix for 'dir'.

how do I use WAD files?

|
20.9 | Try this. | IOSG::CHEWTER | | Mon Jun 20 1994 07:40 | 14 |
|
You add them in from the command line, the specific option is -file
e.g. to add in a single wad file from the same directory as Doom
doom -file example.wad
You can extend this to use more than one additional wad by just giving
more than one filename e.g.
doom -file example.wad example2.wad
For more info on this and other stuff check out the FAQ, there is a

Has anyone played SPACE.WAD? I ran through it quickly the other day, yet I
could not find any exit. The zip file I extracted it from (SPAC1.ZIP) contained
no documentation. Any spoilers?
The level has practically no monsters yet very good sound. The author has
also figured out how to create glass walls. You can see and shoot through
them, yet you cannot pass through them.

If I'm right about this, there is no exit because it's a DeathMatch

| Wow, I just got into these user-created WAD files recently, and I have
to say They're Great! They're better than I expected.
I have taken the wad files out of my SYS$DOOM directory and put them
into a directory of their own. You can get them now from METALX::SYS$WAD:
The Infamous Aliens one is in there as ALIENS-X.ZIP
Some of the others which I like are The_keep (a castle with moat)
Starwar2 (star wars)
Subway21 (A subway system)
Galaxia (this has new sound effects)
Widowmkr
In my quest to try and design one of these myself I copied some editors
and node-builders from an FTP site. Anyone who is interested can copy
them from METALX::DISK3:[PUBLIC.DOOM.WAD-EDIT]. There's 3
subdirectorys off of that containing editors, node-builders, and text
files explaining the finer points of wad-building. :')
Don't ask me how to do it because I haven't figured it out myself yet.
But when I do I intend on making a doom level of The Mill. Or at least
some of the buildings in it. Then when we move to Parker street, and
the Mill closes, it will be immortalized in a .WAD file!

| Article 53521 of alt.games.doom:
My series of Pwad mini-reviews was interrupted by
release of elements.zip. Here is the next installment
in a continuing series of (mostly-)serious Pwad
reviews...
------------DOOM PWAD Mini-review: CHEESE.ZIP -------------------
Name: Cheese (a.k.a. Satan's Hell Hole)
Type: New single mission, single player or deathmatch
Mission: E1M1
Overall Rating: very good
Mission Scenario: standard, explore interesting area and
terminate anything that moves.
Mission Map Size(s): large
Difficulty (in HMP): medium
Visual Quality: excellent
Construction Quality: very good
Game-play Quality: good
Author(s): Matthew Hooper
Notes:
This Pwad is an very nice visual showcase for some
good graphics work, and large well-connected sets of rooms
for deathmatch. The use of animated textures is quite good.
There is a cool fast-food stand, and a nice big picture of
satan, a nice sky taken from the E2 intro screen, and other
good stuff. It was a good evening's entertainment playing
Cheese.wad.
The author uses a lot of unconventional textures for
doors, which is slightly confusing at first. They do give
the mission as distinct personality, though. So does the
music, which is some kind of country-techno piece by The
Meat Puppets.
In playing through this Wad in HMP and UV, I saw no
obvious graphics bugs or HOM. There was a narrow area where
I encountered the "trapped between the walls" bug, but that
is hardly the author's fault. The first time I played this
Pwad, using Doom 1.666, it was terribly slow on my 486/33.
Applying a good reject-map builder (RMB) and playing it with
1.2 brought the performance up to acceptable levels. Given
how slow this was on a 486, it may not be suitable for 386 PCs.
When playing CHEESE all the way through twice, I was able to
get 100% secrets and >95% items and kills both times,
because the gameplay is not really very difficult. In
single-player mode, this mission proceeds quite linearly,
due to triggered doors and key-access doors (all three keys
are used).
Availability of health, ammo, and armor is okay. I never
ran out of ammo, anyway. Really expert players might consider
there to be excess ammo in Cheese. Placement of bonuses
and ammo is mostly quite good.
Now for the whining...
If I had one thing to fix about this Pwad, it would be the
deathtraps. There are quite a few deadly pits and moats
that are easy to fall into and impossible to get out of.
When you play this, it is a good idea to be on the look-out
for these traps, and move carefully around them. Nobody
minds taking a health hit for falling into or exploring a
pit full of nukage, but having no way out at all is somewhat
annoying. Also, some of the secret areas could have been
better hidden, but maybe that was intentional.
Overall, this Pwad offers game-play suitable for even
moderate players, with excellent visuals and good music.
I was not able to try it for a Deathmatch game, but it looks
like it might be good for that, if perhaps a bit too spread
out. CHEESE will make a worthy addition to anybody's Pwad
library.

| Well, this was interesting....
Last night I loaded into Doom a level I was modifying, which a mate and
myself use for Deathmatch levels. I just wanted to test it out for any
nasty bugs (HOM etc....) and forgot to put a player 1 start in it (ie.
it only had 4 deathmatch starts).
Apart from not starting, it locked up the computer completely so a
re-boot was in order.
On re-booting, my CMOS hard disc settings were blank! I'd lost my piece
of paper with them written on, but luckily AUTO DETECT fixed it.
So a word of warning to any editors out there, make sure you do at
least one of these :-
o Write down your hard disc parameters for CMOS
o Make sure a level always has a Player1 start!
Have fun....!
P.S. DoomEd is an excellent level editor.

| I've seen in Virgin Megastore a CD for use with DOOM, basically a load
of new wads/editors/etc. You know, the usual stuff. Charged some daft
price for it as well. I think it's totally disgusting that whoever
compiled this CD can make money out of other peoples work (like all the
wonderful stuff you can find on FLYTE::) who spent ages making levels
for no money at all.
However this magazine disc sounds better (ie. no extra charge for 500
wads!!) and the convertor sounds good too (for those who have only got
Doom 2).
I'll have to keep an eye out for it as it WOULD save a lot of disc
space! Can anyone tell me if this would be possible if you got this
magazine CD ?
C:\DOOM > doom -file d:\wads\level.wad
ie. run doom from hard disc but specify the wad on the CD?
Apart from maybe speed penalties, I can't see why not. Any views?

RE: CD-Rom drives...
Yeah, several companies are coming out with quad speed drives,
Plextor and NEC are just a couple more...
A full Plextor internal will run you $400-$500...
A NEC will run you about double that...
As to the CD, all of that stuff can be downloaded, it's just
a compilation of all the shareware stuff for DOOM.
Is it worth the money? I don't know it depends on what
you want... Just because it says it has 500 new levels
don't expect them all to work or to be even good...
I wish Id or someone would offer the registered versions of
DOOM and several registered editors on CD-Rom... Now,
that's something I'd pay for... And while their at it
they could throw DOMM II on there plus some levels. :^)
Adios,
Mike.

20.60 | WAD converter for DOOMII? | FOUNDR::OUIMETTE | Don't just do something, sit there! | Fri Nov 11 1994 11:16 | 19 |
| Hello all, DOOM novice in need of help...
I've searched & searched, but can't find a definitive answer. Could
some kind soul please post instructions for utilizing WADs with DOOMII?
I've just gotten addicted (found the DOOM shareware here, took it home,
stayed up all night playing, bought the DOOMII CD the next day :^). I
understand that the WADs must be converted somehow to use with
DOOMII, and I've seen pointers on the Internet to different utilities
which will convert this, or that, or the textures, or something else,
but I'm afraid I'm mightily confused.
Basically, which files do I need to use to convert the WADs I've
found here? Are these conversion programs available on FLYTE or some
other easynet node? I want to play the Cheese WAD!
All pointers gratefully received,
chuck

| I'm afraid you might be a little disappointed here. Although you can get
utilities to convert the Doom WADs to Doom ][, all they do is change the episode/
level format to comply with the Doom ][ format - that is all the converted that
I have discovered did. The problem is that some of the wall textures don't exist
in Doom ][, so when you run Doom ][ with the converted wad, it fails with a
failure to recognise some textures !!
I don't know if anybody else has had a better experience with these conversion
tools, but I would have thought that this should be taken into account and
alternative textures substituted.

So what's this conversion program for? Do I need it? Are textures a
non-issue? And what about Aliens-TC, same story? I guess I need a WAD
primer, if anyone can point me to one; I've read the DOOM FAQ (58), but
it's for DOOM (1). In any case, I'll try the above command tonight...

After having purchased PC ZONE with all those doom levels on it, I discovered

Great eh ?

Nope, "doom2 -file cheese.wad" didn't do the trick. Complained
about "must buy the registered version" or some such. And this is the
doom2 I bought on CD at Lechemere's. so I know it's Kosher.
So, if anyone is successfully playing WADs with the DOOM2 engine,
explicit steps to playability would be greatly appreciated. I just
gotta find out if there's Venezuelan Beaver cheese in this WAD ("oops-
the cat's eaten it..)!

| My understanding is that Doom ][ requires Doom ][ wads, and the same
goes for Doom I. I have not heard of Doom 1 wads working on Doom ][,
or vice versa.
That said, there are some Doom ][ wads starting to hit the ether
now. I've played Doom ][ Sin_City, which is very good. Also have a
complete 9-level episode for Doom ][. These have just appeared on AoL
in the last week. Many Doom ][ wads are deathmatch inspired for some
reason, I don't play on the net so don't have much use for those.

| re: Greg.
Hi, What do you want to do with those graphics?
1)If you want to insert them in your own .wad you can use DEU521:
Run DEU and load the .wad where the replacement graphics are with the
"R" command: if the .wad name is "WOW" (why not?) then: r wow.wad
then save the graphics:
S <direntry> file.wad
where S=save, <direntry>=the graphic name, file.wad= the output_file.
Quit, then re run DEU and load your own level.wad, then load the file.wad.
Group all in level2.wad with the command: g level2.wad
Your own .wad is now updated with the new graphic in level2.wad.
2) If you want the graphics in .gif format for other use than DOOM,
then you can use DMGRAPH...I can't remember the commands but it's
really easy to do.
I hope this helps you, contact me for more informations or look at
flyte::user1:<archive.doom.text>.

| I think it should be, yes (although expect a few minor niggles I
imagine).
The main WAD file in Doom2 is called DOOM2.WAD instead of DOOM.WAD.
Hence why dmgraph can't find it. Make a copy, or rename it, to DOOM.WAD
and (although I haven't tried it) I imagine that'll solve your problem.
(Probably introduce a new one, though :-] )

Hi all,
Well, I just stumbled upon a great deathmatch wad called
woodisde.wad for DOOM2.
This wad is very well thought out. It has multiple levels, I'm
not sure how many, and requires some co-operation to reach
the later levels.
It has a good supply of weapons and misc items. And the levels
are fairly well designed, gives players enough room to play
around in.
Check it out,

interesting WADs I've been hearing about.
One of the first I tried was DMSILLY but it doesn't seem to work. Since this
particular "WAD" modifies your "real" WAD I didn't think I needed to do
anything special on the command line (like you do with PWADS).
Doom starts OK but I get the original sounds. Yet DMAUD tells me that the
silly sounds are in DOOM1.WAD. It looks like DOOM.WAD is overriding
DOOM1.WAD. Am I missing something?

| Ok Dan,
Here's another one for you, or anyone else if Dan fancies a rest. I got
the crazy notion that I'd like to create 9 PWADs using DEU and stick
them all together in one IWAD. However, last night gave me severe
misgivings when trying out the first three levels over a modem link
caused both PCs to hang.
We can play straight DOOM (reg'd version 1.666) without a hitch.
All three levels that I have created have a player1 start thing and 4
deathmatch starts.
We each started the game using the following command line then talked
through identical setup settings for difficulty, episode, deathmatch
etc before hanging up and connecting modems:
> SETUP -FILE NICK21.WAD NICK22.WAD NICK23.WAD
This stringing together of WADs seems to work fine when I'm checking
the levels out in single player mode, and the fact that NICK23.wad
doesn't have an exit didn't bother it either. Is modem play a bit more
fussy or should I be looking for corruption of one of the WADs on his
PC?
Any suggestions will be gratefully recieved.
Cheers,
Nick.

RE:-.1
Well, from a purely problem solving point of view, you could try
to contain them all into one .WAD file and see if you get the
same problems.
Get your friend new copies of your original .WADs and also a
simple batch file to run them.
Also, check to see if your systems are compatible, I tried running
head to head on a 386/16 against a 486/33 and DOOM would
lock up.
You could upload them to the doom directory here and have people
beta test them for you... I know Rob has a network running
on his three PCs and I have access to two PCs with a
serial connection.
It could be the line connection, sometimes noise generated by
outside influences will corrupt data.
I haven't worked yet with DEU, my system is way to slow, so I
I don't have any practical advice around your designs. But,
there are tons of factors that coulb be effecting your modem
connection.
Does this help?
Bye,
Mike.

20.89 | Okay here's my two penneth! | FORTY2::HOWELL | Just get to the point... | Mon Jan 30 1995 04:22 | 39 |
| Hmmm okay, here's some thoughts :-) .......!
>>All three levels that I have created have a player1 start thing and 4
>>deathmatch starts.
That's fine for a single player game, and fine for up to 4-player
deathmatch, but if you were trying to play 2 or more co-op, it won't
work - you'll need a Player 2 Start Thing, Player 3 Start Thing, and so
on...
I don't use DEU (everyone seems to rave on about it, but to be honest
after DoomEd I can't see why....) but, if it's anything like other
editors, you can edit all 9 levels and save them to a single PWAD.
However you mention :-
>>stick them all together in one IWAD.
An IWAD is the internal DOOM WAD and it's probably not a good idea to
do what you suggest. Considering it's over 10 meg big.... there's no
point in making another IWAD, or did you simply have your terms mixed
up? Whatever.... all I can suggest is reading up on DEU's instructions,
or examining the ? help page.
re.Hanging, this could be modem related, yes. Try a slower line speed.
Some machines not equipped with 16550 UARTs (is that the right
number?!) have problems talking to other machines that do. It's not a
satisfactory solution, but slowing them down is the only way. This was
supposed to be addressed in v1.666 I think, so maybe you have another
problem?
The suggestion by .-1 of putting these WADs up on here is a good one.
Remember we have a little section for Conference User's creations, and
I'd like to see the stuff up on FLYTE. We have a 4-node network at home
and I'd be happy to try it out for you. If you're interested, drop me a

If you're into deathmatch check out FRAGFEST this is a nine level PWAD
that someone pulled together from various existing wads. It includes a
couple from the LEDGES series and the famous TOURNEY.WAD that is used
for tournaments (dunno why, it's the naffest level on there IMO).
In a ranking of 1 to 10 I would give this one an overall 9 for
deathmatch play.

Has anyone tried the above ZIP file. I downloaded to my machine at home

the latest phunzip.
When I try to unzip it on OpenVMS I get:

file #1: bad zipfile offset (can't find local header sig)
I have the commercial version of DOOM ][ and I assume I need the above
in order to use most of the WAD files on FLYTE. For instance, I downloaded
the CHEESE.ZIP file and it unzipped just fine. When I tried the command
DOOM2 -file cheese.wad
the doom engine complains that the cheese.wad file has been modified and

BASLG1 is 41.397 (42381::).
Cheers,

| Hmmm, I've got you as
$ node baslg1
Node: BASLG1 DECnet address 44.1005 (46061)
Location: GMT Basingstoke, England - UK Comms/Office Demo Centre
I've corrected this on BANDI, but I don't know how to do it on GIDDAY - I
haven't got my OSI drivers license yet :-( Strange, really because the
GIDDAY cluster is usually correct.

| Just checked on a few other nodes around here that usually have correct
node info and they look ok. Don't know where you got your stuff fro,.
The Location is correct (sort of) - the demo centre is downstairs.

| Re: .113
Use $MC DECNET_REGISTER (assuming you have DECnet/OSI V6.1 or better).
Use option 1 to show what it should be:
Directory Service: DECdns
Node name: DEC:.gmt.baslg1
Accessed by link: .DNA_NodeSynonym.BASLG1
Node address: 49::00-29:AA-00-04-00-8D-A5:20 (41.397)
Number of nodes reported on: 1
Use option 2 to play with it (if you have the appropriate rights within DECdns).
If you use a local namespace you can do what you like with it.

| Just a quick note; we played network DM with BOOTHILL last night.
Brilliant! Poor old H'anus... I won't spoil it by saying what's what,
but the difference and parallels between levels 2 and 3 are great! What
a cracker of an idea.

| Yeah, it is. We played 4 levels, which I think is all there is. I was
unable to find any exits, so we had to explicitly load each level. We
had some problems until we realised that in DM we had to specify
whether it was a New Deathmatch or an Old Deathmatch. Other than that,
it was good!
Cheers, Laurie.

| It was a great laugth. The most interesting thing about this wad is
that levelS 2 and 3 are identical except that level 2 is daytime and
level 3 is nighttime - and boy do I mean night time - you can really
lurk in the shadows and scare the willies of your opponent.
Its also good to see that Loz's and Chris's doom abilities have
improved.....though there's still a long way to go ;^)

| I think monsters are essential in Deathmatch. I'm playing in the
British Doom League (the bloke that writes the DOOM column in PCZONE is
playing in the league so if you see a mention of 'Kruger', that's me!
The WAD for the league is called BRITISH3 and is excellent for
deathmatch; it's like a small town in the middle of an arena with a
ledge around the arena which leads to teleports and doors which lead in
turn to sections with decent weapons. The very best of the weapons are
in sections where you have to battle past a monster or two first. There
are only a few creatures but it makes getting the really big weapons
that much harder.

| Ok, dragged this from the ROTT FAQ:
Secrets in the Game
(from the Apogee FAQ)
If you start ROTT when your system clock indicates that it's one of
five
different holidays, the "group picture" of the five main characters is
changed slightly. In addition, on Christmas, the music for the first
level is changed to a familiar Christmas tune. The holidays and
effects
are as follows:
Easter <varies> Lorelei Ni wears Easter Bunny ears.
Cinco de Mayo 05/05 Ian wears a sombrero.
Independence Day 07/04 Doug holds an American flag.
Halloween 10/31 Thi wears a witch's hat.
Christmas 12/24 Taradino wears a Santa Claus hat; new
music
12/25 for the first level.
