             Only play 1.2 shareware version, many friends at local
             companies play network matches after work. One of these
             nights if I can get a kitchen pass maybe I will get to
             try the Deathmatch !!

             So far, my favorite is the exploding toxic barrel ploy
             when being attacked by several enemies. Grosses my
             daughter out though !!!          

    I figured that since this was a notesfile for DOOM only, each level
    could afford its own topic.  
    
    If this is a bad idea, moderators feel free to delete those puppies!

    I enjoy winding down at the end of a day (from time to time) by

    sometimes with 3 and sometimes with 4.
    
    My ambition is to own a PC of my own, and thus be able to *BUY* DOOM. 
    For now I only have access to the version that doesn't need paying

Bought DOOM (shareware) as soon as it hit the streets, went wild on it for a 
while. It got kinda back-burnered due to other issues. Just started to get 
back into it when I found the DOOM thread and this conf. Now I'm back and 
interested in tring a WAD file or two.

Since we're showing or stuff in this conf.

DEClp466DX2 1MB VRAM, 32MB RAM
PAS-16 connected to an amp and small speakers and/or headphones
(The sound via this combo. will make you fill your drawers.)

Also play on a 425SE Colour (STN) - works really well except for the sound.

Playing on getting a joystick (Gravis) to improve my aim - keyboard is too 
quick and mouse too awkward.

    straight out! Great graphics and realism was totally freaky! Then I
    discoverd sound with the Fusion 16 kit! Oh MY....(sizzle)

OK, I admit it.  I'm hooked on Doom.  I feel guilty that, as a 40-something
parent of 4 impressionable kids, I'm not setting a good example for them.  Hell,
I have to fight with them to get in some Doom time.

Can't affort a home LAN yet to get a good 4 way Deathmatch.  Is it cheating when
you tell the kids that they can't have the car on Friday night for fragging
their dear old dad?  Is that why they let me win?

There, I feel better.  Back to mayhem.

I'm impressed with the addon .WADs being created out there in cyberspace.  There
are some clever things being done with graphics, sound, and layouts.  Check
out INVADE1.WAD, YAKWORLD.WAD, or UAC_DEAD.WAD (I think I've been in that hotel)

    I got Doom for my nephew and he loves it.
    
    I can't play it though as it makes me physically ill.  Nauseus, dizzy,
    and killer headaches are what I get if I look at the game.  Anyone else
    get sick from this game?
    
    I'll be checking in from time to time as my nephew asks me still more

    This is a common problem, I know many people who suffer from it. They
    all have 66's, loadsaram and fast graphics cards, so it run really
    smooth. I think the nausea is linked to this.
    
    Knock the turbo button and playit dead slow instead!

anyway,,, for the intro..

Ray Pelkey, work in MRO3-3,, spent many-many nights in the
endless corridors and court-yards of doom 1.1, and doom 1.666,,,,,
Recently became a mild wad-aholic, grabbed the DOOM archives, and
was happy zipping through them until someone gave me the DOOM ][
beta,,,,  woa,,,,  here we go again!!!!  Doom ][ is gonna blow
you guys away (for those who haven't seen/played it yet..)


I've spent a FAIR amount of time learning how to move efficiently,
dodge fireballs, strafe,,, and basically that is the most important
part of the game in my opinion...  I even re-programmed my movment keys,,

found tha w-forwad x-back, a-left s-right is perfect for right handed
mousers....  (using shift, alft, and the new direction keys, along
with the mouse makes you a pretty hard target to take down....


I really like co-op play, and have a few people who I can go in
with... I LUV death match,,,,

Jonathan here - just discovered this conference...

I'm a DOOM addict :
I have a 486SX-33, 4meg RAM, 270Meg HD, SB Pro compatible, Joystick....

I can't get enough of doom, I've collected hundreds of extra WADS and created
about 4 WADS myself, a couple of which I've loaded onto a great BBS for DOOM
WADS - The Gates Of The Underworld.

I use DoomEd in WINDOWS. It took me about 2 weeks to learn the ins and outs of
the tool, but after trying to get to grips wth DEU and hearing other peoples
problems with stitching etc (It does it all for you), I've found it relatively
easy to use.

I'm also seething with jealousy that our friends in the states are already
receiving DOOM ][. My copy has been on order from the day I was sent a flyer a
couple of months ago. Hopefully it will turn up on or soone after Doomsday (3
days and counting).

By the way, does anyone know whether existing editors/node builders will work
ok with DOOM ][ ?

        I had Wolfenstien 3D, and was impressed.. but wasn't really into
    it.
        When I first started Doom, I actually got queasy watching the demo.
        I had to shrink the screen-size to keep from getting motion
    sickness, (and I don't usually get motion-sickness) :')
        Anyway's I'll be getting the registered version soon.
        Hey how about putting all these wad/utility files on a CD?

    Sticking a compilation onto CD would need quite a lot of organisation
    to do, since you'd need to ask the permission of a whole load of
    people, without breaking any copyright laws. Still, maybe one day....

    Just found this conference.  
    
    I run a 486dx266 16mb RAM, 1Gig HD, SBPRO II, Love DOOM II.  Never really 
    got into DOOM, but DOOM II is astounding.  I played it constantly for
    hours on end when I first got hold of it, and am on around level 20 -
    30 ( I lose track after a while).  
    
    I know that DOOM wads are being sold on CD-ROM, about 6 UK pounds or
    something, and several PC magazines have had DOOM wads on them.
    

    
    Another very recent discoverer of this conference.
    
    No, I don't play DOOM, but my 11 year old son does on his machine
    under WfW. I might install it on the Linux partition of my system.
    (Kids' machine is a 25 MHz 486SX with 340 MB IDE and 4MB RAM. Mine's
    a DEC PC 450ST with an RZ35 and 20MB RAM but a slow Paradise card).
    
    Heard about DOOM from the Linux USENET conferences and wondered what
    all the excitement was about. We bought a shareware CD at a show, and
    found DOOM on it. Now it appears to be time to send in the registration
    and start learning how to design WAD's, when I find the time.
    
    Might just be the escape from testing DECsafe and other products
    all day long :-).
    
    

    
    Bayard, ID was more than willing to do the port to OSF/1 if were
    willing to lend them a machine! It had been all arranged and something
    happened to the deal and it fell apart... I got it all started but
    someone else was working on it and probably got TFSO'd...

    It was bound to happen sooner or later, and here it is, my
    introduction.
    
    I am running a dx2 66, 16 RAM, 528 HD, D Stealth 64 2Mb DRAM,
    Soundblaster Pro 16, Duel Speed Panasonic CD-ROM, and some other stuff.
    
    DOOM was good, DOOM2 is even better, and I love the little fat rocket
    launcher type blokeys!  And deathmatch is what the world was created
    for!!!!!

    My motherboard supports both PCI and VESA, and the graphics card is PCI
    (which can be a disappointment to look at, because it's so small!!)
    
    Also, I've got a 15" monitor, the screen on which goes right to the
    very corners, making DOOM just that bit bigger!!!!!

    Just realised I haven't done an intro .... shock horror! So in an
    attempt to quiten things down in here before Ed and Mark start a severe
    fraggin' between the two of them....

existed. Seven days later, finally got it going (not mention

I too prefer to use the keyboard for exploration, and the

    	Had no problem installing Aliens. The only problem we had to
    overcome was getting a way to put Aliens-TC.ZIP on floppy! We ended up
    running SoftPC on my VS4000 and backing up Aliens-TC.ZIP. Twas easy....
    
    I use this notes conference one in a while to read about others'
    adventures with Doom. It's addicting as hell!

But Doom maxes out at 35fps ... so that's what you get -- same as me! :-)

    It's great.  CDINFO (a german program) says it's giving me 680K/sec
    transfer rate.  Return to Zork's cd benchmark progam says it's 580K
    though, so I don't know which to believe.
    
    I haven't had any problems with it.  It has jumpers for disabling the
    eject button, and forcing it to single-speed.  I have the "single
    speed" jumper hooked up the the keyboard switch so I can compare the
    speed difference!
    
    Don't know what else to say about it..... it's got 1 Meg of buffer
    onboard, but you probably already knew that if you were looking into
    it.

I have the registered DOOM, and DOOM II (bought a CD, but installed the whole
thing for better performance). I usually play at UltraViolence, and don't use the
cheat keys (its tempting sometimes).

I haven't played via modem, but Deathmatch sounds like it would be fun.

    Been reading this note for a while, since finding DOOM the shareware
    version on the net.  After a nice DOOMed weekend I had to get the reg'd
    version.
    
    Play on a 386/33 with no sound.  I thought it was great till I played
    on my fathers Pentium 60 with SB16.  What an amazing difference. 
    Called Gateway 2k, Micron and other mail orders for their catalogs, but
    will probably be stuck with the 386... it still does the job.
    
    I am still on DOOM, shores of hell, but the old man has DOOM II and I
    was playing it a bit this weekend.
    
    Best stuff in DOOM...
    Exploding a rocket or barrel next to a creature and watching him
    vaporize.  Same with the super-punch in berserk mode.  Chainsaw is cool
    to... its my fathers favorite.
    
    Now back to read-only mode.

    Howdy Folks.  Looks like I'm not the only one addicted to Doom.  I had
    to buy a PC compatible to do my master's thesis project, but I find now
    that I can't turn the thing off without playing Doom for at least a 1/2
    hour. ;-)

    		540 Mb HD (from Digital, much to my surprise)
    		17" Mag DX17F Monitor
    
    I had to sacrifice 8 Mb of memory and the multimedia goodies to get
    the bigger monitor and still keep the price reasonable.  After working
    on this nice 19" monitor all day, 14" would have been a painful
    transition.  It looks like I better find out what my Doom frame rate is
    so that I can find my place in the food chain here... ;-)

Get an AMD DX2/80 ... mucho-better!  Bus speed goes up to 40MHz, and the chip
speed goes to 80MHz!  Some folks have reported these systems are faster than
DX4/100's (tripled 33's) due to the higher bus speed.  The price difference is
not all that much.

Besides, those AMD DX2/80's are keeping us Digital Semiconductor folks
employed ... AND making Digital money!!!!

    Been a fly on the wall of this conference for a while so I guess I

    I like to turn up the sound turn out the lights and `feel' the noise
    
    Use the keyboard for left-right and speed control and mouse for the
    rest. With this config' I can do a smooth 360 around my target while
    facing it (and plugging it with lead, plasma, whatever) all the time.
    
    Almost finished DOOM ][ on UV but got side tracked by Aliens-TC
    
    Come to think of it I was well into Privateer until I got side tracked
    by DOOM ][.
    
    Currently trying to work out the right modem settings to get a Death
    Match going with a friend (at the moment it only works if he rings me).
    I'd like to start a new Modem topic where people can share their modem
    settings, configs, problems etc. but being new to noting could do with
    some advice on `WRITE' protocol.
    
    I cut my teeth on Wolfenstein by the way and I still get nauseous if I
    watch over someones shoulder. It's simple motion sickness. Having a
    chair with wheels helps so you can move about a bit. What's wrong with
    trying to see round the corners, my wife has a fit when I fly back from
    the desk - mouse flailing uselessly in mid-air.

After having read this conference and the doom topic in GAMES for over a year 
and made a few contributions, I thought I should make an entry here.

deathmatch but I haven't got any friends (sob, sob) or a modem. If anyone in
Ayr (Scotland) wants to offer to play deathmatch give me a call!!!!!!!!!

    Been running Doom ][ only so can't get any of these other wads to work
    unless I buy V1.5 (might do actually).
    
    Running on a 90Mhz Pentium with a 4megVram Stealth 64 PCI card. System
    ram is only 16meg. Game runs real smooth though, but is slowed down when
    playing deathmatch to my old 486-33 isa based machine. I hope to get
    them networked together soon so that might improve performance.
    
    Anyone know if a wad is being or has been done of Deathpark ? I'm
    planning to do one of the Solent office but need to get my V1.5 game
    registered first unless there an editor for V2. Looks to be a bit of a
    learning curve to the wad editors too.

Dan Flowers, signing in.  I've been read-only... primarily since you're all
beyond my level.  I'm up to level 9 on Doom ][ in HMP mode.

486/66.  Just got a sound card and speakers!  Wow, what a difference!
I finished the Shareware version and 6 levels of D][ with no sound (not even
the PC speaker, since I play late at night when everyone else has gone to
bed :-)

I usually try to play for 100% everything before moving to a new level, but
I've been too anxious to play new levels to stick to that lately.

For those of you playing at home, do you deathmatch over phone lines?  I
guess I gotta find someone local...

    just discovered Doom, and subsequently, this notes conference. Great
    game, and lots of good stuff in here.
    
    I recently inherited a PC from work (and old DEC(Tandy) 386/33, with
    8MB memory and a 175MB HD. Doom V.099 was already loaded, and I would
    occasionally play with it, but now that I've added a PAS 16bit sound 
    card, I play more often. Especially since discovering this file and
    learning about (& loading) the shareware v1.666....:^)
    
    Now, back to read-only mode, until I learn more about the game.

	Just recently picked up the Ultimate Doom CD.


	No kids, so its just me and my 486-50, 8MB, PAS-16 sound card.

	
	Lotsa fun.  Sometimes, after a frustrating day, I go in, turn
	on god-mode, UV setting, give myself a beserk and just punch
	away, and away, and away.  Love that sound it makes when you	
	clock someone and they just disintegrate.   (Sorry, guess
	I got carried away there....)


	Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out how the use the
	cheat codes in Nightmare mode.  I know someone in here had
	it, but they're not with this fine company any more....8^)

    Saw this in the shops at the weekend at about 30 quid. Read the
    blah-blah and decided against buying it. It has effectively only
    another 9 new levels so whats the point - i've got a whole CD full of
    levels that the sharewares created so why pay 30 quid for IDs nine.

I wasn't a registered user though.

I had been planning on calling the 1-800 number to register and get the "real"
game.  I hadn't gotten around to it.  When I was in the store, I saw the CD and
decided it was only $44 (if I remember right -- it might have been $39) which
was just a tad more than what registration would cost me....

That's why I picked it up....  If I had been a registered user, it wouldn't
have made economic sense to buy it.

$39?  At COMP-USA in Atlanta, it's for sale for $24.95.  By the way, I got the
upgrade from id's ftp server and upgraded my copy over the weekend.  Episode
4 is quite a bit harder than the first three episodes.  There are Barons of Hell
all over the place!

We've got a COMPUSA but it's an hour's drive.  It's down in Orange, CT, which
is past New Haven.  I'm up in the Hartford area.

Supposedly they're putting one in in the Hartford area by the fall, but I
haven't heard where.

I've been the one in Orange once, and their sales help was very condescending
and rude, and I'm not into being dealt with like that when I'm there to spend
money 8^)

I guess I paid the extra money for the convenience of buying it with 10 minutes
of home.  With the price of gas here in CT, I'd have eaten up that much money
driving to Orange 8^)

    External speakers for a sony walkman (really cheap!, sound is better
       than PC speaker)

    14 inch monitor (painful)
    
    512K paradise video card. ISA (sorta painful, better than some I
       tested)
    
    SCSI and IDE disks
    
    Runs Doom pretty well (saving grace of entire system)
